Book The Scramjet Engine

Download or read book The Scramjet Engine written by Corin Segal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renewed interest in high-speed propulsion has led to increased activity in the development of the supersonic combustion ramjet engine for hypersonic flight applications. In the hypersonic regime the scramjet engine's specific thrust exceeds that of other propulsion systems. This book, written by a leading researcher, describes the processes and characteristics of the scramjet engine in a unified manner, reviewing both theoretical and experimental research. The focus is on the phenomena that dictate the thermo-aerodynamic processes encountered in the scramjet engine, including component analyses and flowpath considerations; fundamental theoretical topics related to internal flow with chemical reactions and non-equilibrium effects, high-temperature gas dynamics, and hypersonic effects are included. Cycle and component analyses are further described, followed by flowpath examination. Finally, the book reviews experimental and theoretical capabilities and describes ground testing facilities and computational fluid dynamics facilities developed for the study of time-accurate, high-temperature aerodynamics.

Book Theoretical and Experimental Performance of a Solid Fuel Ramjet Combustion Cycle for Hypersonic Flight Conditions

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Performance of a Solid Fuel Ramjet Combustion Cycle for Hypersonic Flight Conditions written by P. J. M. Elands and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research program has been carried out to validate a numerical simulation of the flow and combustion process in the combustion chamber of a solid fuel ramjet with experimental results. Operating conditions were chosen to represent a sustained missile flight at Mach 4 at an altitude of 13 km. Experimental data were obtained by burning cylindrical fuel grains made of polyethylene and hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene in a solid fuel ramjet using a connected pipe facility. For numerical simulation a computer code was developed, describing rotational symmetric steady-state turbulent reacting flows through channels with and without a sudden expansion. Calculations were carried out using polyethylene as a fuel. For the validation emphasis was laid on the regression rate. The results show that the computer code predicts the mean regression rate with reasonable accuracy. The value for the effective heat of gasification is found to be very important. The experiments and the calculations carried out show the feasibility to apply a solid fuel ramjet for sustained hypersonic flight at these conditions.

Book Unsteady Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Unsteady Supersonic Combustion written by Mingbo Sun and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the unsteady phenomena needed to understand supersonic combustion. Following an initial chapter that introduces readers to the basic concepts in and classical studies on unsteady supersonic combustion, the book highlights recent studies on unsteady phenomena, which offer insights on e.g. interactions between acoustic waves and flames, flow dominating instability, ignition instability, flame flashback, and near-blowout-limit combustion. In turn, the book discusses in detail the fundamental mechanisms of these phenomena, and puts forward practical suggestions for future scramjet design.

Book A Parametric Study and Survey of the Theoretical Performance of the Subsonic Combustion Ramjet

Download or read book A Parametric Study and Survey of the Theoretical Performance of the Subsonic Combustion Ramjet written by Benjamin Omilian and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The performance of the subsonic combustion ramjet over the range from Mach 3 to 8 is presented, showing the effects of systematic variations in component efficiencies and flight conditions. Fuels considered are hydrogen, ethylene, and pentaborane. Performance predictions in the literature are reviewed and compared, and differences discussed. The present results are included in the comparison. (Author).

Book Supersonic Combustion and Burning in Ramjet Combustors

Download or read book Supersonic Combustion and Burning in Ramjet Combustors written by Rudolph Edse and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses research results obtained on the experimental and theoretical studies of subsonic and supersonic burning in ramjet combustors during the period 1 April to 31 March 1972. During this period theoretical calculations showed that nozzle dimensions for a chemically reacting flow must be based on the shifting equilibrium sound speed. Incompatible conditions are obtained when the frozen sound speed is used. The difference in the nozzle area for the two cases is significant. Deviations of the observed wave speed and pressure of detonations in hydrogen-oxygen and hydrogen-nitric oxide mixtures initially at high pressure from the theoretical values were determined to be caused apparently by turbulence in the gas flow behind the wave. Book THE UTILIZATION OF SUPERSONIC COMBUSTION RAMJET SYSTEMS AT LOW MACH NUMBERS

Download or read book THE UTILIZATION OF SUPERSONIC COMBUSTION RAMJET SYSTEMS AT LOW MACH NUMBERS written by and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low-speed performance of the supersonic combustion ramjet engine is investigated. A discussion of the fundamental problems of low-speed operation is followed by a review of techniques of converting from supersonic to subsonic combustion. A new engine concept, the 'dual-mode' engine, is discussed and its potential performance outlined.

Book Constant Velocity Combustion Scramjet Analysis

Download or read book Constant Velocity Combustion Scramjet Analysis written by Lakshmi Srikanth Tiruveedula and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supersonic combustion ramjet or scramjet, is the most suitable engine cycle for sustained hypersonic flight in the atmosphere. The present work deals with the performance of a scramjet engine by parametrically analyzing the performance of the ideal scramjet using the engine parameters: specific thrust, fuel-to-air ratio, thrust specific fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, propulsive efficiency, overall efficiency and thrust flux. The objective of the work is to determine the desirable performance terms of the ideal scramjet, by varying three different candidate fuels and three different candidate materials for the combustion chamber. The engine parameters are related by the lower heating value (hPR) of the fuel and the maximum service temperature (Tmax) of the material. This convenient mathematical equations are development for ideal scramjet performance. The knowledge offered on this work has not been achieved by using others within the scientific literature.
