Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Abraham Lincoln's Assassination One hundred and twenty-one years ago, according to the vague records of the event, Abraham Lincoln was born. A child of the southern wilderness, his character was moulded and wrought in an environment of loneliness, sorrow and privation. His heart bled from early youth until under the weeping skies of a sad April morning in 1865, it was drained of its last crimson drop. The joys of the world never knew him, to happiness he was a stranger, life's burdens clung to him with ever-increasing weight until death struck them from his tired shoulders. The great duties that came to him were duties of pain and sorrow; the triumphs he won were triumphs that crushed his soul with grief. Download or read book The Suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln Classic Reprint written by Burke McCarty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Suppressed Truth About the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln In all the history of the political assassination plots by the enemies of freedom, which for cold cal culation, malicious methods, relentless pursuit, subtle cunning, and cowardly execution, nothing can exceed the cruel murder of this greatest of all Americans, for President Lincoln was the living, breathing type in which was fulfilled the triumph of the New Con cept of Popular Government, the central postulate of which is, the consent of the governed. It was the life of Abraham Lincoln which placed this form of government forever outside an experiment where its enemies persisted in endeavoring to keep it. That a barefoot, nameless boy on poverty's path could, by his own efforts, reach the highest office in the gift of the American people, gave the lie to the Divine Right croakers, and merited their most unceasing hatred. Barring the martyrdoms of Jesus Christ and Joan D' Arc, the methods used in Abraham Lincoln's assassination will stand pre-eminent in point of malice and cruelty, and strange as it may seem, the same diabolical cunning which nerved the hand of the assassin has pursued Lincoln beyond the grave, and has been largely successful in hiding from the public all details of his physical destruction, a crime, in the eyes of the writer, which almost outstrips the first, for by this conspiracy of silence on his death, the youth of America are being deprived of the knowl edge of the details of the greatest tragedy in their country's history. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unwritten History of the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln And here Mr. Smoot told the following interest ing narrative. Which explains many things hereto fore garbed in impenetrable mystery, and which, if known in the beginning, would have insured the hanging of John H. Surratt, who is now a resident of Baltimore, Maryland, where he has resided for many years. At the time of the breaking out of the war, began Mr. Smoot, I was engaged in farming in Charles County, Maryland, about two miles from the town of Port Tobacco, situated upon a creek of that name which is a branch of the Potomac. When the ravages of war began to take on form, farming became unprofitable, and Iwas compelled to turn my attention in other directions in order to make a living. I owned a good, large and stout boat, and fell into the way of transporting goods and passengers across the Potomac, and from that occupation to that of running the blockade was but a short step and an inviting one. I was engaged in that hazardous but fascinating undertaking in 1864. In the early part of that year I received a visit from John H. Surratt, who expressed a desire to purchase my boat. He also said that he would have use for two other good boats which, however, must be capa ble of transporting fifteen persons each rapidly and safely across the Potomac. He was noticeably eager to secure my boat, and incidentally explained his desire to have the boat by saying that it would be needed in an emergency which might arise With in avery short time. He also said that if purchased the boat would be immediately removed to a point up King's Creek, which is a branch of the Potomac about ten miles from Port Tobacco, where it was tobe held in readiness for instant use. With reference to the other two boats wanted, Surratt said they were to be stationed at certain unnamed points to meet exigencies which might arise and cause well laid plans to go astray, and which did arise. I was using my boat, and asked Surratt if he could not do without it for a while; but he declared that if he bought it he would want possession right away, as the need of the boat would be the consequence of an event of unprecedented magnitude in the his tory of the country, which would startle and astound the entire world. He did not go into any further explanation of the expected event, which I inferred was then in process of incubation, and on the verge of maturity. While Surratt's manner impressed me with the belief that something big was going to happen, I had not the remotest idea that the life of Lincoln was then any more at stake than was the life of any man who was taking active and promi nent part in the war, though I was inclined to asso ciate the coming event with a plan to abduct Lin coln, concerning which plan I had heard vague rumors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln: Flight, Pursuit, Capture, and Punishment of the Conspirators The many accounts of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln that have been written make me hesitate to offer still another; but having lived for ten years under the roof that once sheltered him in Springfield, Ill., and eight years later in the house in which he died, and having met so many persons during the past thirty-six years who either assisted in the escape of the conspirators or took some official part in their capture, trial, and punishment, rare opportunities have been offered me for gathering much true and valuable historical data on this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Abraham Lincoln: Being a Biography of His Life From His Birth to His Assassination; Also a Record of His Ancestors, and a Collection of Anecdotes Attributed to Lincoln Near the point where the states of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky meet there is a wonderful gateway in the mountains, which was discovered in 1748, by Thomas Walker, and named Cumberland Gap, in honor of the Duke of Cumberland, prime minister to King George of England. He reported that it opened into a beautiful region inhabited by Indians and wild animals. From this gap north to where the waterways which form the Ohio river break through the mountains the rugged and towering Alleghenies present an almost impassable wall between Virginia and the country west. This barrier helped to protect the inhabitants against the warrior bands of western Indians, and for a time confined the march of the settler to the Shenandoah valley. Daniel Boone had heard of the discovery of an opening in the mountains not far from his home, an I thirsted for exploration of the unknown solitudes beyond, through which only Indians roamed. He was one of the elder sons of Squire Boone, who had come from Pennsylvania and settled in Wilkes county, North Carolina, on the Yadkin river. From his youth Daniel had shown a special fondness for hunting. Before he was ten years old he could shoot a deer while it was upon the run, and while yet a lad made long trips from home alone and was never lost. He was a born woodsman. He had the cunning and eye of an Indian, and could determine the points of the compass by the stars, like a mariner. En 1769, this intrepid hunter, in company with three companions, passed through Cumberland Gap into the wild territory west of the mountains, on a hunting and exploring expedition. As they advanced, the country and attractions improved. They traveled through vast reaches of somber forest, penetrating far into the interior. Boone and one of his companions were captured by the Indians, but made their escape. When they returned to their camp, the other two men had disappeared, and were never heard of again. Boone remained so long away from home that his younger brother, accompanied by a friend, came in search of him. Instead of returning, he sent his brother back for powder and bullets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rome's Responsibility for the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln Every Patriotic lecturer should be prepared to fur nish it to auv with whom he may come in contact who may desire, or can be prevailed upon to read it. Its price puts it within the reach of all; and it should be circulated by the millions throughout the length and breadth of the land. The suggestions which I have indulged in at its close are intended to be tentative rather than arbitrary. They, of course, express my own conclusions in re gard to what will be found necessary to break, for good and all, the power of the Hierarchy. Yet, I do not de sire to be dictatorial. I simply invite for them a careful, unbiased, consideration. It will be for the American people in the exercise of their collective wisdom to determine upon the best course of action. Something must be done; and they will have to deter mine as to the best method of doing that something. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln There is no doubt that for some time prior to the assassination of Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Arnold had contemplated writing his life. Previous to that event, and while yet a member of Congress, he had commenced to write the History of Abraham Lincoln and the Overthrow of Slavery, which he completed and published in 1867. He brought to the preparation of that work the qualities of an able and conscientious historian, who wrote very largely from personal knowledge and personal observation. It is a book of real interest and exceptional historic value. Important and valuable facts are to be obtained therein which are not to be found elsewhere. This work was never entirely satisfactory to Mr. Arnold, so far as it related to Mr. Lincoln, and hence some two years since he determined to write in a stricter sense the life of Mr. Lincoln, in the light of additional material he had gathered, and disconnected with the history of the overthrow of slavery, except in so far as the subject was connected generally with the administration of Mr. Lincoln. Download or read book The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln written by Newman Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln: A Lecture States, he said of the two parties in the war, Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God. Each invokes his aid against the other. It may seem strange that any man should dare ask a just God's assistance in wringing bread from the sweat of other men's faces; but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayer of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully; for the Almighty has his own purposes. 'woe unto the world because of offences, for it must needs be that offences come; but woe unto that man by whom the offence cometh.' If we suppose American slavery to be one of those offences which He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both this terrible war, as was due to those by whom the offence came, shall we say there is any departure from the divine attributes? Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away; yet, if it be God's will that it continue until the wealth piled by bondsmen by two hundred and fifty years' unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said that The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.' These last words shall be our text. The motto for our meditations on his decease shall be furnished by the lamented President himself, in the speech which he delivered within six weeks of that event.
