Book The Three String Double Bass by Christopher Boyder

Download or read book The Three String Double Bass by Christopher Boyder written by Christopher Boyder and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So finally here it is! A definitive handbook to ALL your questions about rare (gut/silk) three-string double basses. Where do they come from? Who made them? Who played them? How much are they worth? Should you go ahead and restore? How should you play one? What is their relevance in today's modern age?The gut three-string double bass first appeared in the late 18th century. They were distinctly different to other "bass" role instruments at their time. The size dimensions of the three-string instrument resembled what appears in the modern day full size 3⁄4 and 4/4 orchestral instruments. This book will give descriptive information about makers of the three-string double bass. It will provide an explanation regarding its pivotal role in promoting and establishing the standardized orchestral double bass and it will discuss the soloists, repertoire and composers of the instrument. The gut three-string double bass is usually considered to be a rare piece of antiquity, the original instrument that solo double bassists performed on. It is henceforth suggested that these pioneering soloists were responsible in creating the turning point for the resemblance of what we have come to see and hear in the modern double basses. Finally, this book will provide advice on treatises and methods for Baroque/Classical ensemble and string performers regarding correct period performance practice and technique. A composer's influences regarding period sonorities will be briefly mentioned. The gut three-string double bass had an extremely brief circulation in history! This book can also be seen as an introduction and an equally rare historical description of one of the "last rare relicts" of an instrument that may have otherwise "sneaked" its way past historical records completely...

Book excerpt: The Art of Double Bass Playing is the result of a collaboration between Warren Benfield, an outstanding bassist/teacher and James Seay Dean, Jr., Associate Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, a skilled writer/editor. Warren Benfield started his professional career in 1934 as the youngest member of the Minneapolis Symphony. Moving on to the St. Louis Symphony as principal bass and then to the Philadelphia Orchestra as co-principal bass, he joined the Chicago Symphony in 1949 where he remained until his retirement in 1987. Benfield has always been dedicated to teaching, and during his years with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he was on the faculties of Northwestern University and DePaul University. He has also given many master classes and lectures, including two in China. Since retiring, he is continuing to teach a few students at the American Conservatory and at Chicago's Merit School for underprivileged children, which focuses on the arts. Benfield's particular aim is to teach the approach of the double bass from a musical, as well as a technical standpoint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TheDouble Bass: How it Works provides information not usually found in traditional instrumental music method books. When used concurrently with any method book, the student's learning experience is expanded beyond "learning how to play" to include all topics relevant to the subject instrument. As the lessons proceed, the students will be able to associate their playing experiences with information on how the subject instrument produces sound, works mechanically, evolves, is made, and how to care for it. This expanded knowledge provides a player with greater insight into that instrument's relationship to others in its family and to those other instruments with which the player will be working. The result of the exposure to this enriched experience is a well-rounded musician in place of one who can just play an instrument.
