Book The Search for the Spaghetti Tree

Download or read book The Search for the Spaghetti Tree written by Martin E. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many stories are written for children. Many have overt or subtle messages. This tale, The Search for The Spaghetti Tree, is a tale I have told to my grandchildren, and to many children with special needs at my school. It has always stimulated their imaginations and led to a whole variety of questions. Some of these now adults are telling the tale to their children. All laugh, not because it is silly, but because it demonstrates how courage and cunning can win over evil.Today, video games, television, and movies have taken away much of the imaginative play in our children. More books need be read, and more libraries visited. Hopefully this book will stimulate children to read more and to understand some of the basic principles of life.

Book Found Footage Horror Films

Download or read book Found Footage Horror Films written by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the horror subgenre du jour, found footage horror's amateur filmmaking look has made it available to a range of budgets. Surviving by adapting to technological and cultural shifts and popular trends, found footage horror is a successful and surprisingly complex experiment in blurring the lines between quotidian reality and horror's dark and tantalizing fantasies. Found Footage Horror Films explores the subgenre's stylistic, historical and thematic development. It examines the diverse prehistory beyond Man Bites Dog (1992) and Cannibal Holocaust (1980), paying attention to the safety films of the 1960s, the snuff-fictions of the 1970s, and to television reality horror hoaxes and mockumentaries during the 1980s and 1990s in particular. It underscores the importance of The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Paranormal Activity (2007), and considers YouTube's popular rise in sparking the subgenre's recent renaissance.

Book A Short History of Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce

Download or read book A Short History of Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce written by Massimo Montanari and published by Europa Editions. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A surprisingly wide-ranging journey into the story of this beloved dish and “an utterly fascinating discourse on food history” (The Daily Beast). Intellectually engaging and deliciously readable, this is a stereotype-defying history of how one of the most recognizable symbols of Italian cuisine and national identity is the product of centuries of encounters, dialogue, and exchange. Is it possible to identify a starting point in history from which everything else unfolds—a single moment that can explain the present and reveal the essence of who we are? According to Massimo Montanari, this is just a myth. Historical phenomena can only be understood dynamically—by looking at how events and identities develop and change as a result of encounters and combinations that are often unexpected. As he shows in this lively, brilliant, and surprising essay, finding the origin of spaghetti—or anything else—is not as simple as it may seem. By tracing the history of the one of Italy’s “national dishes” —from Asia to America, from Africa to Europe; from the beginning of agriculture to the Middle Ages and up to the twentieth century—he reveals that in order to understand our own identity, we almost always need to look beyond ourselves to other cultures, peoples, and traditions. “Montanari’s research will delight readers and provide plenty of fodder for dinner-table discussion.” —Booklist “Full of delicious details.” —Publishers Weekly

Book The Anatomy of Fake News

Download or read book The Anatomy of Fake News written by Nolan Higdon and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 2016 U.S. presidential election, concerns about fake news have fostered calls for government regulation and industry intervention to mitigate the influence of false content. These proposals are hindered by a lack of consensus concerning the definition of fake news or its origins. Media scholar Nolan Higdon contends that expanded access to critical media literacy education, grounded in a comprehensive history of fake news, is a more promising solution to these issues. The Anatomy of Fake News offers the first historical examination of fake news that takes as its goal the effective teaching of critical news literacy in the United States. Higdon employs a critical-historical media ecosystems approach to identify the producers, themes, purposes, and influences of fake news. The findings are then incorporated into an invaluable fake news detection kit. This much-needed resource provides a rich history and a promising set of pedagogical strategies for mitigating the pernicious influence of fake news.

Book The Practical Joker s Handbook

Download or read book The Practical Joker s Handbook written by Tim Nyberg and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tim Nyberg, author of the hilarious, definitive guide to practical jokes, is back with The Practical Joker's Handbook: The Sequel. This compendium of all-new practical jokes is a wild, diabolical follow-up to the original. Like The Practical Joker's Handbook, this sequel is built upon contributions submitted to his Web site from Nyberg's fans. Of course, the entertaining Nyberg has sifted though his warped fans' merciless suggestions to weed out the dangerous, the mean-spirited, and the potentially litigious. As Nyberg says in the book's introduction, it's only a good practical joke if "both parties (eventually) find humor in the prank." The Practical Joker's Handbook: The Sequel is a sly collection of blueprints for jokes and pranks to play at home, at work, at school, at the office--anywhere.

  • Author : Brian Hand
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-10-25
  • ISBN : 9460914519
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Voices from the Classroom written by Brian Hand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much attention currently being given to argument-based inquiry in national and state curriculum documents. Students are being required to be able to generate and evaluate science knowledge, and to think critically and judge the value of evidence and explanations. The intent of the book is to provide a rich and broad view of the impact of argument-based inquiry in the elementary classrooms from the perspective of the teacher. All the teachers and professional development authors were engaged in promoting and using argument based inquiry as the approach to teaching science. They were implementing the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach as the argument based approach for classroom practice. As researchers we constantly work to present our views of these experiences with the voice of the teachers only being relayed through the perspective of the researcher. The intent of this book is to provide an opportunity for us as a community to listen to what the teachers are telling us. Importantly as demands are being placed on classroom experiences that provide opportunities for students to pose questions, make claims, and provide evidence, that is, to think critically and reason like scientists, we need to understand what this looks like from the perspective of the teacher. This book brings together a range of elementary teachers from kindergarten through to year 6 who have used the Science Writing Heuristic approach to teach argument-based inquiry. These teachers have all gone through professional development programs and successfully implemented the approach at a high level.
