Book Putting the I in IHY

Download or read book Putting the I in IHY written by Barbara J. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting the “I” in IHY This book is about international cooperation. It demonstrates how the power of scienti?c imagination and investigation can bring together people form all continents in almost all countries around the globe. In presenting this impressive result, we can understand, how much unifying force the quest for understanding our universe and using outer space for that purpose have. Astronomy is far away from being a “political” area of science. But is has enormous political effects – and all of these effects are positive. This book about the international aspects and achievements of the “International Heliophysical Year (IHY) 2007” can be regarded as a compendium of the fertile impacts of conducting research in this ?eld. The main focus, as the title implicates, is the international cooperation, which has emerged from this grassroots initiative. North and South, industrialized and developing countries have been coordinating their efforts and have been learning from each other in a mutual partnership under a joint understanding of sharing the scienti?c bene?ts. Through this, trans-border networks have been created and scienti?c as well as cultural exchange took place.

Download or read book Astronomy And Relativistic Astrophysics New Phenomena And New States Of Matter In The Universe Proceedings Of The Third Workshop Iwara07 written by Horst Stocker and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents scientific research on the central theme of new states of matter and new phenomena in the universe. The topics covered range from the big bang, through topics including the formation of exotic stars, black holes and the plasma of quarks and gluons by heavy ion reactions, to the influence of dark matter and dark energy in the evolution of the universe.Scientific interest in these themes has been growing: together with the development of major projects such as AUGER, LHC, FERMI Telescope, FAIR/GSI and GEO/LIGO, the diversity and scope of research on such themes has been on the rise. The content is detailed enough to capture the interest of experts in the field and is useful for future explorations on these fascinating themes.

Book Atomic Astrophysics and Spectroscopy

Download or read book Atomic Astrophysics and Spectroscopy written by Anil K. Pradhan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectroscopy enables the precise study of astronomical objects and phenomena. Bridging the gap between physics and astronomy, this is the first integrated graduate-level textbook on atomic astrophysics. It covers the basics of atomic physics and astrophysics, including state-of-the-art research applications, methods and tools. The content is evenly balanced between the physical foundations of spectroscopy and their applications to astronomical objects and cosmology. An undergraduate knowledge of physics is assumed, and relevant basic material is summarized at the beginning of each chapter. The material is completely self-contained and features sufficient background information for self-study. Advanced users will find it handy for spectroscopic studies. A website hosted by the authors contains updates, corrections, exercises and solutions, as well as news items from physics and astronomy related to spectroscopy. Book Principles of Multimessenger Astronomy

Download or read book Principles of Multimessenger Astronomy written by Miroslav D.. Filipović and published by Programme: Aas-Iop Astronomy. This book was released on 2021 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy has traditionally relied on capturing photons from cosmic sources to be able to understand the Universe. During the 20th and 21st centuries, different messengers have been added to the astronomer's toolset : cosmic rays, neutrinos, and most recently gravitational waves. Each of these messengers opens a new window on the Universe, and a modern astronomer must be familiar with them. As multimessenger astronomy becomes part of the mainstream, each messenger must be understood not only as its own astronomical domain, but as part of a whole endeavour. A broad understanding of these messengers and their relationship to each other is the main goal of this book. The unique physics of each messenger is introduced, as well as the physics of their detection and interpretation. An additional focus is the discussion of techniques and topics that are common to more than one messenger. Treatments of historical background, the effect of the Earth's atmosphere, the transfer of radiation and measurement techniques are aimed at giving the reader a broad understanding of this new way of observing the cosmos. Principles of multimessenger astronomy is designed to be both an introduction and reference to modern astronomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrobiology is one of the hottest areas of current research, reflecting not only impressive advances in the understanding of the origin of life but also the discovery of over 100 extrasolar planets in recent years. This volume is based on a meeting held in 2002 at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which aimed to lay the astrophysical groundwork for locating habitable places in the Universe. Written by leading scientists in the field, it covers a range of topics relevant to the search for life in the Universe, including: cosmology and its implications for the emergence of life, the habitable zone in the Milky Way Galaxy, the formation of stars and planets, the study of interstellar and interplanetary matter, searches for extrasolar planets, the synthesis of organic material in space, and spectroscopic signatures that could be used to detect life. This is an invaluable resource for both professional researchers and graduate students.

  • Author : David Aubin
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2010-01-26
  • ISBN : 082239250X
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book The Heavens on Earth written by David Aubin and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heavens on Earth explores the place of the observatory in nineteenth-century science and culture. Astronomy was a core pursuit for observatories, but usually not the only one. It belonged to a larger group of “observatory sciences” that also included geodesy, meteorology, geomagnetism, and even parts of physics and statistics. These pursuits coexisted in the nineteenth-century observatory; this collection surveys them as a coherent whole. Broadening the focus beyond the solitary astronomer at his telescope, it illuminates the observatory’s importance to technological, military, political, and colonial undertakings, as well as in advancing and popularizing the mathematical, physical, and cosmological sciences. The contributors examine “observatory techniques” developed and used not only in connection with observatories but also by instrument makers in their workshops, navy officers on ships, civil engineers in the field, and many others. These techniques included the calibration and coordination of precision instruments for making observations and taking measurements; methods of data acquisition and tabulation; and the production of maps, drawings, and photographs, as well as numerical, textual, and visual representations of the heavens and the earth. They also encompassed the social management of personnel within observatories, the coordination of international scientific collaborations, and interactions with dignitaries and the public. The state observatory occupied a particularly privileged place in the life of the city. With their imposing architecture and ancient traditions, state observatories served representative purposes for their patrons, whether as symbols of a monarch’s enlightened power, a nation’s industrial and scientific excellence, or republican progressive values. Focusing on observatory techniques in settings from Berlin, London, Paris, and Rome to Australia, Russia, Thailand, and the United States, The Heavens on Earth is a major contribution to the history of science.
