Book Reflections on Faith and 17Th Century European American Colonists

Download or read book Reflections on Faith and 17Th Century European American Colonists written by Carlos R. Hamilton Jr. and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American colonial history is told through the stories of four young people who left Europe and its Age of Enlightenment to start new lives in an uncertain new world in this scholarly work. Carlos R. Hamilton Jr. aims to determine what experiences they and thousands of other immigrants had and the role those experiences played in influencing the future United States of America, including its government and culture. One of the primary reasons these immigrants settled in a new place thousands of miles from home was the prospect of being able to enjoy religious freedom. Other drivers included a desire to enjoy more economic opportunity and achieve security for one’s self and their family. While this study is limited to Anglo-European immigration, the historical background of homelands of African, Latino, and Asian immigrants are as important in understanding the circumstances of their many contributions to the subsequent culture of the United States of America. The author suggests that the same reasons people immigrated to what would become the United States hundreds of years ago remain primary reasons increasing numbers of immigrants are seeking residence in America today.

Book Women and the Law of Property in Early America

Download or read book Women and the Law of Property in Early America written by Marylynn Salmon and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first comprehensive study of women's property rights in early America, Marylynn Salmon discusses the effect of formal rules of law on women's lives. By focusing on such areas such as conveyancing, contracts, divorce, separate estates, and widows' provisions, Salmon presents a full picture of women's legal rights from 1750 to 1830. Salmon shows that the law assumes women would remain dependent and subservient after marriage. She documents the legal rights of women prior to the Revolution and traces a gradual but steady extension of the ability of wives to own and control property during the decades following the Revolution. The forces of change in colonial and early national law were various, but Salmon believes ideological considerations were just as important as economic ones. Women did not all fare equally under the law. In this illuminating survey of the jurisdictions of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina, Salmon shows regional variations in the law that affected women's autonomous control over property. She demonstrates the importance of understanding the effects of formal law on women' s lives in order to analyze the wider social context of women's experience.
