Book Syllables of Recorded Time

Download or read book Syllables of Recorded Time written by Lyn Harrington and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1981-08-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syllables of Recorded Time is a lively look at the development over the last six decades of a national authors’ association, with all its problems and foibles. Personalities such as Bliss Carman, Nellie McClung, Stephen Leacock, B.K. Sandwell, W.A. Deacon, Mazo de la Roche, John Murray Gibbon, Helen Chreighton, Watson Kirkconnell, Charles G.D. Roberts and Duncan Campbell Scott figure prominently in the amusing anecdotes of the early days, and Hugh MacLennan, Pierre Berton, Dorothy Livesay and Arthur Hailey in the later years. Syllables of Recorded Time highlights the discussions and legalities regarding issues of copyright, contracts, women’s role, cultural domination by Britain and the U.S.A., government funding and markets for writers. It tells why there was a spinoff of specialized interests including the Canadian Writers’ Foundation, the League of Poets, the Governor General’s Awards, the Canadian Copyright Institute, the Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers and the Writers’ Union of Canada. Harrington vividly portrays all facets of the organization in this valuable resource book.

Book Fifty Years of the Research and theory of R s Lazarus

Download or read book Fifty Years of the Research and theory of R s Lazarus written by Richard S. Lazarus and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of the articles written by the author throughout his extensive career, this book achieves three goals. First, it reprints selected research and theory papers on stress and coping from the 1950s to the present produced by Lazarus under five rubrics: his dissertation; perennial epistemological issues including the revolt of the 1940s and 1950s; his transition from laboratory to field research; the clinical applications of stress and coping; and expanding stress to the emotions. Second, it provides a running commentary on the origination of the issues discussed, what was occurring in psychology when the work was done, and where the work led in the present. Third, it integrates various themes about which psychologists debate vociferously, often without recognizing the intellectual bases of these differences.

Karr describes the relationships between authors, literary agents, and publishers in Toronto, London, New York, and other centres; examines the relationship between authors and the movie industry; and discusses the reception of fiction by critics and readers. This is the first Canadian study to use fan mail to highlight readers' interactions with author and text. Karr places the authors' careers in an international setting and shows how, despite living a considerable distance from the leading cultural production centres of New York and London, they became internationally recognized and read.

Book The Tragedy of Reason

Download or read book The Tragedy of Reason written by David Roochnik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical conception of reason (or logos) has been repeatedly attacked in the modern era. Its enemies range from Descartes, who complains that logos is not sufficiently useful or precise, to Derrida who hopes to liberate Western thought from its bondage to "logocentrism." At least since the time of Nietzsche, Plato has been damned as the chief architect of the classical conception of logos. He is accused of overvaluing reason and thereby devaluing the other, more human aspects of life. As it was originally formulated in Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy, Plato has been taken to be the arch-enemy of tragedy, which for Nietzsche was the most life-affirming of all the art forms of Greek culture. Originally published in 1990, The Tragedy of Reason defends Plato against his accusers. Employing a mode of exposition which exhibits Plato’s position, Roochnik presents the Platonic conception of logos in confrontation with texts by Homer, Hesiod, Heraclitus, Aristotle, Descartes, Porty, and Derrida. In clear language, unencumbered by technical terminology, Roochnik shows that Platonic conception of logos is keenly aware of the strength of its opponents. The result is a presentation of Plato as a "tragic philosopher" whose conception of logos is characterized by an affirmation of its own limits as well as its goodness.
