Book The Special Forces Organization for Foreign Internal Defense in 2010

Download or read book The Special Forces Organization for Foreign Internal Defense in 2010 written by Christopher K. Haas and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study analysis reveals that a successful 2010 FID/counterinsurgency organization requires unity of effort; coordinated and effective intelligence; minimum use of violence; integrated psychological warfare operations; effective mechanisms to enhance legitimacy (both U.S. and host nation); precision targeting of the insurgent infrastructure; perseverance; and patience. The organizational structure that has the capabilities of meeting these requirements is a 'new' organization that calls for the current Special Forces Group organization to form the nucleus of this new Special Forces Group 2010. The organization consists of a group command structure augmented by an Interagency Coordination Detachment. Reporting to the group command is an enhanced group staff, two Special Forces battalions, one support battalion, one civil affairs company, one psychological operations company, one signal company, one military police company, one aviation company, and one engineer company. This organizational structure offers maximum flexibility with limited direct U.S. involvement while providing effective support for the host nation to win the support of its people and defeat the insurgency.

Book FM 3 05 202 Special Forces Foreign Internal Defense Operations

Download or read book FM 3 05 202 Special Forces Foreign Internal Defense Operations written by Department of the Army Headquarters and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Internal Defense Operations, along with Special Reconnaissance and Direct Action, are a core task of the United States Special Operations Community. US Army Special Forces are currently engaged in Foreign Internal Defense operations from Iraq and Afghanistan to Colombia and the Philippines. Foreign Internal Defense means providing support to a host nation's military, police and intelligence processes - activities which are extremely important for new US Allies. Typically FID operations are undertaken in response to internal strife within the host nation such as an insurgency. Narco-terrorism, religious terrorism and economic crisis are all triggers for Special Forces FID assistance. From the preface page; "Field manual (FM) 3-05.202, Special Forces Foreign Internal Defense Operations, supports FM 3-05.20, Special Forces Operations, which is the keystone manual of Special Forces (SF). FM 3-05.202 defines the current United States (U.S.) Army SF concept of planning and conducting SF foreign internal defense (FID) missions. As with all doctrinal manuals, FM 3-05.202 is authoritative but not directive. It serves as a guide and does not preclude SF units from developing their own standing operating procedures (SOPs) to meet their needs. It explains planning, roles of SF in FID, and the various programs that SF Soldiers participate in to conduct FID operations. Other SF primary missions are discussed at length in appropriate manuals in the series." Presented in Special Operations Press' distinctive OCP camouflage cover denoting a current publication, this manual is printed in easy-to-read 6 x 9, perfect-bound paperback format. Proudly printed in the USA.

Book Special Operations Forces

Download or read book Special Operations Forces written by John M. Collins and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, John Collins speaks with the authority of one who was literally present at the birth of the low intensity conflict era. His long-term, intimate, and direct contact with the esoteric world of special operations has few parallels. Their roots go back in time and history considerably farther, but today's Special Operations Forces are largely products of the past three decades. Their development has been in response to the pressures of world-wide situations perceived to bear upon or which actually do affect American strategic interests. The use of raw military power may not provide solutions to the complex problems involved and may even be counter-productive. Special Operations forces, uniquely suited to fill the quasi-military gap, require the highest degree of professional competence in the application of the classical principles of war. This is a big order. It is difficult in a few words to pay John Collins the tribute he deserves for continuing efforts to educate both the Congress and the U.S. Armed Forces concerning the capabilities and limitations of special operations and the forces they involve. This latest addition to his carefully researched studies combines history, philosophy, factual data, and reference materials in a single document that should be on the desks of civilian and military leaders whose responsibilities relate in any way to special operations.

Book Ending the Debate

Download or read book Ending the Debate written by D. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an ongoing debate within the Special Forces community whether unconventional warfare and foreign internal defense are applicable in the contemporary and future Special Operations environments, based on current doctrinal definitions and operational concepts. For unconventional warfare, the debate surrounds its current broad and confusing definition and whether it can be an overarching term for efforts against nonstate actors in the Global War on Terrorism. The foreign internal defense debate is not over definitions, but responsibilities, as the conventional military begins to play a larger role in foreign internal defense, a legacy Special Forces mission. This thesis argues that unconventional warfare needs a clear and concise definition, such as "operations by a state or non-state actor to support an insurgency aimed at the overthrow of a government or occupying power," that unconventional warfare should not be "transformed" to fight global insurgency; that there is an identifiable relationship between unconventional warfare and foreign internal defense called the "transition point" signifying the change from unconventional warfare to foreign internal defense, and that this relationship can be modeled; that operational preparation of the environment is not unconventional warfare, but an emerging operation requiring its own doctrine; and that unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, and operational preparation of the environment will be the dominate Special Forces missions in the Global War on Terrorism.

Book Special Operations Forces and Foreign Internal Defense An Effective Counterterrorism Method

Download or read book Special Operations Forces and Foreign Internal Defense An Effective Counterterrorism Method written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special Operations Forces (SOF) can be expected to maintain the current commitment levels in both Iraq and Afghanistan; however, Senior US military and SOF leadership must recognize the difficulty of balancing short-term goals and long-term solutions in the War on Terrorism. In a war of such long duration, SOF can provide the nation with many more strategic and operational options than just special reconnaissance and direct action missions in support of the JTF commander during combat operations. This paper argues that uniformly coordinated Foreign Internal Defense (FID) activities, undertaken by United States SOF, is the appropriate method for achieving long-term results in the War on Terrorism. The utility of persistent SOF activities with allies is described using recent cas study examples, strategic level CT capstone documents, and current FID doctrine.

Book Role of Air Force Special Operations in Foreign Internal Defense

Download or read book Role of Air Force Special Operations in Foreign Internal Defense written by John R Moulton (II.) and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current trends in the international political arena, combined with fiscal constraints at home, are pointing toward a significant change in US defense policy. With the drawdown of conventional forces and forward deployed units, US defense interests abroad will increasingly rely on the armed forces of other nations. As witnessed in the recent Persian Gulf crisis, maintenance of vital US strategic interests hinges upon the development of social, economic, political, and military institutions favorable to our foreign policy objectives. The overall military role in this effort is termed foreign internal defense (FID). As a primary mission of the US Special Operations Command, FID is also an integral part of future USAF special operations endeavors. The USAF plays a significant role in FID by providing analysis and training in operations, maintenance, and logistical support to host-nation forces. This paper focuses on emerging operational requirements and whether or not these requirements necessitate the development and institutionalization of a structure within the Air Force Special Operations Command to develop, execute, and monitor Air Force efforts in foreign internal defense. Because the nature of confrontations most often associated with internal defense fall under the rubric of 'low-intensity conflict, ' the question of maintaining an organic capability to train in counterinsurgency and guerrilla warfare is also addressed.

Book From Bosnia To Baghdad The Evolution Of US Army Special Forces From 1995 2004

Download or read book From Bosnia To Baghdad The Evolution Of US Army Special Forces From 1995 2004 written by Armando J. Ramirez and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a historical analysis of the evolution of US Army Special Forces operations from 1995 to 2004, focusing specifically on operations conducted in the Balkans (Bosnia and Kosovo), Afghanistan and Iraq, answering the research question: How have the operations conducted by US Army Special Forces evolved from the Balkans in 1995 through Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)? The thesis examines the progression of Special Forces operations during each of the aforementioned campaigns, analyzing their evolution in the areas of intelligence operations, unconventional warfare and foreign internal defense, close air support, integration with conventional forces and the institutionalization of lessons learned. The thesis concludes by examining future roles of US Army Special Forces with respect to employment. Tracing the progression of Special Forces employment from the Balkans to OIF is critical to understanding the factors contributing to the success of Special Forces operations in both the decisive operations and stability and support (SASO) phases of OEF and OIF.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 8 of the Army University Large Scale Combat Operations series. The Competitive Advantage: Special Operations Forces in Large Scale Combat Operations presents twelve historical case studies of special operations forces from World War I through Operation Iraqi Freedom. This volume sheds light upon the emerging roles, missions, and unique capabilities that have forged a path for Army Special Operations Forces today. These case studies set Large Scale Combat Operations in the center and place ARSOF's role in the forefront. If a reader were to take one piece from this volume, it would be the clear understanding of the close synergy that occurs between the Conventional Force and SOF in Large Scale Combat Operations for major wars in the 20th and early 21st century. That synergy should provide a broad azimuth for military planners and practitioners to follow as the Army, SOF, and the Joint Force combine to preserve the peace, defend the Nation, and defeat any adversary.

This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has always been a romantic fascination with special operations forces (SOF). The idea of secret commandos or Rangers striking from the shadows surprising the enemy with overwhelming speed, violence of action, and cutting-edge technology appeals to America's image of highly trained, elite Soldiers. There is, however, another Soldier who fights from the shadows. This one is perhaps less known and far less understood. His real weapons are a deep understanding of terrain, the relationships built, and the influence developed to motivate and train others to take up the fight. These Soldiers are the U.S. Army SF, the "quiet professionals" whom history and popular culture often overlook. Designed to organize, train, and support indigenous personnel in behind-the-lines resistance activities, SF belongs to an organization unique in the Army's history. Founded at the Psychological Warfare Center at Fort Bragg in 1952 and based upon lessons learned and formation used in guerrilla warfare during World War II, its sole purpose was UW. The experience in Vietnam gave SF a second purpose: countering a subversive insurgency. This brief history identifies the precursors and major developments that created modern U.S. Army SF. FM 3-18 is the principal manual for Special Forces (SF) doctrine. It describes SF roles, missions, capabilities, organization, mission command, employment, and sustainment operations across the range of military operations. Book TC 31 73 Special Forces Advisor Guide

This book was released on 2012-12-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mission of the modern Special Forces Soldier is not limited to Special Recon and Direct Action tasks. When working with 3rd World-level militaries and guerrilla groups in far-away countries and often primitive areas, he is required to be part-diplomat and part-mentor while carrying out his duties. The Special Forces Advisor Guide provides useful doctrinal guidance on how to get the job done when the odds are stacked against a successful outcome. From the preface page; "Training Circular (TC) 31-73, Special Forces Advisor Guide, supports Field Manual (FM) 3-05.20 Special Forces Operations -- as well as FM 3-05.202, Special Forces Foreign Internal Defense Operations. It defines the subjective, intangible nuances of human interaction. It is designed to assist the SF Soldier in understanding and navigating the complexities of human behavior as it relates to cross-cultural communication. As with all doctrinal manuals, TC 31-73 is authoritative but not directive. It serves as a guide, but does not preclude SF units from developing their own standing operating procedures (SOPs) to meet their needs. This TC focuses on interface between SF, United States Government (USG) personnel, foreign government personnel, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs); however, the content is intended to prove useful in any human interaction."
