The preliminary draft had lain gathering dust in the UK going absolutely nowhere for years and so he simply decided there and then that fate had dictated that now was the time to return to New Zealand and finish the novel. Or fail in the attempt. The Writer’s Diary is a contemporary account of the trials and tribulations, highs and lows, hopes and fears of someone trying to give birth to a piece of writing that others might enjoy, and that might even be commercially successful. It was certainly a madcap scheme. But then again story telling and storytellers are as old as time itself and he was simply carrying on an ancient tradition.
