Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Honore De Balzac: The Thirteen, Father Goriot, and Other Stories La Duchesse dc Langeais is, I think, a better story, with more romantic attraction, free from the Objections just made to Ferragus, and furnished with a powerful, if slightly theatrical catastrophe. It is as good as anything that its author has done Of the kind, subject to those general con siderations of probability and otherwise which have been already hinted at. For those who are not troubled by any such critical re ections, both, no doubt, will be highly satis factory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac Balzac's short stories, which we call in French nouvelles, are, generally speaking, not the best-known or the most popular part of his work; nor are they the part best fitted to give a true and complete idea of his genius. But some of them are none the less masterpieces in their kind; they have characteristics and a significance not always possessed by their author's long novels, such as Eugenie Grandet or Cousin Pons; and finally, for this very reason, they hold in the unfinished structure of The Human Comedy a place which it will be interesting to try to determine. That is all that will be attempted in this Introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Honor De Balzac: Volumes XXV-XXVI It will he observed that Balzac's critical instinct made him perceive that 14 Duchesse dc Langeais was by far the most important of his three connected stories. On this point most laden are in agreement. Yet each story has distinct merits, and together they make a volume that appeals greatly to per who care for sensational romance. It is the fashion to sneer at the interest attaching to this kind of fiction, but it is well for a novelist to have a Histoire des Treize among his works, on which jaded readers can fall back. And from which new readers can receive an impetus to attack other and more serious hooks. Besides. It must he remembered that Balzac, after his youthful period of extravagant writing was over, never failed to introduce an element of realism into his sensa tional hooks that lifted them far above the genre. Of fiction to which they primarilv belonged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac IF it be true of Moliere that he was not only the greatest of comic authors, but comedy itself, it may be said of Balzac that he was not only the greatest, the most fertile and diverse of our novelists, but the novel itself; and the object of the present volume is to show that in saying this I say nothing but the ah solute and exact truth. For this reason the reader is requested not to seek in the follow ing pages a biography of Honore de Balzac, or what to-day goes by that name - infor mation about his origin, anecdotes of his college days, the tittle-tattle of his love-affairs, and the tedious narrative of his quarrels with newspapers or publishers - but solely a study of his work: a study in which, of course, I do not refrain from speaking, when necessary, of the man and of the romance of his life, but Wherein I wish especially to define, to ex plain, and to characterise his work - which, in my opinion, would remain the same if Balzac, instead of being born in Tours, had been born, for instance, in Castelnaudary, and if, in place of studying law, he had studied medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Novels of Honor De Balzac: Now for the First Time Completely Translated Into English Fear is a half morbid feeling which presses so violently on the human organism that its faculties are at once either excited to the highest degree of their power or plunged into the lowest depths of dis organization. Physiologists have long wondered at this phenomenon, which overthrows its systems and upsets its conjectures; yet it is merely an upheaval working from within, but, like all electrical acci dents, whimsical and freakish in its ways. Such will be the popular explanation as soon as the learned recognize what a great part electricity plays in human thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac, Vol. 2 Le Pere Goriot perhaps deserves to be ranked as that one of Balzac's novels which has united the greatest number of suffrages, and which exhibits his peculiar merits, not indeed without any of Ins faults, but with the merits in eminent, and the faults not in glaring, degree. It was written (the preface is dated 1834) at the time when his genius was at its very height, when it had completely burst the strange shell which had so long enveloped and cramped it, when the scheme of the Comedie Humaine was not quite finally settled (it never was that), but elaborated to a very considerable extent, when the author had already acquired most of the knowledge of the actual world which he possessed, and when his physical powers were as yet unimpaired by his enormous labor and his reckless disregard of "burning the candle at both ends." Although it exhibits, like nearly all his work, the complication of interest and scheme which was almost a necessity to him, that complication is kept within reasonable bounds, and managed with wonderful address. The history of Goriot and his daughters, the fortunes of Eugene de Rastignac, and the mysterious personality and operations of Vautrin, not only all receive due and unperplexed development, but work upon each other with that correspondence and interdependence which form the rarest gift of the novelist, and which, when present, too commonly have attached to them the curse of over-minuteness and complexity. No piece of Balzac's Dutch painting is worked out with such marvelous minuteness as the Pension Vauquer, and hardly any book of his has more lifelike studies of character. It would, however, not be difficult to find books with an almost, if not quite, equal accumulation of attractions, which have somehow failed to make the mark that has been made by Le Pere Goriot. And the practiced critic of novels knows perfectly well why this is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Dramatic Works of Honore De Balzac Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dramatic Works of Honore De Balzac Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Honoré de Balzac and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of Honore De Balzac, Vol. 2 According to the respective dates of their production, the drama and the comedy included in this volume are the last ones that came from the pen of the indefatigable novelist. In fact, Balzac never witnessed the "first night" of Mercadet, which was presented at the Theatre du Gymnase Dramatique, on August 24, 1851, i. e., just one year and six days after the death of the great Frenchman. The reader will agree with the professional critics in recognizing, in both these plays, qualities that are lacking, to a certain degree, in the three dramatic efforts contained in Volume I. The action is more compact, the dialogue quicker and livelier, and the climaxes a great deal more satisfactory than in Quinola's Resources, for example. It seems as if the master had realized, to some extent, his deficiencies as a playwright and had forced himself, with his usual energy, to obey more closely the stem requirements of the stage. In our time of "theatre populaire" and "theatre naturaliste" he would have met with a very different welcome. The influence of Scribe and his imitators, all-powerful in those days, has so completely vanished from French literary circles that it seems to have never existed. How many superior qualities are there not required for the making of such a man! Do you find, in any country, many of these diplomats of the ground floor, of these con summate negotiators speaking in the name of calicoes, of jewelry, of the cloth-trade, of wines, and frequently more skilful than the ambassadors, who, for the most part, have only empty forms? No one, in France, entertains any doubt concerning the incredible ability incessantly displayed by the travel ling drummers, these intrepid affronters of negations, who, in the farthermost borough, represent the genius of civilization and the Parisian inventions grappling with the good sense, the ignorance or the routine of the provinces. Can we ever forget here those admirable manoeuvres which knead the intelligence of the populations, by treating by word of mouth the most refractory masses, and which resemble those indefatigable polishers whose files lick into smoothness the hardest porphyries! If you would wish to know the power of the tongue and the con vincing pressure brought to bear by phrases upon the most rebellious ecus, those of the small landed proprietor buried in his country mud, listen to the discourse of one of these grand dignitaries of the Parisian industry for the profit of which trot about, strike and function these intelligent pistons of the steam-engine called Speculation.
