Download or read book A Great and Wretched City written by Mark Jurdjevic and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many inhabitants of booming metropolises, Machiavelli alternated between love and hate for his native city. He often wrote scathing remarks about Florentine political myopia, corruption, and servitude, but also wrote about Florence with pride, patriotism, and confident hope of better times. Despite the alternating tones of sarcasm and despair he used to describe Florentine affairs, Machiavelli provided a stubbornly persistent sense that his city had all the materials and potential necessary for a wholesale, triumphant, and epochal political renewal. As he memorably put it, Florence was "truly a great and wretched city." Mark Jurdjevic focuses on the Florentine dimension of Machiavelli's political thought, revealing new aspects of his republican convictions. Through The Prince, Discourses, correspondence, and, most substantially, Florentine Histories, Jurdjevic examines Machiavelli's political career and relationships to the republic and the Medici. He shows that significant and as yet unrecognized aspects of Machiavelli's political thought were distinctly Florentine in inspiration, content, and purpose. From a new perspective and armed with new arguments, A Great and Wretched City reengages the venerable debate about Machiavelli's relationship to Renaissance republicanism. Dispelling the myth that Florentine politics offered Machiavelli only negative lessons, Jurdjevic argues that his contempt for the city's shortcomings was a direct function of his considerable estimation of its unrealized political potential.

Book The Heresy of Wu Han

    Book Details:
  • Author : Clive Ansley
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2017-01-01
  • ISBN : 1487596405
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book The Heresy of Wu Han written by Clive Ansley and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the centre of China's Cultural Revolution in its first stages stands the ambiguous figure of Wu Han. Occupying until the mid-sixties a favoured position among the intellectual elite of the People's Republic, he was the eighth-ranking figure in the Chinese Communist Party, and his Peking Opera Hai Jui's Dismissal was performed all over China. Gradually it became apparent that Wu Han was using Hai Jui to lampoon Chairman Mao Tse-tung and the core policies of the CPP. Other dissidents began to pen articles and plays on similar themes. For several years Mao chafed under these literary attacks, but in late 1965 he retaliated. A sudden, scathing attack on Wu Han and his play by an obscure newspaper editor marked the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, a cataclysm in which the Party leadership was decimated while Mao regained full supremacy. This volume presents the first translation of Wu Han's plays and helps to clarify the obscure origins of a national phenomenon that was at once intellectual, social, and political.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nish, his battered little troop and his few surviving allies are trapped on the Range of Ruin by the God-Emperor’s mighty army. Nish’s only choices are a humiliating surrender to his father or a suicidal fight to the death. Yet Nish and Maelys have to fight, and somehow they have to win, for the beautiful world of Santhenar is in peril and no one else can save it. Stilkeen, an all-powerful shape-shifting being from the Void, has come to recover the stolen chthonic fire that once bound its physical and spirit aspects together. And it wants revenge for the mortal insult that was done to it. But it may be too late for Santhenar. Chthonic fire has been released from its casket and is now eating away the Antarctic lands, as it once devoured the world of Aachan. Even if, by some miracle, Nish and Maelys can defeat the God-Emperor, there may be no way to stop chthonic fire, or Stilkeen, before the whole world is consumed. • Author : William C. Davis

  • ISBN : 1418559040
  • Pages : 553 pages

Download or read book Civil War Journal written by William C. Davis and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 1998-12-30 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the History Channel documentary series. How the Civil War sparked profound changes in slavery, immigration, women’s roles, journalism, and more. “In many arenas, the Civil War changed things both in military and civilian life,” William C. Davis observes. “The roles in society of women and minorities were altered drastically. Advancements in medicine and technology exerted a profound impact on the future. Industry burgeoned. The reporting of news entered the modern era with the photograph. Culture changed as the complexion of Americans evolved and as war’s wounds imposed lasting divisions upon our society. It ensured at once that future wars would be more terrible, and yet we would be equipped to cope with that terror to come. These are the legacies of the war covered in this volume.” Civil War Journal: The Legacies is the third volume of a three-volume treatment of the Civil War developed from the popular History Channel series Civil War Journal. Drawing on personal letters, diaries, and newspaper reports, these volumes focus on seldom-told stories of people, places, and events that bring to life the heroic intensity of the Civil War. They portray the human side of the conflict that is frequently overlooked in recounting troop movements and engagements.
