Book The Parliamentary Diary of Sir Richard Cocks 1698 1702

Download or read book The Parliamentary Diary of Sir Richard Cocks 1698 1702 written by Sir Richard Cocks and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Richard Cocks, a Gloucestershire country gentleman, was a new and enthusiastic member of the Parliament which began in 1698. His diary is the only substantial parliamentary diary yet to have been discovered between Narcissus Luttrell and Anchitell Grey's reports of debates in the early 1690s and Sir Edward Knatchbull's in the 1720s. It covers the four parliamentary sessions of 1698-1702, in which vital questions of state were decided and significant developments took place in the evolution of English party politics. Cocks showed keen appreciation of the drama and significance of the events of which he was a witness and his diary offers a unique insight into events in the Commons. Unlike other diarists, he also showed a keen interest in the details of parliamentary procedure. This important journal, previously unpublished, has now been meticulously edited by D. W. Hayton. Fully annotated, with a detailed introduction and appendices, it is a major source for the political and parliamentary history of the period.

Some of the pivotal moments in the Garden of England's history are recalled, including invasions from Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans. It has seen the Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt, the Swing Riots and, more recently, audacious escapades by suffragettes in the battle for Votes for Women. The resilient people of Kent have taken it all in their stride and this story encompasses how they lived, worked and played through hundreds of years of colourful history.

That was the largest collection of new Holmes stories ever assembled, and originally planned to be a one-time event. But readers wanted more, and the contributors had more stories from Watson's Tin Dispatch Box, so the fun continued. Now, with the release of Parts XLIII, XLIV, and XLV, the series has grown to over 900 new Holmes adventures by over 200 contributors from around with world. Since the beginning, all contributor royalties go to the Undershaw school for special needs children, at one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's former homes, and to date the project has raised over $120,000 for the school. As has become the tradition, this new collection of 63 adventures features Holmes and Watson carrying out their masterful investigations from Holmes's life before meeting Watson, to the early days of their friendship in Baker Street, all the way to World War I. Along the way, they are involved in some fascinating mysteries that progress along completely unexpected lines. Join us as we return to Baker Street and discover more authentic adventures of Sherlock Holmes, described by the estimable Dr. Watson as "the best and wisest . . . whom I have ever known."

Book excerpt: One powerful king. Two tragic queens. In the court of Henry VIII, it was dangerous for a woman to catch the king’s eye. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were cousins. Both were beautiful women, though very different in temperament. They each learned that Henry’s passion was all-consuming–and fickle. Sophisticated Anne Boleyn, raised in the decadent court of France, was in love with another man when King Henry claimed her as his own. Being his mistress gave her a position of power; being his queen put her life in jeopardy. Her younger cousin, Catherine Howard, was only fifteen when she was swept into the circle of King Henry. Her innocence attracted him, but a past mistake was destined to haunt her. Painted in the rich colors of Tudor England, Murder Most Royal is a page-turning journey into the lives of two of the wives of the tempestuous Henry VIII.
