Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of time, it has become increasingly difficult for human beings to get along. Somehow each one of us has been exposed to a level of animosity, misunderstandings, false accusations, betrayals, and deceptions. The shame of this situation is the fact that, for the most part, it comes from people we love and who are very close to us: friends, family members, coworkers, and so on. Thus, throughout the present book, which is the first volume, we try to bring sparks of light on certain dark spots that we presume are responsible for triggering misfortunate thoughts and behaviors in human beings. Those dark spots are the vehicles through which are conducted ungratefulness, delusion, frustration, and anger. Inattention to the expressions of our own mind and insensibility to the expressions of our body favor the elaboration and the enlargement of darkness within us. Then our presentation is a juxtaposition of philosophical concepts and philanthropic approaches centered on gaining more knowledge and mastering of self. In brief, we propose a metaphysical learning of who we are as human beings. This will lead to the concourse of the universal wisdom, which is the authentic wisdom. Once initiated, we need to apply it to ourselves and share it with others through actions of quietness, of tolerance, of love, of gratefulness, and of happiness. It is above all sectarian faith and beliefs, and it is beyond politics and religions; it is simply the liberation of the thoughts from vanity, prejudice, bigotry, envy, disdain, indulgence, and wretchedness.

Book African Proverbs for All Ages

Download or read book African Proverbs for All Ages written by Johnnetta Betsch Cole and published by Roaring Brook Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Proverbs for All Ages is a beautifully-illustrated, engaging picture book about the power of proverbs, how they evolve over time, and the wisdom of various cultures in Africa. It has been said that a proverb is a short sentence based on long experience. Whether you are young or old, proverbs can open your mind to a whole new way of seeing the world. We underestimate children when we assume they are incapable of understanding metaphor and deeper meaning. There are multiple ways that children learn, but for each method by which they learn, they need their imagination engaged and their visual sensibilities ignited. And as adults, we underestimate ourselves when we allow our lives to be about practical matters only. Proverbs can stir our soul and spark our imagination. --Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D. President Emerita of Spelman and Bennett Colleges In African Proverbs for All Ages, noted anthropologist and educator Dr. Johnetta Betsch Cole and award-winning illustrator Nelda LaTeef invite children and adults to explore and reflect on complex notions about relationships, identity, society, and the human condition. Book The Wisdom of the World

  • Author : Rémi Brague

Download or read book The Wisdom of the World written by Rémi Brague and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the ancient Greeks looked up into the heavens, they saw not just sun and moon, stars and planets, but a complete, coherent universe, a model of the Good that could serve as a guide to a better life. How this view of the world came to be, and how we lost it (or turned away from it) on the way to becoming modern, make for a fascinating story, told in a highly accessible manner by Rémi Brague in this wide-ranging cultural history. Before the Greeks, people thought human action was required to maintain the order of the universe and so conducted rituals and sacrifices to renew and restore it. But beginning with the Hellenic Age, the universe came to be seen as existing quite apart from human action and possessing, therefore, a kind of wisdom that humanity did not. Wearing his remarkable erudition lightly, Brague traces the many ways this universal wisdom has been interpreted over the centuries, from the time of ancient Egypt to the modern era. Socratic and Muslim philosophers, Christian theologians and Jewish Kabbalists all believed that questions about the workings of the world and the meaning of life were closely intertwined and that an understanding of cosmology was crucial to making sense of human ethics. Exploring the fate of this concept in the modern day, Brague shows how modernity stripped the universe of its sacred and philosophical wisdom, transforming it into an ethically indifferent entity that no longer serves as a model for human morality. Encyclopedic and yet intimate, The Wisdom of the World offers the best sort of history: broad, learned, and completely compelling. Brague opens a window onto systems of thought radically different from our own.

Book Golden Rules and Silver Rules of Humanity

Download or read book Golden Rules and Silver Rules of Humanity written by Q. C. Terry and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden/Silver Rule precepts and associated maxims are the pillars upon which most major religious and philosophical traditions, moral and legal codes, are founded, that also relate to science. Dating back almost to the beginnings of civilized culture in ancient Africa over 5,000 years ago, and elsewhere, the rules are among the earliest oral civil precepts/codes to be committed to print regarding appropriate social conduct across most situations. This wisdom inquiry offers, some background, an integrative theory for most of the versions of the precepts found amongst the worlds cultures, in addition to, some newly created reciprocity labels, and maxims, based on mutuality, generosity, altruism and ethical levels. A draft integration of some new mutuality rules, and interaction relations, for science, religion, and philosophy, are offered, along with some sample optimums for various life style types on an altruism-egoism ethics scale.

Book The Wisdom Pattern

  • Author : Richard Rohr
  • Publisher : Franciscan Media
  • Release : 2020-05-01
  • ISBN : 1632533472
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book The Wisdom Pattern written by Richard Rohr and published by Franciscan Media. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Order, by itself, normally wants to eliminate any disorder and diversity creating a narrow and cognitive rigidity in both people and systems. Disorder, by itself, closes us off from any primal union, meaning, and eventually even sanity in people and systems. Reorder, or transformation of people and systems, happens when both are seen to work together” – from the preface. Through time, a universal pattern can be found in all societies, spiritualities, and philosophies. We see it in the changing seasons, the stories of Scripture in the Bible, the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the rise and fall of civilizations, and even personally in our lives. In this updated version of one of his earliest books, Father Richard Rohr clearly illuminates how understanding and embracing this pattern can give us hope in difficult times and the courage to push through disorganization and even great chaos to find a new way of being in the world. “We are indeed 'saved' by knowing and surrendering to this universal pattern of reality. Knowing the full pattern allows us to let go of our first order, trust the disorder, and, sometimes even hardest of all—to trust the new reorder. Three big leaps of faith for all of us, and each of a different character.” —from the introduction.

This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renunciation Through Wisdom is a collection of essays originally written in Bengali and published by Srila Prabhupada in India during the 1940s. They were later translated into English by his disciples. In these essays Srila Prabhupada expands on themes found in the Bhagavad-gita, discussing such topics as why people are averse to God, the ultimate causes of suffering, and how the world’s troubles are extraordinarily fleeting when seen from the standpoint of eternity. Students of Srila Prabhupada will recognize the same common-sense writing style in Renunciation Through Wisdom as in his later, well-known works such as Srimad-Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita As It Is, as well as his expertise at distilling the essence of India's ancient Vedic wisdom into powerful, convincing, practical, and easily readable directives.
