Book The Long Trail

Download or read book The Long Trail written by Ian Tyson and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Canadian icon on his longstanding love of the West and his life in "one of the last true cowboy countries on either side of the border." "I live on a ranch about six miles east of the town of Longview and the old Cowboy Trail in the foothills of the Rockies. On a perfect day, like today, I can't imagine being anywhere else in the world. Of course, I'm not going to say there aren't those other days when you think, 'What am I doing here?' It's beautiful country and it can be brutally tough as well." —Ian Tyson Ian Tyson's journey to the West began in the unlikely city of Victoria, BC, where he rode his dad's horses on the weekends and met cowboys in the pages of Will James's books, and eventually followed that cowboy dream to rodeo competition. Laid up after breaking a leg, he learned the guitar, and drifted east, becoming a key songwriter and performer in the folk revival movement. But the West always beckoned, and when his marriage to his partner and collaborator Sylvia broke up and the music scene threatened to grind him down, he retreated to a ranch and work with cutting horses. Soon, he'd bought a ranch in Alberta and found a new voice as the renowned Western Revival singer-songwriter and horseman he is today. This book is Ian's reflection on that journey...

Book excerpt: "Why are you hiking the John Muir Trail solo?""You've never backpacked before, how are you going to hike the entire John Muir Trail?"These were the two most common questions that Christy was asked by her coworkers in Corporate America. They were legitimate questions. Christy couldn't put into words the reason she needed to hike more than 220 miles in the California High Sierra Mountains, but her gut told her that she needed to. After spending six months preparing by hiking, reading books, and watching documentaries, Christy began hiking the world-famous trail on August 31, 2016, southbound. Throughout her journey, Christy encountered dry creek beds, making a wrong turn, a hail storm, freezing temperatures, trail friends, incredible views, and experiences that would change her life. Hiking over ten mountain passes gave Christy a lot of time to think about her nine-year marriage that was falling apart, gave her time to make new friends, and gave her the strength she needed off the trail. This is one woman's account of the three weeks she spent on the iconic trail.

Book excerpt: A modern, feminist take on the classic choose-your-own-journey book, inspiring readers to embrace the fact that there is no singular right path—just your own! So many women enter their adult lives believing that they should know where they are going and how to get there. This can make life decisions feel intimidating and overwhelming. While some choices that lie ahead are fairly predictable, such as those surrounding career, partnership, and motherhood, the effects of these choices can lead to more complicated and unexpected turns that are seldom discussed. Rather than suggesting a rule book, Rebekah Bastian, vice president at Zillow and recognized thought leader, inspires you to Blaze Your Own Trail. “I have the benefit of being a living example of crooked paths, magnificent screw-ups, and shocking successes,” she writes. Through storylines and supportive data that explore workplace sexism, career changes, marriage, child-rearing, existential crises, and everything in between, you will learn to embrace and feel less alone in your own nonlinear journey. Even better, you can turn back decisions and make different ones. Blaze Your Own Trail includes nineteen possible outcomes and many routes to get there. You will find that you have the strength to make it through any of them.

Book excerpt: Kenneth Fly went from town living to the life of a farm boy during the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s. It was a life of hard work without luxury. Instead of watching television and playing video games, he grew up working in the fields of North Carolina, handling firearms, operating machinery, and participating in other activities and tasks that are foreign to the youngsters, youth, and even men of today. In this series of personal narratives and anecdotes, Fly recalls those days with detail and humor. Life wasn't always easy, but his mother did whatever was necessary to make a good home and loving environment for her family. His dad was a hardworking master carpenter whose behavior showed anyone watching that life is about morals, hard work, and self-respect. The Fly family is special because they so rarely complained and always managed to stay happy. For them, life wasn't fancy, but relying on common sense and each other made it sweet.

Book Angels in my Life

Download or read book Angels in my Life written by Jack N Wood and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a short stay on Angel Island, in the bay across from San Francisco, I boarded the USS Tasker H. Bliss on October 4, 1941, along with a few hundred others. I learned, after we were at sea, we were probably headed for the Philippines. I had been assigned to the newly organized 680th Ordinance Company (Aviation Pursuit), US Army Air Force, and was headed for an area very close to war…more so than I had suspected. At night, it was lights out and no smoking on deck. This made me believe the war in Europe might be getting closer to home. We were being sent to the Philippines to assist the Filipino army that General Douglas MacArthur had been training to meet an expected Japanese invasion. MacArthur was sent to the Philippines by the US government in 1935 as a military advisor and in 1937 he was made the commander of all the armed forces in the Philippine islands. He realized the threat of an invasion by the Japanese, and he had desperately been trying to fortify the Philippines. He had pleaded for more money to build up the Filipino army and more troops from the US, but his request had been ignored until the Japanese began to invade Indochina.

Book My Life of Ministry Writing Teaching and Traveling

Download or read book My Life of Ministry Writing Teaching and Traveling written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In My Life of Ministry, Writing, Teaching, and Traveling: The Autobiography of an Old Mines Missionary, I present my life as a child growing up in a French village about sixty miles south of St. Louis in the middle of the twentieth century. After eighteen years of life in Old Mines, the oldest settlement in the state of Missouri, I moved to St. Louis for four years and then to St. Meinrad, Indiana, for four years where education opened my eyes to a world very much larger than my village of origin. Life continued for me after ordination as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church in Springfield and Joplin, Missouri. Because my life is the thread stitching together this book, I have made it manageable by dividing it into four categories: ministry, writing, teaching, and travel. These categories contain the stories of others whose life threads of seventy years are woven into my lifetime tapestry. This is my autobiography—one of a missionary from Old Mines to the thirty-nine counties forming the southern third of the state of Missouri—composed during my seventieth year of life.

Book My Life Cursed or Blessed

Download or read book My Life Cursed or Blessed written by Karla Johnson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduated High School in 1971, three months pregnant. I left my mothers house with my Fianc. The only thing I took with me were the clothes on my back, the things I read in books, the things my Grandmother taught me which mainly involved cooking and cleaning, the Bible quotes and old folks tales my Grandmother used to say over and over, the few things my mother taught me during her brief and few periods of time into my life, and also a very special gift from God, which was the ability to play any musical instrument I chose to play. I thought I was grown and knew everything. What I didn't know was although I was very smart, I was also very naive. I got married in 1972 and had another baby in 1974. I worked for a police department from 1977 to 1985. I was in the Army National Guard from 1979 to 1985. So many unbelievable things happened to me during that time, both good and bad. So many more bad things happened than good that I started to think my life was cursed for some reason. It started to happen so much that finally I did not want to live any longer.
