Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ema Moreau is a teenage girl who does not have much but might just lose the most important thing she has left—her younger sister, Silver. Silver is sick and getting worse each day, but luckily, she is the next on a list to receive a miraculous cure from a flower that can be used to treat any ailment. Unfortunately, soldiers from the kingdom have come and claimed that they will be retrieving the flower used to make the medicine for the king. In desperation, Ema takes the chance to make it to the flower first. Others from the village, who were originally planning to help make the medicine for Silver, now can see the chance to use the flower for their own purposes instead. While traveling, Ema is tracked down by a mysterious boy named Rainald. He is clever and sneaky, and he seems to know a lot about her. Though wanting the miracle flower for himself, Rainald proposes that working together will increase the odds that one of them will end up with the flower. Though Ema does not like the proposition, she has no other choice but to agree. As the two travel and escape dangerous circumstances, they even begin to become friends, something that Ema does not know much about either. As they become close, Rainald remains very protective of his plans, identity, and even information on Ema’s own tragic past. Has she finally found someone who is willing to help her? Or should she be vigilant to the threat that Rainald really is just keeping her around as long as it benefits him? Nothing is certain, except that Ema is not going to be the same person at the end of this journey as when she began.

Book Postmarks from a Political Traveler

Download or read book Postmarks from a Political Traveler written by Phil Karber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As spring and summer vacations beckon, this book invites and incites a whole new approach to travel. "Postmarks from a Political Traveler" is a series of travel recollections confronting the troubling topics of roots and racism, polar bears and climate change, anti-Americanism, and the war in Afghanistan. The book opens with the story of the author s experience growing up in the Jim Crow South, traveling in apartheid South Africa, and living in the post-apartheid South Africa of 2009 and 2010. It explores the not-so-dissimilar roots and racism of the United States and South Africa, as well as the cross-fertilization of ideas between the two countries. The next installment chronicles two trips to Churchill, Manitoba, where the planet s largest population of polar bears congregate each October. It recounts the dramatic changes that have occurred in both the human and the polar bear communities in just the last decade and shows how the bears have become an Arctic version of the proverbial canary in the coalmine. Then the book shifts to the author s journey back to the United States on a German freighter with a rabidly anti-American captain. Woven into this account of life aboard a long haul ship are threads of the author s travels and anti-American encounters over a decade of living in Africa and Asia. The book concludes with reflections on trips to Afghanistan in 2004 and in 2012, describing the effects of war and conflict zone politics on women, education, refugees, and aid workers. What ties these episodes together is the author s commitment to social justice and to changing the world through travel and writing that is, affirming travel as a political act."

Book The Diva s Gift to the Shakespearean Stage

Download or read book The Diva s Gift to the Shakespearean Stage written by Pamela Allen Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diva's Gift to the Shakespearean Stage traces the transnational connections between Shakespeare's all-male stage and the first female stars in the West. The book is the first to use Italian and English plays and other sources to explore this relationship, focusing on the gifted actress whoradically altered female roles and expanded the horizons of drama just as the English were building their first paying theaters. By the time Shakespeare began to write plays, women had been acting professionally in Italian troupes for two decades, traveling across the Continent and acting in allgenres, including tragicomedy and tragedy. Some women became the first truly international stars, winning royal and noble patrons and literary admirers beyond Italy, with repeat tours in France and Spain.Elizabeth and her court caught wind of the Italians' success, and soon troupes with actresses came to London to perform. Through contacts direct and indirect, English professionals grew keenly aware of the mimetic revolution wrought by the skilled diva, who expanded the innamorata and made the typemore engaging, outspoken, and autonomous. Some English writers pushed back, treating the actress as a whorish threat to the all-male stage, which had long minimized female roles. Others saw a vital new model full of promise. Faced with rising demand for Italian-style plays, Lyly, Marlowe, Kyd, andShakespeare used Italian models from scripted and improvised drama to turn out stellar female parts in the mode of the actress, altering them in significant ways while continuing to use boys to play them. Writers seized on the comici's materials and methods to piece together pastoral, comic, andtragicomic plays from mobile theatergrams - plot elements, roles, stories, speeches, and star scenes, such as cross-dressing, the mad scene, and the sung lament. Shakespeare and his peers gave new prominence to female characters, marked their passions as un-English, and devised plots that figuredthem as self-aware agents, not counters traded between men. Playing up the skills and charisma of the boy player, they produced stunning roles charged with the diva's prodigious theatricality and alien glamour. Rightly perceived, the diva's celebrity and her acclaimed skills posed a radicalchallenge that pushed English playwrights to break with the past in enormously generative and provocative ways.
