Lim offers an insightful examination of the polemical debates about the doctrine of the Trinity in seventeenth-century England, showing that this philosophical and theological re-configuration significantly impacted the politics of religion in the early modern period. Through analysis of these heated polemics, Lim shows how Trinitarian God-Talk became untenable in many ecclesiastical and philosophical circles, which led to the emergence of Unitarianism. He also demonstrates that those who continued to embrace Trinitarian doctrine articulated their piety and theological perspectives in an increasingly secularized culture of discourse. Drawing on both unexplored manuscripts and well-known treatises of Continental and English provenance, he unearths the complex layers of the polemic: from biblical exegesis to reception history of patristic authorities, from popular religious radicalism during the Civil War to Puritan spirituality, from Continental Socinians to English anti-trinitarians who avowed their relative independent theological identity, from the notion of the Platonic captivity of primitive Christianity to that of Plato as "Moses Atticus." Among this book's surprising conclusions are the findings that Anti-Trinitarian sentiment arose from a Puritan ambience, in which Biblical literalism overcame rationalistic presuppositions, and that theology and philosophy were not as unconnected during this period as previously thought. Mystery Unveiled will fill a significant lacuna in early modern English intellectual history.

In this book Dmitri Levitin examines English attitudes to ancient philosophy in unprecedented depth, demonstrating the centrality of engagement with the history of philosophy to almost all educated persons, whether scholars, clerics, or philosophers themselves, and aligning English intellectual culture closely to that of continental Europe. Drawing on a vast array of sources, Levitin challenges the assumption that interest in ancient ideas was limited to out-of-date 'ancients' or was in some sense 'pre-enlightened'; indeed, much of the intellectual justification for the new philosophy came from re-writing its history. At the same time, the deep investment of English scholars in pioneering forms of late humanist erudition led them to develop some of the most innovative narratives of ancient philosophy in early modern Europe.

Book excerpt: This is an unedited reprint of a collection of tracts about the doctrine of the Trinity published by Thomas Firmin (1632-97) in 1691. It was a major shot in a war of words among Anglicans about the doctrine of the Trinity from about 1687-98. (For an overview of this, see Dixon's Nice and Hot Disputes.) The first part contains some writings from Firmin's long-departed friend John Bidle (Biddle) (1615-62) - the first prominent English unitarian. The second contains seven controversial, anonymous writings, about half of which are thought to be by Firmin's friend, the Reverend Stephen Nye (1648-1719). Some central points: the traditional, Athansian doctrine of the Trinity is inconsistent with itself, and with the Bible. Further, several then-recent traditionalist attempts to spell out what the Trinity doctrine amounts to are criticized. These tracts include the second, revised edition of A Brief History of the Unitarians, Called also Socinians. In Four Letters to a Friend.
