Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Smith and his family have traveled from their home in South Scalia to seek medical care for his sister. It's supposed to make everything better. What they discover is that their new home in North Scalia holds danger and the deepest kind of intolerance. It starts when Thomas is only seven. His younger sister, Grace, gets a simple cough. In impoverished South Scalia, advanced medical care is scarce, and Grace's cough soon turns into a deadly infection. There is no help for her in South Scalia. Grace's only hope lies across the desert in prosperous North Scalia. Thomas's parents know that they have to do everything they can for their daughter. Surely the inhabitants of North Scalia will not deny a four-year-old girl medical care. With the help of their beloved donkey, Grandma Jan, the Smiths set off across the desert. Their church and community have given all they can to help the Smiths on their quest. Will it be enough? The Smith family's experiences have eerie similarities to the current political climate in the United States. Daniel Washle's cautionary fable reveals the ugly underside of a society that claims to be free and just.

Book Donkeys in the Biblical World

Download or read book Donkeys in the Biblical World written by Kenneth C. Way and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Kenneth Way explores the role of donkeys in the symbolism and ceremonies of the biblical world. His study stands alone in providing a comprehensive examination of donkeys in ancient Near Eastern texts, the archaeological record, and the Hebrew Bible. Way demonstrates that donkeys held a distinct status in the beliefs and rituals of the ancient Near East and especially Canaan-Israel. The focus on ceremony and symbol encompasses social and religious thoughts and practices that are reflected in ancient texts and material culture relating to the donkey. Ceremonial considerations include matters of sacrifice, treaty ratification, consumption, death, burial, “scapegoat” rituals, and foundation deposits; symbolic considerations include matters of characterization, association, function, behavior, and iconographic depiction. However, the distinction between ceremony and symbol is not strict. In many cases, these two categories are symbiotic. The need for this study on donkeys is very apparent in the disciplines that study the biblical world. There is not a single monograph or article that treats this subject comprehensively. Philologists have discussed the meaning of the Amorite phrase “to kill a jackass,” and archaeologists have discussed the phenomenon of equid burials. But until now, neither philologists nor archaeologists have attempted to pull together all the ceremonial and symbolic data on donkeys from burials, ancient Near Eastern texts, and the Hebrew Bible. Way’s study fills this void.

"A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor." —John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog When Christopher McDougall decided to adopt a donkey in dire straits, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. But with the help of his neighbors, Chris came up with a crazy idea. Burro racing, a unique type of competition in which humans and donkeys run side by side over mountains and through streams, would be exactly the challenge Sherman and Chris needed. In the course of Sherman’s training, Chris would enlist Amish running clubs, high-spirited goats, the service animal community, and two Sarah Palin–loving long-distance female truckers. Sherman’s heartwarming story of overcoming all odds to run one of the most unbelievable races in America shows the healing power of movement and the strength of the human-animal connection. Download or read book The Coming Prince written by Robert Anderson and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was one of the most popular lay preachers and Christian apologists of his day: Sir Robert Anderson devoutly believed that the Bible was the inerrant word of God, and in this popular 1881 book-a companion to his Daniel in the Critics' Den-he mounts a defense of the prophetic Old Testament Book of Daniel, an early example of apocalyptic philosophy in Christianity. Students of the Bible will appreciate this historically valuable attempt to set straight the many controversies surrounding Daniel regarding its authorship and even the date of its writing. And anyone interested in the apocalyptic fervor of modern-day fundamentalist Christianity will find this an instructive and enlightening read. While at Scotland Yard, Irish police official and religious scholar SIR ROBERT ANDERSON (1841-1918) helped investigate the Jack the Ripper murders, but he is best remembered for his works of Bible study, including Forgotten Truths and The Silence of God.
