Book The Yellow Poppy

Download or read book The Yellow Poppy written by Dorothy Kathleen Broster and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in France after the Great Terror which followed the French Revolution, this is the story of the Duc de Trelan and his last ditch attempt to defy Napoleon's forces and lead a rebellion of aristocrats and peasants from North West France. The novel also centres on his wife, whom he presumes met her death during the Terror while he was in England. Both the duc and the duchesse are strong minded and principled characters but have not as yet come to appreciate each other's courage in the face of danger and their faithfulness to the ideals of their class. The duc, in disguise and under a cloud of infamy for having, supposedly, abandoned his wife, returns to France to lead an uprising against Napoleon. Meanwhile his wife, who has escaped the guillotine, is also living under a false name, ironically as the regime's concierge of their own chateau. How the two find each other again, then lose each other forever through their conviction that personal happiness must be sacrificed to honour and how the uprising fails forms the plot of this fast paced novel.

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Yellow Crocus returns with a haunting and tender story of three women returning to the plantation they once called home. Oberlin, Ohio, 1868. Lisbeth Johnson was born into privilege in the antebellum South. Jordan Freedman was born a slave to Mattie, Lisbeth's beloved nurse. The women have an unlikely bond deeper than friendship. Three years after the Civil War, Lisbeth and Mattie are tending their homes and families while Jordan, an aspiring suffragette, teaches at an integrated school. When Lisbeth discovers that her father is dying, she's summoned back to the Virginia plantation where she grew up. There she must face the Confederate family she betrayed by marrying an abolitionist. Jordan and Mattie return to Fair Oaks, too, to save the family they left behind, who still toil in oppression. For Lisbeth, it's a time for reconciliation. For Jordan and Mattie, it's time for liberation. As the Johnsons and Freedmans confront the injustice that binds them, as well as the bitterness and violence that seethes at its heart, the women must find the courage to free their families--and themselves--from the past.

Book excerpt: Few weeds have been more successful throughout history than the poppy. Hated by farmers for its stubbornness, the poppy has been a favorite of artists and poets, due to its distinct and brilliant color, and it has functioned symbolically as everything from a war memorial to an emblem of the exotic cultures of the East. In this book, Andrew Lack explores all the aspects of one of our most familiar flowers, combining biology, history, and culture to paint a bright portrait of this fascinating plant. Lack looks deep into the past of the poppy’s ancient history—before it seemed to inhabit only ditches and cornfields—and examines the biology that gives it its unique coloring. He analyzes the poppy’s many members of this beautiful family, including the opium poppy, which is the source of one of the world’s oldest—and most ravaging—narcotics. He describes how the poppy came to be associated with war and remembrance, and he looks at how they have been used to commemorate everything from weddings to funerals. Beautifully illustrated, the book will appeal to gardeners or anyone fascinated by the way plants have so powerfully figured in human culture and traditions.

Book A Gardener s Guide to Frost

Download or read book A Gardener s Guide to Frost written by Philip Harnden and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He visits thousands of gardeners each year. Some of them see him coming, others are caught by surprise. Far too many never recover. His name is Jack Frost -- and he's coming soon to a garden near you. A Gardener's Guide to Frost is packed with practical advice that every gardener can put to use each summer. Readers will learn to look at their gardens the way Jack Frost does so they can keep their gardens thriving despite his icy visits. The clear, easy-to-understand explanations come from someone with dirt under his fingernails, and the book includes helpful tables and other resources, including a handy chart listing the frost tolerance of common garden vegetables. Readers will also meet some gardeners who have devised ways to keep on gardening right past fall frosts and into winter. For all its practical advice, however, this book doesn't present Jack Frost as some sort of villain who spoils our all-too-short gardening seasons. Rather, it explains how we can learn to garden with frost -- even embracing it as a friend who helps us slow down and appreciate the beautiful and fleeting gifts of gardening. Book jacket.
