Book The Spiral After Effect

Download or read book The Spiral After Effect written by Harry C. Holland and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiral After-Effect presents the visual phenomenon of the spiral after-effect in clinical investigations. This book explains how and under what conditions the illusion happens or can be modified. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the features of illusion that are similar to many of the characteristics of other movement perceptions, including vividness, velocity, and persistence. This text then examines the complex structure and the geometric function of the inducing stimulus. Other chapters consider the effects of drugs on the spiral illusion, which is rather strange when one considers the wide use of the phenomenon in patient groups who may be receiving substantial admixtures of compound for therapeutic purposes. This book discusses as well the relationship between intelligence and perception of the spiral after-effect. The final chapter deals with the conditioned after-effect. Clinical psychologists and readers who are interested in personality research will find this book useful.

Book The Motion Aftereffect

Download or read book The Motion Aftereffect written by George Mather and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motion perception lies at the heart of the scientific study of vision. The motion aftereffect (MAE) is the appearance of directional movement in a stationary object or scene after the viewer has been exposed to viusal motion in the opposite direction. For example, after one has looked at a waterfall for a period of time, the scene beside the waterfall may appear to move upward when one's gaze is transfered to it. Although the phenomenon seems simple, research has revealed copmlexities in the underlying mechanisms, and offered general lessons about how the brain processes visual information. In the 1990s alone, more than 200 papers have been published on MAE, largely inspired by improved techniques for examining brain electrophysiology and by emerging new theories of motion perception.

Book Differences in Visual Perception

Download or read book Differences in Visual Perception written by Jules Davidoff and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differences in Visual Perception: The Individual Eye examines the differences in visual perception that can occur in various circumstances when observers perceive the “same event. More specifically, the book considers the distinction between “what happens when a person looks at the world directly and when he sits with his eyes closed and thinks. This book is organized into five chapters and begins with an overview of differences in perception that are in operation for only a short time, emphasizing the distinction between short and long-term effects and at what point “short becomes “long. The reader is then introduced to the development of perception, touching on topics such as the nature-nurture issue, visual acuity and visual discrimination, color-vision, space perception, and attentional processes. The ambiguity of the stimulus is also discussed, along with the perceptual theory known as “transactionalism, how the visual world is interpreted, and the nature of the input to the visual system. The theme that runs throughout this work is the fact that the same external input does not necessarily bring about in all of us the same perception. This book will prove useful to students as well as established researchers interested in visual perception and cognition.

Book Experiments in Personality Volume 2 Psychology Revivals

Download or read book Experiments in Personality Volume 2 Psychology Revivals written by H. J. Eysenck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1960, the two volumes of Experiments in Personality report a number of experiments in psychogenetics, psychopharmacology, psychodiagnostics, psychometrics and psychodynamics, all of which formed part of the programme of research which had been developing from the late 1940s at the Maudsley Hospital. Presenting the studies together in a book, rather than the more usual route of journal articles, was itself felt to be an experiment at the time, especially given the wide area covered. The decision was deliberate because all the studies reported formed part of a larger whole, which would have been lost if published separately. Volume II looks at psychodiagnostics, psychodynamics and psychometrics.

Book A Methodological Study of Confinement

Download or read book A Methodological Study of Confinement written by Donald W. Ormiston and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-four subjects divided into two groups were confined for 8 hrs in a lighted 5 by 8 ft cubicle where they worked occasionally on tracking, monitoring, and time estimation tasks and noted somatic complaints. Visual illusions were administered before and after confinement. Twenty subjects in another group underwent all of the tests but were not confined. A battery of personality tests was given to the subjects 1-3 months before they participated. Correlations among the personality test scores, the changes in visual illusions, and the performance tasks were computed. The results of the performance tasks showed no significant differences between the confined and nonconfined groups. Time estimated did not vary significantly during confinement. Confirmatory evidence was gained favoring the use of the spiral after-effect and rejecting and latency of autokinesis as criterion measures of confinement stress.
