Book A Stagnating Metropolis

Download or read book A Stagnating Metropolis written by Johan Soderberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses a peculiar phase in the history of Stockholm which has not previously been systematically investigated. Between 1750 and 1850 the Swedish capital experienced long-term stagnation, characterized by de-industrialization and slow population growth. In this study various aspects of the economic and social history of the period are examined in detail, including the decline of manufacturing, the causes of the extremely high rates of mortality and extra-marital fertility, and the distribution of economic resources. Social and spatial patterns of poverty are described and the trends and fluctuations in prices and real wages charted and compared with other European towns and cities.

Book Structure and Change in the Space Economy

Download or read book Structure and Change in the Space Economy written by T.R. Lakshmanan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the space economy demands a keen curiosity supported by a rigorous methodology and a strong sense of the problems at hand. However, the blend of these two capabilities is more unusual than one would be inclined to believe. Professor Martin Beckmann is one of those exceptional scholars whose original theoretical insights and elegant contributions have been crucial to our understanding of the complex mechanism of the space economy. Drawing on the basic social science theory, he has developed a significant body of knowledge which represents fundamental contributions to the fields of location theory, transportation economics, mathematical economics and organizational theory. For over four decades, Martin Beckmann's creativity, originality and excellence in the broad sense of scientific discovery made him play a pivotal and leading role in regional science. A creative artist, Martin Beckmann was never a loner: he not only presented his views in that spare and elegant style we know him by, but also listened. One may say that on these intellectual voyages in the space economy, Martin Beckmann was both a teacher and a pupil. Accompanying him on such a discovery trip was a memorable experience: the final destination was not always defined, but the journey was ever exciting and full of surprises. Some of the great many fellow travellers of Martin Beckmann offer a tribute to a great scientist and professional colleague through this Festschrift.

Book The Swedish Experiment

Download or read book The Swedish Experiment written by Assar Lindbeck and published by Center for Business and Policy Studies. This book was released on 1997 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Swedish Experiment Assar Lindbeck characterizes the economic and social system in Sweden in terms of a number of institutional features by which Sweden has differed from most other developed countries. They refer mainly to the division of responsibilities between the private and the government sector, in particular with respect to economic security, employment, income distribution, consumption and investment. The book concludes by asking whether the Swedish experiment is gradually unwinding and, if so, why. The Swedish Experiment is written in a nontechnical fashion and should be of great interest not only to professional economists, but also to students of economics and other social sciences as well as to general readers.

Book The Structure of Production

Download or read book The Structure of Production written by Mark Skousen and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, the U. S. government adopted a new quarterly statistic called gross output (GO), the most significance advance in national income accounting since gross domestic product (GDP) was developed in the 1940s. The announcement came as a triumph for Mark Skousen, who advocated GO nearly 25 years ago as an essential macroeconomic tool and a better way to measure the economy and the business cycle. Now it has become an official statistic issued quarterly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis at the U. S. Department of Commerce. In this new revised edition of Structure of Production, Skousen shows why GO is a more accurate and comprehensive measure of the economy because it includes business-to-business transactions that move the supply chain along to final use. (GDP measures the value of finished goods and services only, and omits B-to-B activity.) GO is an attempt to measure spending at all stages of production. Using GO, Skousen demonstrates that the supply-side of the business spending is far more important than consumer spending, is more consistent with economic growth theory, and a better measure of the business cycle.

Book An Economic History of Sweden

Download or read book An Economic History of Sweden written by Eli Filip Heckscher and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1954 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

Book The Economic Development of Sweden Since 1870

Download or read book The Economic Development of Sweden Since 1870 written by Lars Jonung and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1870 to 1970 period, Sweden experimented with a number of social policy measures, including far-reaching egalitarian policies and an extensive welfare system, yet they still enjoyed one of the most rapid growth rates in the world economy. These policy experiments in large part marked the beginnings of the academic field of economic history, nurtured most carefully by Eli F. Heckscher. This collection of reprinted articles by various authors reflects upon Sweden's economic maturity from a poor preindustrial nation to a wealthy European model economy. The development of Sweden's banking system plays prominently in the discussion, as does the importance of exports and transportion lines to this geographically small country with a long coastline. But perhaps the most attention goes to how the Swedish economy thrived while steadfastly emphasizing their public welfare system. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Economic Structure and Performance

Download or read book Economic Structure and Performance written by Hollis B. Chenery and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Structure and Performance: Essays in Honor of Hollis B. Chenery briefly reviews the work of Hollis Chenery in the field of economics. This book discusses the underlying themes in Chenery's work, including structure, strategy, adjustment, and models. Organized into four parts encompassing 26 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the patterns of structural change and their relation to growth. This text then examines the objectives, measures, and implementation of policy, as well as administrative capabilities and cultural characteristics. Other chapters compare Chenery's econometric analysis of development patterns with the historical analyses and suggest that the two approaches complement each other. This book discusses as well the persistence of disequilibrium in segments of the economy. The final chapter deals with simple criteria for detecting critical interdependencies and a formula for measuring their welfare consequences. This book is a valuable resource for economists, industrialists, foreign capitalists, and social scientists.

Book Economics in Sweden

Download or read book Economics in Sweden written by Lars Engwall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics in Sweden contains the results of one of the most comprehensive attempts to evaluate research in economics ever undertaken. A team of Swedish and international researchers, including Avinash K. Dixit, Seppo Honkapohja and Robert M. Slow, examined the structure of economics in Sweden and its results. They identified postgraduate education as a key area, and their findings will be of particular relevence at a time when many countries are restructuring their graduate education programme.
