Book excerpt: Nineteenth Century Collections Online: European Literature, 1790-1840: The Corvey Collection includes the full-text of more than 9,500 English, French and German titles. The collection is sourced from the remarkable library of Victor Amadeus, whose Castle Corvey collection was one of the most spectacular discoveries of the late 1970s. The Corvey Collection comprises one of the most important collections of Romantic era writing in existence anywhere -- including fiction, short prose, dramatic works, poetry, and more -- with a focus on especially difficult-to-find works by lesser-known, historically neglected writers. The Corvey library was built during the last half of the 19th century by Victor and his wife Elise, both bibliophiles with varied interests. The collection thus contains everything from novels and short stories to belles lettres and more populist works, and includes many exceedingly rare works not available in any other collection from the period. These invaluable, sometimes previously unknown works are of particular interest to scholars and researchers. European Literature, 1790-1840: The Corvey Collection includes: * Novels and Gothic Novels * Short Stories * Belles-Lettres * Short Prose Forms * Dramatic Works * Poetry * Anthologies * And more Selected with the guidance of an international team of expert advisors, these primary sources are invaluable for a wide range of academic disciplines and areas of study, providing never before possible research opportunities for one of the most studied historical periods. Download or read book Enemy Number One written by Rósa Magnúsdóttir and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enemy Number One tells the story of the Soviet cultural and propaganda apparatus and its efforts to control information about the United States in the postwar landscape. Beginning with the 1945 meeting of American and Soviet troops on the Elbe, this period saw cultural relations develop in close connection to oppression as the Soviet authorities attempted to contain and appropriate images of the United States. Rósa Magnúsdóttir analyzes two official narratives about the USSR's "enemy number one" --Stalin's anti-American campaign and Khrushchev's policy of peaceful coexistence--and shows how each relied on the legacy of the wartime alliance in their approach. Stalin used the wartime experience to spread fear of a renewed war, while Khrushchev used the wartime alliance as proof that the two superpowers could work together. Drawing from extensive archival resources, Magnúsdóttir brings to life the propaganda warriors and ideological chiefs of the early Cold War period in the Soviet Union, revealing their confusion and insecurities as they attempted to navigate the uncertain world of late Stalin and early Khrushchev cultural bureaucracy. She also demonstrates how concerned Soviet authorities were by their people's presumed interest in the United States, resorting to monitoring and even repression-behavior indicative of the inferiority complex of the Soviet project as it related to the outside world.

Book excerpt: How World War II ended in Europe. What happened when the Allied advance from the west met the Soviet attack from the east as told by U. S. & Soviet veterans who were there at the Elbe River April 25, 1945. Their impressions 40 years later. Elements of the U. S. 69th Division meet forces of Gen. Zhadov's 5th Guard Army at Strehla. How two 104th "Timberwolves" captured a cousin of the famed Red Baron. How for 32 hours, between the American & Soviet lines, they were held prisoners of Totemkopf troops that were threatened with Nazi reprisal if they surrendered, & annihilation if they didn't. How they influenced the considerations of SS commanders sweating out the dilemma while Hitler decided whether to die in the Alps or Berlin. The observations of Studs Terkel & Andy Rooney who reported the historic meeting for Stars & Stripes, & Ann Stringer who filed the first news story with UPI. A moving expression of hunger for peace & the sacrifices required to attain it.
