  • Pages : 576 pages

Download or read book The White Cell written by Martin J. Cline and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only comprehensive and critical account, in a single volume, of the leukocytes. It cuts across scientific and clinical disciplines to provide a unified review of granulocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes, both as individual cell types and as they form an integrated system of defense against the body's foreign invaders. Sections on each cell type discuss first normal and then abnormal aspects of morphogenesis and morphology, the kinetics of production, distribution, life span, metabolism and function. Specific disease states are reviewed in the context of pathophysiological mechanisms. Readable, and beautifully illustrated with photomicrographs, electron micrographs, diagrams and drawings, this book will serve a broad audience of physicians and scientists as well as students seeking a basic grounding in the field. More than 6,000 references are cited; the reader will find a perspective on the historical development of leukocyte biology as well as a current summary of a rapidly changing field. Not only hematologists, but workers in the basic disciplines of immunology and cell biology, and in the clinical fields of oncology, genetics, infectious disease, surgery, and related areas, will turn to this book as the fundamental teaching and reference work on white cells.

Book Inflammation and the Microcirculation

Download or read book Inflammation and the Microcirculation written by D. Neil Granger and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microcirculation is highly responsive to, and a vital participant in, the inflammatory response. All segments of the microvasculature (arterioles, capillaries, and venules) exhibit characteristic phenotypic changes during inflammation that appear to be directed toward enhancing the delivery of inflammatory cells to the injured/infected tissue, isolating the region from healthy tissue and the systemic circulation, and setting the stage for tissue repair and regeneration. The best characterized responses of the microcirculation to inflammation include impaired vasomotor function, reduced capillary perfusion, adhesion of leukocytes and platelets, activation of the coagulation cascade, and enhanced thrombosis, increased vascular permeability, and an increase in the rate of proliferation of blood and lymphatic vessels. A variety of cells that normally circulate in blood (leukocytes, platelets) or reside within the vessel wall (endothelial cells, pericytes) or in the perivascular space (mast cells, macrophages) are activated in response to inflammation. The activation products and chemical mediators released from these cells act through different well-characterized signaling pathways to induce the phenotypic changes in microvessel function that accompany inflammation. Drugs that target a specific microvascular response to inflammation, such as leukocyte-endothelial cell adhesion or angiogenesis, have shown promise in both the preclinical and clinical studies of inflammatory disease. Future research efforts in this area will likely identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention in inflammation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Historical Perspectives / Anatomical Considerations / Impaired Vasomotor Responses / Capillary Perfusion / Angiogenesis / Leukocyte-Endothelial Cell Adhesion / Platelet-Vessel Wall Interactions / Coagulation and Thrombosis / Endothelial Barrier Dysfunction / Epilogue / References

Book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health

Download or read book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health written by Kitty Verhoeckx and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.

  • ISBN : 9812790403
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book White Blood written by Mel Greaves and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are countless academic books on the subject of childhood leukemia. The idea behind this book, however, is very different. Here, we look at the extraordinary story of childhood leukemia from very distinct and unique perspectives: a distinguished physician who has lived through the transition of the disease from despair to success (and who played a key role in the latter); a distinguished laboratory scientist who has helped breach the barrenness of biological ignorance of the disease to reveal its nature; a patient who has been confronted with the tough realities of the illness and has been cured; and parents who have been given the worst possible news ? that their child is diagnosed with leukemia ? and who have endured the prolonged treatment, hope, and despair or relief that follows. These individuals recount their personal experiences, challenges, and ?interactions? with the disease in ways that complement and contrast with each other. Thus, not only does the book contain extraordinary stories involving the very best of biomedical research and clinical advances, but it also embodies very human tales of resilience, optimism and courage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity has become the most common chronic disease of the present day, with significant increases in prevalence in populations across the world and all age groups. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in obesity-related metabolic and cardiovascular complications, making it an important public health issue. Type 2 diabetes associated with obesity or 'diabesity' is today the most common form of type 2 diabetes. It is also associated with a number of other cardiovascular risk factors, which constitute the metabolic syndrome. Effective management of 'diabesity' is crucial to the reduction of morbidity and premature mortality due to cardiovascular disease. This book comprises chapters written by leading international experts on various aspects of obesity-related diabetes. As a practical reference guide, it is suitable for all professionals with an interest in this field. Emerging problems such as childhood 'diabesity' and the impact of obesity on polycystic ovary syndrome will be of interest not only to paediatricians and endocrinologists, but also to general practitioners and other healthcare professionals. The contemporary approach to the clinical assessment of obesity and its management in both primary and secondary care settings is also described.

Download or read book Handbook of Lithium Therapy written by F.N. Johnson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a medical student in the 1930s, I remember well that a very clear line of distinction was drawn between physical illness and mental illness. Physical illness resulted from pathology which could be identified and studied in detail and the cause could often be deduced. Treatment thus was often specific and based upon a proper appreciation of underlying basic science. Mental illness, on the other hand, could not, it was believed, be based upon identifiable changes in basic science. It was literally 'all in the mind' and, occurring in the absence of causes that could be identified, analysed and remedied, had no treatment that could in any way be called specific. N ow it is all too easy, in Medicine, for a doctor to become so immersed in a specialty that he fails to notice how his colleagues in other specialties are faring and, through laziness, to miss advances even of fundamental importance in fields other than those in which he himself works. As a consultant surgeon, after W orId War II, although I realized the importance of keeping in touch with those medical specialties which appeared to have a common interface with my own surgical interests, such as general medi cine, gastro-enterology, hepatology and endocrinology, it did not occur to me that there was any pressing need to ask what was new in Psychological Medicine.

Book Cell Boundaries

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen H White
  • Publisher : Garland Science
  • Release : 2021-12-31
  • ISBN : 1000508536
  • Pages : 565 pages

Download or read book Cell Boundaries written by Stephen H White and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central themes of Cell Boundaries concern the structural and organizational principles underlying cell membranes, and how these principles enable function. By building a biological and biophysical foundation for understanding the organization of lipids in bilayers and the folding, assembly, stability, and function of membrane proteins, the book aims to broaden the knowledge of bioscience students to include the basic physics and physical chemistry that inform us about membranes. In doing so, it is hoped that physics students will find familiar territory that will lead them to an interest in biology. Our progress toward understanding membranes and membrane proteins depends strongly upon the concerted use of both biology and physics. It is important for students to know not only what we know, but how we have come to know it, so Cell Boundaries endeavours to bring out the history behind the central discoveries, especially in the early chapters, where the foundation is laid for later chapters. Science is far more interesting if, as students, we can appreciate and share in the adventures—and misadventures—of discovering new scientific knowledge. Cell Boundaries was written with advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the biological and physical sciences in mind, though this textbook will likely have appeal to researchers and other academics as well. Highlights the history of important central discoveries Early chapters lay the foundation for later chapters to build on, so knowledge is amassed High-quality line diagrams illustrate key concepts and illuminate molecular mechanisms Box features and spreads expand on topics in main text, including histories of discoveries, special techniques, and applications
