Book excerpt: As a kingdom hangs in the balance, a librarian investigates an attempted murder in this quasi-Renaissance epic fantasy trilogy debut. The power of magic is declining in Sabria. Natural science is overtaking sorcery, placing the kingdom on the verge of a renaissance and stirring up potential for a bloody rivalry . . . Portier de Savin-Duplais once dreamed of being a great mage, but not having any talent for magic forced him to consider a different option. As a librarian at Sabria’s last Collegia Magica, he is at least able to find solace in scholarship. And now, thanks to his studies, the chance for greatness may be at hand—the King of Sabria needs Portier’s help. Someone tried to kill the king, and evidence implicates ties to magic. Portier is tasked with rooting out the mysterious enemy. But to do so, he must team up with a foolish dandy from the royal court and a brilliant, yet dangerously irascible, mage. Together the trio must navigate a treacherous landscape of conspiracy, betrayal, unholy magic, and murder if they hope to save the king and prevent an even bloodier war . . . “[A] superbly realized leadoff to Berg’s quasi-Renaissance fantasy trilogy. . . . Berg shapes the well-worn elements of epic fantasy into a lush, absorbing narrative. Even her minor characters, caught up in fiendish plots and deathly secrets, ring regally true, and Portier oscillates between rueful, reluctant, ethics-bending service and painful but necessary revelations while his old world collapses and a new one struggles to be born.” —Publishers Weekly(starred review) “An infectiously enjoyable series opener that fans of thought-provoking fantasy and intriguing mystery should appreciate.” —Library Journal “An archetypal mystery and a genuine page-turner that should please both mystery and fantasy fans.” —Booklist “Berg is a master world builder that novice fantasy authors would do well to study. Her characters are well rounded, and her created environment becomes as familiar as one’s own backyard. The fantastic elements of the story are normal—not ordinary, just a natural part of the world. Plus, the plot is nuanced and detailed. This first installment . . . is a winner.” —RT Book Reviews

Book The Spirit of Dialogue

Download or read book The Spirit of Dialogue written by Aaron T. Wolf and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over more than twenty years as a mediator, Aaron T. Wolf has learned that successful conflict resolution is shaped by complicated dynamics--from how comfortable the meeting room is to the participants' deepest senses of self. Bridging seemingly intractable issues means addressing multiple layers of needs. Wolf's approach may be surprising to Westerners who are accustomed to separating rationality from spirituality and science from religion. The Spirit of Dialogue draws lessons from a diversity of faith traditions to transform conflict, from identifying the root cause of anger to aligning with an energy beyond oneself--what Christians call grace--to the true listening practiced by Buddhist monks. Whether atheist or fundamentalist, Muslim or Jewish, Quaker or Hindu, any reader involved in difficult dialogue will find concrete steps towards a meeting of souls.

Book The Fruit of the Spirit

Download or read book The Fruit of the Spirit written by Al L. Holloway and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the schism of valuing spirituality with respect to social work practice has lessened over the years, there continues to be a gap in our understanding as to exactly what spirituality is and how one might incorporate it within social work practice? It is my contention that social workers should not only be incorporating spirituality within their practice, but also, they should become spiritual exemplars themselves. Fruit of the Spirit: A Primer for Spiritually-minded Social Workers provides some provocative notions that will spur the reader forward on his/her spiritual development. It introduces to the reader the notion of spiritual differentiation from the animalistic notion of self (which I describe as the "indifferent-heart realm"), to the development of humanistic principles ("craving-heart realm") to the ultimate experience of our purposeful journey of being fully cognizant of our spiritual selves ("pure-heart realm"). This process is exemplified with a gardening metaphor, which the reader can progress from "seeding" (awareness of one's spiritual self and the sowing of spiritual seeds), "weeding" (the structure and care of developing our spiritual selves) and the "harvesting" (the ingesting and granting of spiritual "fruits" that has been produced). Traditional knowledge of social work practice helps to elucidate the student; whereas, embracing spiritual principles is about transforming and transcending the student to higher levels. The "fruits" that are gathered are the attributes of God (e.g., love, peace, goodness, etc.). There are exercises at the end of each chapter that will assist the reader in developing his/her spirituality.

Book Decolonizing the Spirit in Education and Beyond

Download or read book Decolonizing the Spirit in Education and Beyond written by Njoki Nathani Wane and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary collection probes ways in which emerging and established scholars perceive and theorize decolonization and resistance in their own fields of work, from education to political and social studies, to psychology, medicine, and beyond. In this time of renewed global spiritual awakening, indigenous communities are revisiting ways of knowing and evoking theories of resistance informed by communal theories of solidarity. Using an intersectional lens, chapter authors present or imagine modes of solidarity, resistance, and political action that subvert colonial and neocolonial formations. Placing emphasis on the importance of theorizing the spirit, a discourse that is deeply embedded in our unique cultures and ancestries, this book is able to capture and better understand these moments and processes of spiritual emergence/re-emergence.

Wherever they went, they always held hands. Five years after his passing, Joseph continues holding Benita’s hand, supporting and guiding her through life with signs and messages from the spirit world. In her ninth grief memoir, Whispers from the Spirit World, Benita Glickman once again dazzles us with her original, beguiling poetry and her unique style of storytelling. signs of love heaven-sent magic in the making Spirit can reach out to us at any time—on a seemingly arbitrary day; soon after the death of a loved one; when we’re experiencing emotional upheaval, or at a crossroads in life; anytime we can use a little advice, or a gentle nudge. A deceased loved one reaches out for a multitude of reasons—with a heaven hello; to assure you he or she is fine; to fill you in on his or her new life, or to offer support and guidance. If you’re open to spirit, you’ll see the signs, hear the whispers, and receive the messages. Walk alongside the author as she and her circle of friends receive signs from the beyond. See if you recognize any of them as signs you’ve received. Ponder their meanings and ascertain the messages they hold. Ultimately, Benita’s message to her readers is Joseph’s message from beyond the veil. Believe in yourself and in the Universe. Only then can you follow your heart, and do what feels right to you. You may be surprised to find that what appears ordinary, may actually be sublime.

Book The Spirit of French Capitalism

Download or read book The Spirit of French Capitalism written by Charly Coleman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the economy become bound up with faith in infinite wealth creation and obsessive consumption? Drawing on the economic writings of eighteenth-century French theologians, historian Charly Coleman uncovers the surprising influence of the Catholic Church on the development of capitalism. Even during the Enlightenment, a sense of the miraculous did not wither under the cold light of calculation. Scarcity, long regarded as the inescapable fate of a fallen world, gradually gave way to a new belief in heavenly as well as worldly affluence. Animating this spiritual imperative of the French economy was a distinctly Catholic ethic that—in contrast to Weber's famous "Protestant ethic"—privileged the marvelous over the mundane, consumption over production, and the pleasures of enjoyment over the rigors of delayed gratification. By viewing money, luxury, and debt through the lens of sacramental theory, Coleman demonstrates that the modern economy casts far beyond rational action and disenchanted designs, and in ways that we have yet to apprehend fully.

Book The Self Delusion

    Book Details:
  • Author : H. Bruce May
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2013-01-31
  • ISBN : 1300693622
  • Pages : 179 pages

Download or read book The Self Delusion written by H. Bruce May and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Self Delusion falsely convinces us that we are a separate being, an individual personal entity, ego or distinct self. If we can break through your egoistic way of viewing the world and go beyond our mere intellectual understanding to bridge the gap between the ordinary distinction we make between ourselves as a "knower" of a world on the one hand and a world which is "known" on the other then we can find our way to the underlying truth that all religions hold in common. This requires that we be willing to give up our attachment to words and ideas that have less meaning in them than we think they do. Only then can we see through to the thing itself, the divine nature of the Universe, which is hidden by the Self Delusion. You can experience this for yourself simply by "seeing" through the foolish idea that you are a separate being, an individual personal entity, ego or distinct self.

Book The Holy Spirit as Space for the Living

Download or read book The Holy Spirit as Space for the Living written by George C. Evans Jr. and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Holy Spirit as Space for the Living, George Evans recognizes the significance of the Spirit in pneumatology within the New Testament, emphasizing the Spirit's indwelling presence as a person. However, Evans notes that the functional aspect of the Spirit as the presence of God is often overlooked. The Spirit not only gives life (ruah) but also creates space for individuals to live and thrive. This spatial understanding suggests that the Spirit constructs a unique space for born-again believers to inhabit, leading to self-awareness and a transformed lifeworld. Evans adopts a spatial hermeneutic, drawing inspiration from Jesus's encounter with Nicodemus, to explore different spatial productions and their connection to the experience of being reborn within the space of the Spirit. Through this approach, he develops a concept of Christian spatiality that expands our theological understanding and highlights space as a construct shaped by the Spirit. By considering the role of the Spirit in creating and shaping our lived experience, Evans unveils a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the Spirit and its impact on our spiritual journey.
