Some of the other ancient poets may be allowed to equal him in beauty or sublimity, but in moral dignity he undoubtedly soars above them all: and there can be no doubt that it is the prevalence of virtuous and noble sentiments, even more than purity of style or splendour of imagination, that ought to form the chief recommendation of a book in tended for the instruction or delight of the youthful mind. It was to facilitate the study, and thereby to ex tend the knowledge of this noble Poet, that the present Edition was undertaken. If, by means of the improved text with which the scholar is now furnished, the former purpose shall in any degree be effected, the Editor can not doubt that the latter will at no distant period follow as a natural result.
