Book The Works of Jonathan Edwards D D Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Works of Jonathan Edwards D D Vol 1 of 2 written by Tryon Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Jonathan Edwards, D. D, Vol. 1 of 2: Late President of Union College; With a Memoir of His Life and Character Most of the works of Dr. Edwards included in these volumes have before been published separately; and some of them, several times. But all of them have long since been out of print, so that a copy could rarely be found. At the suggestion and earnest request of many of the ablest living theologians of our country, an attempt has now been made to collect in a uniform edition all the most valuable of his writings heretofore published, with the addition of quite a number that are now for the first time edited from his manuscripts. The works which Dr. Edwards himself published in his life time, have long since placed him in the highest rank of profound reasoners and able theologians; and it is believed that those now for the first time given to the public, will not diminish, but rather add to his reputation. It may be noticed by some that the volumes are not punctuated with entire uniformity. The explanation of this is, that in reprinting from those already published, the punctuation of the former editions was mainly followed; so that the work, in this respect, is not as uniform as though it were now published entire for the first time. It should also be mentioned, that the editor residing at a distance from the place of publication, has not been able to superintend the press. This department of the work, however, has been faithfully attended to by the publishers, so that the references, etc. are probably given as accurately as they could have been under the eye of any editor whatever. THE PARTING COMMENDATION* Acts 20: 32.--And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. In this chapter is an account of part of Paul's journey from Philippi to Jerusalem. Ephesus was in proconsular Asia. It was a place where the apostle had labored much, and where at one time he had spent two years, (ch. 19: 8--11.) He was the founder of the church there; the spiritual father of its members. He had built them up and made them what they were. And now as he is going to Jerusalem, not knowing what was to befal him there; as he could not visit Ephesus, he sends from Miletus, a sea-port near, for the elders of the Ephesian church to come and meet him. On their arrival he addresses them in a very affectionate and solemn manner in the farewell discourse of which our text is a part. He tells them in much tenderness that they shall see his face no more; and then after advice on various points he leaves them with God in the language of our text. " And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified." In dwelling on these words, I would show 1. What it is to commend to God, and to the word of his grace; 2. What is presupposed in this; 3. In what sense his word is able to build us up, and to give us an inheritance among them that are sanctified. I. What is it to commend to God, and to the word of his grace 1 1. What is it to commend to God 1 It is, * A farewell discourse to the church and society in New Haven, May 24, 1795. The body of this sermon, as far as the "Improvement," was left by the author...

Book The Thought of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book The Thought of Jonathan Edwards written by Miklos Veto and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards is the greatest theologian of colonial America as well as its first important philosopher. As a theologian, he represents without any concession Calvinistic Orthodoxy, re-thought and re-lived through the experience of the Great Awakening. The large majority of his writings are of a theological character, yet this theology is articulated and expressed through a systematic philosophical reflection. Edwardsian thought covers three major areas: First, being, grace, and glory; then, the doctrine of the will extending to the study of the original sin and evil; finally, an entirely original theory of knowledge synthesizing spirituality, aesthetics, and epistemology. The present book, the first edition of which appeared in French almost thirty years ago, is a uniquely comprehensive study of the work of Jonathan Edwards. It discusses all the aspects of his thought over against the background of classical Protestant theology and of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Western philosophy. Our time witnesses a significant renewal of interest in Jonathan Edwards. Professor Veto's book should prove to be a major contribution to assist and to guide the readers of "America's Theologian."

Book excerpt: This is a study on Reformed theological debates during the »Long Eighteenth Century« in Britain and New England. By »Long« a period that goes beyond 1700–1799 is in view. This examination begins just before the eighteenth century by looking at the Neonomian-Antinomian debate in the 1690s. This is followed by the Marrow Controversy in Scotland in the eighteenth century. After that, the authors address the ecclesiological debates between George Whitefield and the Erskines. The doctrine of free choice concerning Edwards and his departure from classical Reformed orthodoxy is highlighted next, followed by reflections on the Edwardseans and the atonement. Returning to Britain again, the volume provides a study on hyper-Calvinism, and on eschatological differences among key figures in the eighteenth century. More specific debates in particular Baptist circles are noted, including the battle over Sandemandianism and the Trinitarian battles fought by Andrew Fuller and others. Returning to ecclesiology, a discussion on the subscription controversy in Philadelphia in the early eighteenth century and an analysis of the debate about the nature of »revival« in New England close this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards’ (1703–58) ideas are among the most significant to the development of Reformed Theology in America. However brief the life of his intellection tradition, Edwards’ ideas and their reception remain an integral part of contemporary theological dialogue. Hitherto no work has appeared that sheds as much systematic light on the reception of Edwards’ ideas than Maltby Gelston’s (1766–1865) Systematic Collection of Questions and Answers in Divinity. As a ministerial aspirant under the tutelage of Jonathan Edwards the younger, Gelston received catechetical instruction through an exhaustive series of 313 questions, tailor made by early New England theologians. To this point, researches have mused over the significance of these questions and what they tell us about the development of the New England theological tradition. With the publication of this manuscript, researchers may now, for the first time, muse over the significance of Gelston’s answers.
