Book The Theology of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book The Theology of Jonathan Edwards written by Michael J. McClymond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2013 Christianity Today Book Award for Theology/Ethics Scholars and laypersons alike regard Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) as North America's greatest theologian. The Theology of Jonathan Edwards is the most comprehensive survey of his theology yet produced and the first study to make full use of the recently-completed seventy-three-volume online edition of the Works of Jonathan Edwards. The book's forty-five chapters examine all major aspects of Edwards's thought and include in-depth discussions of the extensive secondary literature on Edwards as well as Edwards's own writings. Its opening chapters set out Edwards's historical and personal theological contexts. The next thirty chapters connect Edwards's theological loci in the temporally-ordered way in which he conceptualized the theological enterprise-beginning with the triune God in eternity with his angels to the history of redemption as an expression of God's inner reality ad extra, and then back to God in eschatological glory. The authors analyze such themes as aesthetics, metaphysics, typology, history of redemption, revival, and true virtue. They also take up such rarely-explored topics as Edwards's missiology, treatment of heaven and angels, sacramental thought, public theology, and views of non-Christian religions. Running throughout the volume are what the authors identify as five basic theological constituents: trinitarian communication, creaturely participation, necessitarian dispositionalism, divine priority, and harmonious constitutionalism. Later chapters trace his influence on and connections with later theologies and philosophies in America and Europe. The result is a multi-layered analysis that treats Edwards as a theologian for the twenty-first-century global Christian community, and a bridge between the Christian West and East, Protestantism and Catholicism, conservatism and liberalism, and charismatic and non-charismatic churches.

Book Writings of the Rev Dr Thomas Cranmer

Download or read book Writings of the Rev Dr Thomas Cranmer written by Thomas Cranmer and published by General Books. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ANNOTATIONS ON THE ERUDITION OF A CHRISTIAN MAN. In the life of Cranmer (page 33, ) an account is given of The necessary doctrine and erudition for any Christian man, or, as it was usually called, The king's book, A. D. 1541, which contained erroneous doctrines of the church of Rome. Upon these Cranmer made some annotations, which have been preserved. They are in a manuscript of his own hand-writing, preserved in the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The three most important passages were first printed by Strype in his Appendix to the Life of Cranmer, and are entitled three discourses, on Faith, Justification, and Forgiveness of injuries; they are numbered 4, 87, 82 in the following pages. The whole of these annotations, eighty-seven in number, have been printed in the Rev. L. Richmond's Fathers of the English Church; in the present selection only such of them are given as appeared most likely to interest the reader. 4. As long as I persevere in his precepts and laws, I am one of the right inheritors of his kingdom. This book speaks of the pure Christian faith unfeigned, which is without colour, as well in heart, as in mouth. He that hath this faith, converteth from his sin, repenteth him, that he, like the prodigal son, vainly consumed his will, reason, wit, and other goods, which he received of the mere benefit of his heavenly Father, to his said Father's displeasure; and applies himself wholly to please him again, and trusts assuredly, that for Christ's sake, he will and does remit his sin, withdraws his indignation, delivers him from hell, from the power of the infernal spirit, takes him to his mercy, and makes him his own son and his own heir: and he has also the very Christian hope, that after this life he shall reign ever with Christ in his king...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If, as some writer has said, "Unrest is the characteristic of our age," is it less true to affirm that our craving after knowledge is not confined exclusively to the profane sciences? In the domain of literature we find many turning from the vague, insipid writings of the day to the more solid intellectual food of medieval times. And nowhere is this more apparent than in our devotions. The old and familiar "Six Sundays" of the youthful Aloysius, the June devotion of all Ca tholie schools and colleges, are now to be yearly preceded by those of the "Angel of the Schools." As St. Thomas Aquinas is held to be par excellence the great theologian of the Catholic Church, nay, even the Doctor by whom her later Doctors were guided in their writings, we are safe in yielding to the impulse to choose him for our special patron of science and study. And could we better show our earnestness as clients than by meditating on his life, his virtues, his own mode of study, and the motives that actuated every thought of his vast mind, every movement of his noble heart? The precious little volume before us is destined to do a big work in its English costume. It has been translated for all that wish to warm their heart in the rays of this great, theological sun; for all that desire to enjoy the special protection and intercession of the saint; for all that would find a practical aid in their devotion. The "Six Sundays " of St. Thomas, properly made, cannot fail, in colleges especially, to recruit the army of the Lord. Our youth will be in Spirited by the example of so valiant a champion to follow in his footsteps and make piety the foundation of learning. Who, upon reading the story of St. Thomas's investiture with the Holy Girdle, would not ambition enrolment in the "Angelic Militia," of which he is the noble leader? Who would not aspire to gird themselves with his Cord to which are annexed so many powerful auxiliaries for the combat, so many rewards for the victory? The Hymns and Prayers of the Angelic Doctor, the Daily Devotions of Father von Cochem at the end of the little book, are treasures of piety well calculated to stir up devotion in the coldest heart and quicken the fervor of the most devout. May this gem of Manuals find a place in every school and college and household of our broad, fair land, and may saints be multiplied by its use!

Book excerpt: St. Alphonsus writes: “a single bad book will be sufficient to cause the destruction of a monastery.” Pope Pius XII wrote in 1947 at the beatification of Blessed Maria Goretti: “There rises to Our lips the cry of the Saviour: 'Woe to the world because of scandals!' (Matthew 18:7). Woe to those who consciously and deliberately spread corruption-in novels, newspapers, magazines, theaters, films, in a world of immodesty!” We at St. Pius X Press are calling for a crusade of good books. Book The Silence of St Thomas

Download or read book The Silence of St Thomas written by Josef Pieper and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single theme runs through the three essays on St. Thomas gather in this book. It is the theme of mystery or, more exactly, the response of the searching human intellect to the fact of mystery. Both the fact and the response are suggested in a short biography of St. Thomas that forms the first essay and are then sketched out in detail by a presentation of the "negative element" in his philosophy. The third essay shows that contemporary Existentialism is in basic agreement with the philosophia perennis on this fundamental element of philosophical thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical System of St. Thomas Before the last chapter of this treatise was in print, its lamented author had passed out of this world, in which he had done invaluable service to the Church of God. While the present translation was passing through the press, the translator also, Edward Heneage Dering, was suddenly called to his reward. The last composition that he printed (in the Tablet, Nov. 19, 1892), was the following short memoir of his friend and master in Scholastic science, Father Matteo Liberatore: "In Memoriam. "Sixty-seven years ago a boy of fifteen, whose book-learning had till then been in abeyance, by reason of his having wonderfully been the mainstay of his widowed mother's house from the age of ten, entered a Jesuit school in Naples, and, rapidly passing all his competitors, was in the following year a novice in the Society of Jesus.
