In the present issue, it has been revised and somewhat extended. In preparing it, I consulted practically all the available works which I considered likely to throw any light on the subject; but while having thus taken pains to be accurate and reliable, I have not thought it desirable, in view of the class of readers I have primarily in view, to give references, except in a few instances. Of the several authors to whom I have been indebted, I must mention the Very Rev. Canon O'Hanlon, whose life of the Saint, and especially the accompanying notes and references, I have found of much value, and have freely used. I have also, in the chapter pertaining to the See of Inis Cathaigh, drawn considerably on the work of the Very Rev. Dr. Malone, P.P., V.G., Kilrush.
