Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Highland Regiments It is a perplexing thing when the making of history is often terrible, sometimes tragic, but hardly ever tedious, that the reading of history should be considered uniformly grey. In compiling the present book I shrink from the word 'History' - I altered it to 'Story.' It is the same thing, but it does not sound so depressing. The Story of the Highland Regiments is not merely a narrative of regimental gallantry - it is also the story of our Empire for nearly two hundred years, the story of strange lands and peoples, of heroism and endurance, of the open sea and the frontier. It is even more than that - it is the story of self-sacrifice, of courage, of patriotism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Echoes of Success Identity and the Highland Regiments

Download or read book Echoes of Success Identity and the Highland Regiments written by Ian Stuart Kelly and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Echoes of Success, Ian Stuart Kelly uses new information about late Victorian Scottish Highland battalions to provide new insights into how groups identify themselves, and pass that sense on to successive generations of soldiers. Kelly applies concepts from organisational theory (the study of how organisations function) to demonstrate how soldiers’ experiences create a ‘blueprint’ of expected behaviours and thought patterns that contribute to their battalion’s continued success. This model manages the interplay between public perception and actual life experiences more effectively than current approaches to understanding identity. Also, Kelly’s primary research offers a more certain description of soldiers’ life, faith, education, and discipline than has previously been available.

Book The Story of the Highland Regiments

Download or read book The Story of the Highland Regiments written by Frederick Watson and published by . This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highland Regiments have always enjoyed a worldwidepopularity quite apart from the quality of theirachievements. This popularity is due to the appeal ofimagination and romance. The spectacle of a Highlandregiment, its pipes playing, and the kilts swinging file byfile, recalls the old days when the clans rose for theStuarts. The Highland dress is not only linked for alltime with Lucknow, Balaclava, and Quatre Bras, but, stepping farther backward, with Culloden, Killiecrankie, and Glencoe. People unacquainted with uniforms find adifficulty in recognising certain English line regimentswhose records are the glory of our military history. Butthe Highlander, beyond his distinctive regiment, carriesin the memories aroused a passport to popular favou

Book excerpt: 'Highlanders have long been among the most feared soldiers in the world and Tim Newark's book admirably tells their stirring tale. A great read!' Bernard Cornwell On the fields of Waterloo, the deserts of Sudan, the Plains of Abraham and the mountains of Dargai, the trenches of Flanders and the jungles of Burma - the great Highland regiments made their mark. The brave kilted troops with their pipes and drums were legendary, whether leading the charge into the thick of battle or standing fast, the last to leave or fall, fighting against the odds. Acclaimed historian Tim Newark tells the story of the Highlanders through the words of the soldiers themselves, from diaries, letters and journals uncovered from archives in Scotland and around the world. At the Battle of Quebec in 1759, only a few years after their defeat at Culloden, the 78th Highlanders faced down the French guns and turned the battle. At Waterloo, Highlanders memorably fought alongside the Scots Greys against Napoleon's feared Old Guard. In the Crimea, the thin red line stood firm against the charging Russian Hussars and saved the day at Balaclava. Yet the story is also one of betrayal. At Quebec, General Wolfe remarked that, despite the Highlanders' courage, it was 'no great mischief if they fall'. At Dunkirk in May 1940, the 51st Regiment was left to defend the SOE evacuation at St Valery; though following D-Day the Highlanders were at the forefront of the fighting through France. It is all history: over the last decade the historic regiments have been dismantled, despite widespread protest. Praise for The Mafia at War: An engrossing history that reads like a thriller. 'The Godfather' meets 'Band of Brothers'. Andrew Roberts An engrossing account that has the read-on factor of the finest thriller. James Holland Newark tells an extraordinary tale with pace and conviction, and impressively unravels what really happened from the pervasive myths. History Today

Download or read book Mutiny written by John Prebble and published by Harvill Secker. This book was released on 1975 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Highland soldiers were Britain's earliest colonial levies, first raised to police their own hills, then expended in imperial wars. The Gaelic people of the 18th century, three percent only of the population, nonetheless supplied the Crown with sixty-five regiments, as well as independent companies, militia and volunteers. Contrary to romantic belief, the Highlander was rarely a willing soldier, his songs lament the day he put on a red coat. He was often recruited by threat, sold by the chiefs he trusted. Promises made to him were cynically broken, his pride was outraged by the lash, by contempt for his fierce attachment to his language and dress. The family he hoped to protect by enlistment was frequently evicted in his absence and replaced by sheep. Mutinies were thus inevitable. This is the first account of them, much of it in the words of the soldiers and their officers. It begins with the noble revolt of the Black Watch at Finchley in 1743 and ends with the mutiny of starving Fencibles on Glasgow Green in 1804. It tells how the Seaforths stood in defiance on Arthur's Seat for three days until their demands were met, how Atholl Highlanders held Portsmouth for a week until they received their promised discharge. Angered by brutal floggings, Argyll Fencibles closed Edinburgh Castle and threatened the security of Scotland. Refusing to march into England against the terms of their enlistment, Strathspey men defied their officers from the walls of Linlithgow Palace, and soldiers of the Black Watch and Fraser's fought a bloody battle in Leith, dying by musket and bayonet rather than abandon their native dress. It is a subject that has been curiously ignored by historians. John Preeble properly sees it as essential to an understanding of the destruction of the Highland clans, the story of which he began in Culloden, continued in The Highland Clearances and Glencoe, and now completes in this book."--Book jacket.
