Excerpt: ...Dear to her soul as favourite brother. The guilty one, whose tender hand Oft led her by the shining strand, And gathered shells and flowerets fair, To wreath amid her fiaxen hair. " How little did I dream," thought she, " When last he sang the song for me, That told me of the prison's blight, Wasting away the captive knight, That he should have his own heart wrung, Like him of whom he sadly sung. " Oh! sister, sister; happy one; That knows not of the wrong thou'st done; And here my knee is bended low, That thou may'st never, never know. Oh! still unconscious of our stain, May thy distorted mind remain, Until the voice of Death draws near, To whisper in thy wakening ear, ' Come, leave behind thy stain and clay, And soar to everlasting Day.' " Why should we weep when those we love To pure and early tombs decay, Before the world's corruptions move The heart, or Passion's power can sway? " Why weep to see the infant lie Gold on its anguished mother's breast; Or to behold the maiden die, Ere love corrupteth her young breast? "Ah! no; we should not mourn the young, Whom Death hath laid beneath the sod; 'Twas but the bud with us that sprung, The flower immortal blooms with God. " A brighter world before them lies; And higher anthems greet their ear Than earth could picture to their eyes, Or music shed around them here." So ran her thoughts, until she heard One solitary, welcome word; It was her name, by Eman spoke, That gladly on her ear had broke, As softly in his riding-dress, He crossed that room of wretchedness. He spoke, and sad his accents fell, " Bertha, I come to say farewell." Pale was her face before, but now The hue...

Book Apocryphal and Literary Influences on Galway Diasporic History

Download or read book Apocryphal and Literary Influences on Galway Diasporic History written by Gay Lynch and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apocryphal and Literary Influences on Galway Diasporic History establishes that apocryphal stories, in all their transformations, contribute to collective memory. Common characteristics frame their analysis: irreducible and enduring elements, often embedded in archetypal drama; lack of historical verification; establishment in collective memory; revivals after periods of dormancy; subjection to political and economic manipulation; implicit speculation; and literary transformations. This book contextualises Unsettled, an Australian novel about a convict play, derived from the Irish apocryphal story of The Magistrate of Galway, and documents previously unpublished primary material, including apocryphal stories passed through generations of descendents of settlers, Martin and Maria Lynch, and The Hibernian Father, a play by Irish convict, Edward Geoghegan. It puts forward new hypotheses: that the Irish hero Cuchulain may have provided a template for the archetypal and apocryphal story of the Magistrate of Galway; that disgraced Trinity College medical student and aspiring writer, Edward Geoghegan, enacted and recounted the same father-son archetypal conflict when he was transported to Botany Bay in 1839, and wrote the The Hibernian Father based on the Magistrate of Galway; that working-class Irish families were marginalised in South-east South Australian historical records; that oral apocryphal Lynch stories may be true; that Kate Grenville’s The Secret River (2006) offers an alternative history of the Hawkesbury River settlement, by some definitions apocryphal. The mystery of Geoghegan’s disappearance is solved, and knowledge about his life increased. French theorist Gerard Genette’s notion, advanced in Palimpsests: Literature in the Second Degree (1997), of all novels being transtextual, provides a model for the analysis of relationships between these key apocryphal texts.

Book A History of Women in Ireland 1500 1800

Download or read book A History of Women in Ireland 1500 1800 written by Mary O'Dowd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first general survey of the history of women in early modern Ireland. Based on an impressive range of source material, it presents the results of original research into women’s lives and experiences in Ireland from 1500 to 1800. This was a time of considerable change in Ireland as English colonisation, religious reform and urbanisation transformed society on the island. Gaelic society based on dynastic lordships and Brehon Law gave way to an anglicised and centralised form of government and an English legal system.
