In some instances, the first evidence of chronic pulmonary berylliosis have also been noted while the victim was still being exposed to compounds of beryllium, but in others, periods of four or more years have intervened between the last exposure and the onset of the disease. An experiment was devised to provide information on the rate at which beryllium oxide dust could accumulate in the lungs of rats breathing an atmosphere containing such dust, and a second experiment was arranged in order to study the rate at which beryllium oxide leaves the lungs after exposure is terminated.
