With pupils who are just beginning the use of a text-book the teacher will do well to study each lesson from the text-book in this way instead of assigning lessons to be learned by them. It is prepared for mere children, and is intended strictly as a First book of Geography. Among all those now in use, many of which are doubtless excellent, it is believed there are none, the style and arrangement of which, are well suited to beginners. The Author has attempted to furnish such a book as appears to be needed; one that maybe used for initiation, and that may properly be put into the hands of the pupil before any other. When he has been through this, he will be prepared for some more extensive system of Geography. This book may also be used to advantage, as an Introduction to the "First Book of History." It will be observed that the work contains only American Geography. It was thought that the Geography of our own Hemisphere, was not only the most important part of the study, but that it was the most convenient and proper, to be used for the purpose of introducing the pupil to a first acquaintance with the subject, generally. The greatest difficulty in teaching Geography, is at the beginning. The design of this book is, to remove this difficulty, and the study of our own Geography is used to secure this end. The pupil once introduced, will easily find books to aid his farther progress. If we might be permitted to name a work to follow this, we would recommend the "Malte Brun School Geography," as being arranged on a similar plan, and to which, we should regard the present volume a suitable introduction. With a view to enliven the subject as much as possible, the Author has introduced a variety of engravings, and has embraced the descriptions in a series of imaginary travels, which the pupil is supposed to perform in company with the Author. Experience has shown that this method excites the interest of the pupil, perhaps, beyond any other. The work contains several neatly engraved maps, and they are so arranged, that the questions face the maps to which they refer. The convenience of this plan, will be seen at once by Teachers. There is another topic of more importance than any we have yet noticed, and which it is proper to mention here. Several works have recently appeared on Geography, which are constructed wholly or in part, on the inductive plan. This is unquestionably the only true method of teaching Geography. It Should recognize the fact that the relation of the part to the whole is an elementary principle. When the earth is first considered part by part, the parts are with great difficulty, if ever, put into a harmonious whole. While it is true that the immense Size of the earth, its movements, and their relation to' other phenomena, are facts pertaining to a phase of geography which cannot be fully grasped by. Immature minds, yet distinct ideas of the elements which together form the world may be early imparted. It is impossible for children to study their own country intelligently as a whole, or in sections, Without this preparatory world study.
