This book offers facts and figures regarding famous historical figures, such as John Hunter, Dr Crippen, Doc Holliday, and Paul Revere, exploring how their connections to dentistry shaped them, as well as the story of the two young dentists who discovered the principles of general anaesthesia. Other chapters focus on the amazing ranges of teeth in animals, from the teeth in piranhas to the tusks and ivory of elephants and narwhals, looking at their biological and cultural significance. This book is appropriate for dentists, medical and dentistry students, and non-specialists to introduce the myriad interesting aspects relating to teeth. Please note that print volumes do not include full colour. Book Silent Victories

  • Author : John W. Ward
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Silent Victories written by John W. Ward and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans' health improved dramatically over the twentieth century. Public health programs for disease and injury prevention were responsible for much of this advance. Over the century, America's public health system grew dramatically, employing science and political authority in response to an increasing array of health problems. As the disease burden of the old scourges of infection, perinatal mortality, and dietary deficiencies began to lift, public health's mandate expanded to take on new health threats, such as those resulting from a changing workplace, the rise of the automobile, and chronic and complex conditions caused by smoking, diet and other lifestyle and environmental factors. Public health measures almost always occur on contested ground; accordingly, controversies and recriminations over past failures often persist. In contrast, public health's many successes, even the imperfect ones, become part of the fabric of everyday life, a fact already apparent early in the last century, when C.E.A. Winslow reminded his peers that the lives saved and healthy years extended were the "silent victories" of public health. In its exploration of ten major public health issues addressed in the 20th century, Silent Victories takes a unique approach: for each issue, leading scientists in the field trace the discoveries, practices and programs that reduced morbidity and mortality from disease and injury, and an accompanying chapter by a historian or social scientist highlights key moments or conflicts that shaped public health action on that issue. The book concludes with a look toward the challenges public health must face in the future. Silent Victories reveals the lessons of history in a format designed to appeal to students, health professionals and the public seeking to understand how public health advanced the country's health in the 20th century, and the challenges to protecting health in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robbers have always seen themselves as the cream of the underworld; the top of the criminal aristocracy in and out prison. This is the story of the men and women who go to great lengths to organise a heist which, if all goes well, should keep them in luxury for many years, if not for life. And if it fails then often it is another sort of life. From the Tunnel digging heist of the Bank of Australia robbery in 1828 to the Cash in Transit robberies of today, Morton and Lobez cover the stories of the robbers and robberies of the past 200 years; through the bushrangers; Squizzy Taylor and his crew; the train robbers of the 1930s; men such as Jockey Smith, 'Mad Dog' Cox, Chuckie Bennett and the ill-fated Victorian Bookie Robbery, Melbourne's Joey Turner, as well as the less well known 'Angel of Death', 'The Country Bandit', 'The Pushbike Bandit', 'The Gentleman Bandit' and a hundred more; the lives—their own and others—they ruined; those who went to the gallows and the very few who redeemed themselves.

Book Blessed Are the Bank Robbers

Download or read book Blessed Are the Bank Robbers written by Chas Smith and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rollicking true story of Bibles and bank robberies in Southern California, from a talented and highly praised gonzo journalist Chas Smith grew up deeply enmeshed in the evangelical Christian world that grew out of Southern California in the late 1960s. His family included famous missionaries and megachurch pastors, but his cousin Daniel Courson was Grandma’s favorite. Smith looked up to Cousin Danny. He was handsome, adventurous, and smart, earned a degree from Bible college, and settled into a family and a stable career. Needless to say, it was a big surprise when Cousin Danny started robbing banks. Known as the “Floppy Hat Bandit,” Courson robbed 19 of them in a torrid six-week spree before being caught and sentenced to seven years. When he tried to escape, they tacked on another year. And when he finally got out, despite seeming to be back on the straight and narrow, Cousin Danny disappeared. Banks started getting robbed again. It seemed Cousin Danny might be gunning for the record. Smith’s Blessed Are the Bank Robbers is the wild, and wildly entertaining, story of an all-American anti-hero. It’s a tale of bank robberies, art and jewel heists, high-speed chases, fake identities, encrypted Swiss email accounts, jilted lovers, and the dark side of an evangelical family (and it wasn’t just Danny; an uncle was mixed up with the mujahideen). It’s a book about what it means to live inside the church and outside the law.
