The young couple travels from Holland to the New World almost immediately after their wedding. Penelope is shipwrecked, attacked by Indians, made a widow, left for dead, and compelled to make her own way in America in one of the most unique stories ever told. She meets Richard Stout, who is almost twice her age, and he becomes more than just her rescuer. They, along with other new settlers, are forced to battle a corrupt government and hostile enemies, all the while trying to hold on to what they have built.

Book excerpt: "Indians found the Dutch couple on the beach...she revived and crawled into a hollow tree...Thomas Hale Streets questioned the time sequence." -Daily Register, May 12, 1964 "No one knows how Stout went from Lenape captive to New Amsterdam bride....There is a Facebook community titled 'Penelope Stout Descendants' that has 1,600 members." -Asbury Park Press, November 20, 2017 Did famous Dutch colonial "Indian War" survivor Penelope Stout live to age 110 and also have over 500 descendants prior to her death, or was there a time sequence error in historical records? Historical researcher Dr. Thomas Hale Streets (1847-1925) sheds new light on the truth about Penelope Stout in his short 1897 book titled "The Story of Penelope Stout." Penelope Van Princis Kent Stout (1622 - 1732) of Amsterdam, Netherlands. She was the first female white settler of Monmouth County, New Jersey. According to History of the Baptists she lived to the age of 110. When she arrived, via shipwreck, in America she and her husband were abandoned on shore by the other passengers and were attacked by a hostile tribe inhabiting the region. In introducing his book, Streets writes: "The story of Penelope Stout is one of those thrilling tales of capture and rescue from the Indians--so often associated with the history of the early settlements of our country--which reads more like fiction than reality, and which has been preserved in the memory of her numerous offspring, wherever found, for more than two hundred and fifty years." About the author: Thomas Hale Streets (November 20, 1847 - March 3, 1925) was an American naturalist. He served as a surgeon in the U.S. Navy from 1872 and retired in 1909 as the Director of the Navy Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penelope Scambly Schott has researched facts and woven them into this poem. She cites her sources and points out fact from fiction. The poems take the reader directly into the mind and heart of a strong woman, who is extraordinary partly because she thinks she is ordinary. This brilliant tour-de-force narrates the life of a woman shipwrecked in the 1640s on the shores of modern-day New Jersey, axed in the belly, half-scalped and left for dead by the Lenape Indians, then nursed back to health by them and taken into the tribe. And that’s only the beginning. Penelope Scambly Schott has carefully researched the facts and woven them into a poetic page-turner. She cites her sources, provides a glossary and, best of all, indicates what is fact and what is fiction. Her technique is well chosen: the interior monologues, mostly of the heroine, Penelope Kent van Princis Stout, and, in a few poems, those of her namesake, the author. A more distant Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, is also invoked. The poems take us directly into the mind and heart of a strong woman, who is extraordinary partly because she thinks she is ordinary. With craftsmanship and feeling, Schott has limned unforgettable characters whose lives transcend the mostly ignoble history of settler-Native American relations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stout Family of Delaware: With the Story of Penelope Stout "The Story of Penelope Stout" is a fit introduction to any history of the Stout family; in fact, it would not be complete without it. This story was published privately several years ago as a brochure, when I first began the study of the Stout Family of Delaware, and became interested in its antecedents. It is republished here with additions and alterations. I have been at considerable pains in verifying the legend by official contemporary documents and by local history, and find that it agrees more with facts than is usually the case with family traditions. The Stout Family of Delaware is properly one of the series of "Allied Families," inasmuch as most of those in Delaware, of recent years, were descendants of Mary Griffin.
