Book Chincoteague and Assateague Islands

Download or read book Chincoteague and Assateague Islands written by Nan DeVincent-Hayes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000-06-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thriving barrier islands of Chincoteague and Assateague entice over a million tourists to their shores every year. Adjacent to one another, these parcels of land jutting into the Atlantic have a symbiotic relationship—Chincoteague, a modern, developed community that thrives on tourism, helps attract visitors to neighboring Assateague, which in turn acts as a natural buffer against the surging tides and is home to Assateague Island National Seashore, a state park that provides protection for native flora and fauna and leisure activities for the nature lover. Overlapping the border between Maryland and Virginia, Assateague Island remains an undisturbed natural habitat boasting extensive wetlands and wildlife. Images of the native inhabitants of this area abound—the ponies, birds, and sea life take center stage, while the sandy dunes and rolling ocean provide a beautiful backdrop. The families who made the island of Chincoteague their home, from as early as 1650, were a tough breed and, over the years, made many contributions to the improvement of their community. Schools, churches, and businesses were established, bridges were built, roads were paved, and waterways made navigable—all of this visually documented and now available in this remarkable volume.

Book excerpt: Assateague, a sandy, marshy, and swamp-like land off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula, is a paradise to beach lovers, bird watchers, photographers, hunters, and fishermen. Native Americans, the first visitors, found an abundant supply of waterfowl, fish, and shellfish for hunting and fishing. Assateague was patented in 1687, and early settlers farmed, raised livestock, cut timber, and had salt works. The construction of the Assateague Lighthouse in 1833 encouraged the growth of the village. In 1875, the US Life Saving station was established. The men of the area worked on the water fishing, clamming, and oystering or worked for one of the fish factories or the two government agencies. Villagers migrated from the area lured by amenities on Chincoteague, the effect of the purchase of land surrounding the village, and the automation of the lighthouse. The US Fish and Wildlife Service purchased the island in 1943 as a national wildlife refuge.

However, situated between the cornfields in the vast farmlands of central Pennsylvania is a small high school with a story that needs to be told. Surprisingly few have heard of or recognize this incredible team. From their humble beginnings in 1962, the Southern Columbia Tigers have become the most successful high school football program that Pennsylvania has ever seen. But success on the gridiron has not always been easy for the Tigers and their devoted fans. They experienced their share of growing pains and endured a multi-season losing streak that saw the program nearly dropped by the school's administration. However, Southern played with grit and determination that would lay the foundation for the dynasty to come. The winners of a record-eleven Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association football championships, the Tigers have been named the small-school national football champions three consecutive years. Southern's head coach has the most career victories in Pennsylvania high school football history. The program has produced numerous college players and a Super Bowl champion. The team has experienced the pinnacle of success, endured and overcame unthinkable tragedies, and has never compromised ethics and academics for the sake of victory. This is the story of the Southern Columbia Tigers.

Book excerpt: Carl Wade Ryder-brother, son, and all-around good person-was murdered on August 5, 2006.Blood was found at his home in Franklin County, PA.All evidence pointed to one suspect: Scott North, a former employee of Carl's, a regular attendee of Franklin County courts, and the son of a Chambersburg, PA cop. After burglarizing a tavern, a judge granted him work release, and then another dismissed a recent gun charge. Days later, he ran from his unsupervised worksite and began a crime spree that may have ended with the murder of Carl Wade Ryder. The evidence was all there, but the police ignored most of it.With nowhere else to turn, the family scoured the byways and hillsides of Amberson, Path Valley, and other areas in adjoining counties in search of Carl's body. And finally, they found him in Huntingdon County, PA, 27 minutes away from his home. When his body was found, the police revisited the investigation-but only by expanding the murder case to Huntingdon County, despite the blood in Carl's home. For a year and a half, the case was passed off between the counties. With no help from officials, how could the Ryder family bring their beloved son & brother justice?Black Clover is the true story of the heart-wrenching small town murder of the author's brother and the lengths at which the legal system can be manipulated, if the family doesn't fight back.
