Book Marlborough s War Machine 1702 1211

Download or read book Marlborough s War Machine 1702 1211 written by James Falkner and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blenheim, Ramilles , Oudenarde, Malplaquet _ much has been written about the brilliant victories of the Duke of Marlborough's Anglo-Dutch army over the armies of Louis XIV of France during the War of the Spanish Succession. Less attention has been focused on the men and the military organization that made these achievements possible - the soldiers, the commanders, the army structure and administration, the logistics, engineering, weapons and finance. That is why James Falkner's penetrating account of the composition and operation of Marlborough's army is of such value. His clear analysis gives a fascinating insight into Marlborough's war machine and into the conduct of war in Europe 300 years ago.

Download or read book Malplaquet 1709 written by Simon MacDowall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1709, after eight years of war, France was on her knees. There was not enough money left in the treasury to pay, equip or feed the army and a bad harvest led to starvation throughout the kingdom. Circumstances had worsened to the point that King Louis XIV was forced to offer to end the War of Spanish Succession on humiliating terms for his country. However, the allied powers – Britain, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire – refused Louis' offer, believing that one more successful campaign would utterly destroy French power. This book examines the campaign of 1709, culminating in the battle of Malplaquet, which would prove Louis' enemies disastrously wrong. Led by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy, the allied armies achieved a tactical victory – but it was a hollow one. The allies suffered 23,000 casualties to the French 11,000 in what was the bloodiest battle of the 18th century. The scale of casualties shocked Europe and led to a reversal of fortunes, with the dismissal of Marlborough and a newly confident King Louis resolving to fight on. When the war finally ended, it did so on terms favourable to France. In this illustrated title, Simon MacDowall examines the campaign in full and shows how, though it is generally accepted that Marlborough was never defeated, the Battle of Malplaquet was ultimately a French strategic victory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wars of Marlborough, Vol. 1: 1702-1709 MY brother, Frank Taylor, set to work in 1905 to write the Life of Marlborough, which he had all but finished in 1913, when he died at the age of forty. I have prepared the manuscript for publication and supplied the references, bibliography, and general index. The chapters dealing with Marlborough's earlier career, and the sketch of the last campaign, are printed as appendices, and I have added a short account of my brother's life. I am much indebted to the Hon. J. W. Fortescue, who has kindly written the Introduction and marked the positions of the troops on Mr. Cribb's plans of the several battles; to Professor Spenser Wilkinson for his advice and un wearying help; to Mr. Ernest Barker, Principal of King's College, London, for his assistance in the arrangement of the chapters; as well as to Professor Firth, Dr. Warde Fowler, Mr. G. N. Clark, and Mr. A. I. Ellis of the British Museum. My admiration for Mr. Cribb's maps is equalled only by my appreciation of the skilful and patient help he has been ready to give me with the text in every geographical difficulty. To him I am indebted also for the index of places. And, finally, I should like to express my gratitude to those friends, and especially those members of my family, who have in any way aided me towards the publication of my brother's book. Book The War of the Spanish Succession 1701 1714

Download or read book The War of the Spanish Succession 1701 1714 written by James Falkner and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the death of a childless monarch sparked a bloody conflict that raged across Europe and beyond. The War of the Spanish Succession, fought between 1701 and 1714 to decide who should inherit the Spanish throne, was a conflict on an unprecedented scale, stretching across most of western Europe, the high seas, and the Americas. Yet this major subject is not well known and little understood. James Falkner's absorbing new study fills that gap. In a clear and perceptive narrative, he describes and analyzes the complex political maneuvers and a series of military campaigns, which also involved the threat posed by Ottoman Turks in the east and Sweden and Russia in the north. Fighting took place not just in Europe but in the Americas and Canada, and on the high seas. All European powers, large and small, were involved—France, Spain, Great Britain, Holland, Austria and Portugal were the major players. The end result of over a decade of outright war was a French prince firmly established on the throne in Madrid and a division of the old Spanish empire. More notably though, French power, previously so dominant, was curbed for almost ninety years.
