This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Wanderings and Summer Saunterings Through, Picturesque Colorado One day, last September, while making a three-days' trip over the picturesque Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, from Denver to Grand Junction, I casually mentioned to a fellow-traveler that I had been writing letters, descriptive of my western trip, to an eastern newspaper. He made the semi-sarcastic rejoinder, "Then I suppose you are going to write a book," and quoted the oft-heard expression "Oh! that mine enemy would write a book." I said, "No, I had no thought nor intention of ever inflicting such a burden upon my adversary or my friend;" and at that time I had not. After "Western Wanderings" of four months, I returned to my home in the East, and found that my letters had met with popular favor. This volume is a compilation of those letters, and is printed only at the earnest solicitation of over-kind friends, who assured me the letters received much commendation, and that their compilation in book-form would be very acceptable. They have been graciously read, corrected, and verified by responsible officers of the United States Geological Survey. The facts may seem astounding to many people, but they are the concrete realities making true the general statement of America's greatest interpreter from abroad, James Bryce: The West is the most American part of America; that is to say, the part where those features which distinguish America from Europe come out in the strongest relief. What Europe is to Asia, what England is to the rest of Europe, what America is to England, that the Western States are to the Atlantic States, the heat and pressure and hurry of life always growing as we follow the path of the sun. In a very general way the system forms two parallel ranges running north and south, joined by subsidiary east and west connections; between these are the great mountain parks, open Wide valleys rather bare of trees, and situated at elevations of to feet. The chief of these are North and South Parks, drained by the North and South Platte rivers, which meet out in the plains of Nebraska and join the Missouri near Omaha Middle Park, drained by the Grand River, the principal af uent of the Colorado River of the west, draining into the Gulf of California; and the San Luis Valley, draining into the Rio Grande on the south. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Colorado and the Santa Fe Trail It would have been proper to say more about the burning Indian question but a suitable disquisition thereon would have not only outrun the limits of the book, but cast a sombre tinge over it. It is a wonder that people who profess to regulate their individual lives on the principle of there being a certain and inexorable retribution for wickedness, will not comprehend that they share the responsibility of their country for its shameful, infamous wrong-doing in this regard. Much can be said in j ustification of the residents of the West in their hatred of the Indian, and the evil lies far back of them. The United States are clearly convicted of the acts of cruelty, perfidy, and dishonour which have had their logical sequence in the smoke and flame of burning houses, and the shrieks of murdered women and children, which have gone up, year after year, on the frontier. Individuals who are guilty of such crimes are warned to expect a judgment on them. If ever an aggregation of individuals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Homestead Lands of Colorado Described: A Handbook for Settlers The value of farm lands in Colorado is far below what it should be. This is easily accounted for from the fact that the available farm lands exceed the supply of farmers in the State five to one. People are waking up to this fact, too. They are finding out that ten acres in Colorado can be purchased for the price of one acre in Illinois, Iowa and the Eastern States. They are also finding that there is not so much difference between what can be produced on an acre of Colorado land and on an acre in the Mississippi valley. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History, Greeley and the Union Colony of Colorado The present time appeared to me a favorable One for this work as many of the old landmarks are disappearing, and the data I found were beginning to be difficult to procure. The files of The Tribune were incomplete, nearly the whole of the first year being missing, while The Sun has no files previous to 1885. The deficiency above pointed out, is made good to a certain extent by the care of H. T. West who has collected in a Scrap Book a large number of news paper articles relating to the colony during the first three years. Mr. West has been kind enough to put this in my hands together with other valuable documents, some of which will be printed in full in the appendix. Book On the East west Slope

Download or read book On the East west Slope written by Attila Melegh and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melegh's work offers a powerful analysis of the sociological and symbolic meanings of East-West in Europe after the end of the Cold War. While the fundamental poles of East and West remain, both their meaning and their relationship to one another have shifted profoundly since the late 1970s. Melegh exposes the underbelly of liberal characterizations of East-West, highlighting the polarizing effect of extreme nationalism and ethnic racism. The theoretical underpinnings of this work involve the ideas of preeminent theorists such as Karl Mannheim, Michel Foucault and more recently Maria Todorova and Iver Neumann. This work casts into fine relief how the "East-West Slope" oriented negatively from West to East has emerged from liberal characterizations of this project. The book analyzes the historical change in East-West discourses from a modernizationist type to a new/old civilizational one. In addition, this is one of the first attempts to link post-colonial analysis to developments in Eastern Europe.
