Book excerpt: From Earth, Venus and Mercury, three Musketeers of Space, accompanied by a female D'Artagnan, rocket out in a grim battle against the League of the Cold Worlds!ExcerptThey sauntered through the crowded, krypton lit street bordering the great New York spaceport, casually, as though there was not a reward on their heads. An Earthman, a Venusian, and a huge Mercurian, looking merely like three ordinary space-sailors in their soiled, drab jackets and trousers. But inwardly John Thorn, the lean, dark-headed Earthman of the trio, was queerly tense. He felt the warning of that sixth sense which tells of being watched. His brown, hard-chinned face showed nothing of what he felt, and he was smiling as though telling some joke as he spoke to his two companions."We're being followed," he said. "I've felt it, since we left the spaceport. I don't know who it is."Sual Av, the bald, bow-legged Venusian, laughed merrily as though at a jest. His bright green eyes glistened, and there was a wide grin on his ugly, froglike face."The police?" he chuckled.Gunner Welk, the huge Mercurian, growled in his throat. His shock of yellow hair seemed to bristle on his head, his massive face and cold blue eyes hardening belligerently."How in hell's name would the Earth police spot us so quickly after our arrival?" he muttered."I don't think it's the police," John Thorn said, his black eyes still smiling casually. "Stop at the next corner, and we'll see who passes us."At the corner gleamed a luminous red sign, "THE CLUB OF WEARY SPACEMEN." In and out of the vibration-joint, thus benevolently named, were streaming dozens of the motley throng that jammed the blue-lit street. Reedy-looking red Martians, squat and surly Jovians, hard-bitten Earthmen-sailors from all the eight inhabited worlds, spewed up by the great spaceport nearby. There were many naval officers and men, too-a few in the crimson of Mars, the green of Venus and blue of Mercury, but most of them in the gray uniform of the Earth Navy.

Book The History of the Science fiction Magazine

Download or read book The History of the Science fiction Magazine written by Michael Ashley and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of three volumes that chart the history of the science fiction magazine from the earliest days to the present. This first volume looks at the exuberant years of the pulp magazines. It traces the growth and development of the science fiction magazines from when Hugo Gernsback launched the very first, Amazing Stories, in 1926 through to the birth of the atomic age and the death of the pulps in the early 1950s. These were the days of the youth of science fiction, when it was brash, raw and exciting: the days of the first great space operas by Edward Elmer Smith and Edmond Hamilton, through the cosmic thought variants by Murray Leinster, Jack Williamson and others to the early 1940s when John W. Campbell at Astounding did his best to nurture the infant genre into adulthood. Under him such major names as Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, A. E. van Vogt and Theodore Sturgeon emerged who, along with other such new talents as Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, helped create modern science fiction. For over forty years magazines were at the heart of science fiction and this book considers how the magazines, and their publishers, editors and authors influenced the growth and perception of this fascinating genre.

Planeteers are charged with the contact of alien life on planets within the Force’s area of control. Boris’ first big assignment is on the planet Aqua. The Force plans to study the planet, if the locals can be brought to some peaceful agreement. And, if they can come to accept the Force. Boris’ ingenuity and the Force’s technology may just save the day. Boris’ next assignment: The Space Force controls the planet Golden where years ago a planeteer’s ship mysteriously disappeared. The planet Golden boasts a technology busting force field and an alien life-theme curiously similar to the fantastic geryons described in Dante’s Inferno. Scientific investigation of the field and of the aliens continues along with settlement of a small area of the planet not affected by the field. When a group of high powered scientists arrive with new ideas for investigation, a former planeteer agrees to assist them. The planeteer finds himself not only up against an alien life force, but confronted with the megalomaniacal ambitions of an Earth-descended group of genetically engineered humans with extraordinary paranormal powers and resources. The Space Force and Boris’ skills will be needed to save this planet. Then, while on vacation on Kappa, an idyllic planet, Boris again is called to action by the Force. A powerful mind-altering native drug threatens the exploitation of the natives and the inevitable addictive behavior of earth-descended humans. Boris must fight his own drug induced demons while struggling to free himself and his companion Brenda from the crazed criminal smugglers. Space Force is a collection of three early Saberhagen works: Planeteer, The Golden People, and The Water Of Thought.

Book Displacing Desire

  • Author : Beth E. Notar
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2006-10-31
  • ISBN : 0824830717
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Displacing Desire written by Beth E. Notar and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do millions of people from around the world flock to Dali, a small borderland town in the Himalayan foothills of southwest China? "Lonely planeteers"— American, European, and Israeli backpackers named for the guidebook they carry—trek halfway across the globe to "get off the beaten track," yet converge here to drink coffee, eat banana pancakes, and share music from home. Coastal Chinese who are prospering in the phenomenal economic growth of China’s reform era travel thousands of miles to sing songs and dress up as their favorite characters from a revolutionary-era movie musical. Overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia as well as a new generation of mainland youth follow in the footsteps of heroes and villains from Hong Kong martial arts novels, seeking an experience of a Buddhist "wild, wild, West" at a martial arts theme park dubbed "Hollywood East," or "Daliwood." Inspired by representations in popular culture that engender fantasies of the exotic, these tourists, Western and Chinese, journey to Dali, Yunnan, in search of an imagined place where they can indulge their craving for authenticity, display their status in the present, and act out their nostalgia for the past. Based on more than a decade of ethnographic research, Beth Notar explores struggles over place as people in Dali attempt to represent their historical identity and define their future. Displacing Desire takes representation into the realm of practice to consider the ways in which those who are represented must contend with their image in popular culture and the material after-effects of representations even decades after their original production. It contributes to an exploration of travel as performance of nostalgia, fantasy, and status. More specifically it contributes to an understanding of the growth of consumer culture in China, examining what China’s modernization process and market economy mean for different social actors in their struggles over power and place.
