This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Interpretation of Nature These chapters, which have grown out of courses of lectures delivered both in this country and in America, are addressed to those who in their earlier outlook upon Nature felt sure of her inherent spirituality, but latterly have found difficulty in bringing this conception into line with some of the results of modern scientific thought. They contain, therefore, little for the special ist in science and philosophy, except perhaps in Chapters III. And IV., whose conclusions may suffice for the general reader. For some schools of theology, they possibly contain nothing at all. Where a writer's range of indebtedness is great, it is hardly possible to indicate it even by continuous foot notes, although that has been attempted here in some degree. In addition to the stimuli of many writings in particular the volume of Papers read before the Synthetic Society, kindly given to me by Mr. Wilfrid Ward - I would acknowledge my gratitude to him from whose New Testament I have taken his reading of a familiar verse, while to Dr. Sutherland Black I have owed much through many years. Nor can I refrain from stating what I have learned in conversation from my friend Professor John Clark of Boston University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Law in the Natural World: An Attempt to Develop, According to Scripture-Truth, the Interpretation of Nature Lest I should be thought to misconceive Prof. Drummond here, - a thing very possible to any, . And of which I would desire to remember the possi bility, -i shall let him speak for himself, and as his book is in so many hands, it will be abundantly easy to verify the quotations. At the very outset indeed he tells us in his preface expressly, that when with him the subject-matter Religion had taken on the method of the-expression of Science, and I discov ered myself, he says, enunciating Spiritual Law in the exact terms of Biology and Physics, that this was not simply a scientific coloring given to Religion, the mere freshening of the theological air with natural facts and illustrations. It was an entire re-tastz'ug of truta. My spiritual world be fore was a chaos of facts. It was the one region still unpossessed by law. I saw then why men of science distrust. Theology; why those who learn to look upon law as authority grow cold to it - it-was the great Exception. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interpretation of Nature, Vol. 1 After consideration, I determined not to try to undertake a connected argument concerning the relations of science and religion, but rather to take up certain leading questions which have at once a relation to natural history and to theol ogy. In this presentation I approach the matter altogether from my own point of view, my aim being to show the state of mind to which the student of phenomena is brought by influences which are entirely independent of theological opinions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics and Faith: A Study of Spiritual Truth in Nature The exposition of this view will not, however, be reached until an advanced stage of the discussion. Until then it will be necessary to conform the language em ployed to the prevailing idea of a distinction between matter and force. Otherwise the truths which are pre sented in the earlier papers would not be conveyed with clearness. This conception of the identity of matter with force must be regarded as fundamental in true philosophy. In every department of thought there is to be observed a reluctance to recognize the fact that we are surrounded by mysteries. While in reality all things pass the limit of our understanding, there are not wanting minds which refuse to confess that any thing does so. Instructors generally feel called upon to explain every thing. In order that they may seem to do this, they assume imaginary starting-points, which, having been devised either by themselves or by their instructors, are of course quite within their comprehension. Download or read book The Interpretation of Nature Classic Reprint written by C. Lloyd Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interpretation of Nature The Interpretation of Nature formed the subject of a course of Lowell Lectures which I had the honour of delivering in Boston last year, and of an article in the May number of the Contemporary Review. Of that article this little book is an expansion. I have introduced, especially in Sections VI. and VII., a few passages from a series of papers which appeared in the Monist in 1897 and succeeding years, and have utilised, in Section X., parts of an Address given at the International Congress of Arts and Science during the St. Louis Exposition. To those concerned I gratefully tender acknowledgment. Were so small a volume worthy of such an inscription I would dedicate it to my many American friends, to whose kindness and courtesy I owe so much.
