Download or read book A Life in Shadow written by Stephen Bell and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French naturalist and medical doctor Aimé Bonpland (1773–1858) was one of the most important scientific explorers of South America in the early nineteenth century. From 1799 to 1804, he worked alongside Alexander von Humboldt as the latter carried out his celebrated research in northern South America, but he later returned to conduct his own research farther south. A Life in Shadow accounts for the entire span of Bonpland's remarkable and diverse career in South America—in Argentina, Paraguay (where he was imprisoned for nearly a decade), Uruguay, and southernmost Brazil—based on extensive archival material. The study reconnects Bonpland's divided records in Europe and South America and delves into his studies of rural resources in interior regions of South America, including experimental cultivation techniques. This is a fascinating account of a man—a doctor, farmer, rancher, scientific explorer, and political conspirator—who interacted in many revealing ways with the evolving societies and institutions of South America.
Download or read book Culture Shock Life under a Dictator written by Caroline Buntz and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture Shock is about a Southern girl, who goes really deep south to Argentina and experiences Peron, the death of Evita, the Peronistas, and living next to the notorious Adolph Eichmann. In 1951, Peron (the dictator of Argentina) allowed Nazis to escape from Europe to Argentina with perfect sanctuary. America wasn't sure if Hitler really died in the bunker or not (forensics weren't that good back then), so they watched to see what Nazis came through Argentina. It wasn't until YEARS later when Caroline's daughter was working on a project for the Naval Oceanographic and Meteorological Command at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi that she learned that her husband's position at the embassy in 1951 in Buenos Aires was pre-CIA. This gave her an explanation as to why she and her husband were sent to live in a German boarding house that was full of Nazi/Gestapo officers and run by a German Contessa. The icing on the cake was that Adolph Eichmann lived in the room next to them.

Download or read book Ancient Seas of Southern Florida written by Edward J. Petuch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have done an outstanding job of compiling decades of data collected by their own field reconnaissance and other geoscientists... This represents a significant contribution to the understanding of the development of the Florida carbonate platform, and it will assist other disciplines as they strive for better understanding of our groundwater resources, aquifer characterizations, paleoenvironmental interpretations, and historical/educational geology programs. Walt Schmidt, Florida State Geologist & Chief, Florida Geological Survey, USA (praise for the first edition) Painting a complete picture of the history of the Everglades, Ancient Seas of Southern Florida: The Geology and Paleontology of the Everglades Region, Second Edition provides an overview of the geology, paleontology, and paleoceanography of the region. It emphasizes the upper 300m of the geologic framework of the area and gives insight into the local stratigraphy, geomorphology, lithology, and historical geology. Designed to be a field guide as well as a reference, the book is illustrated in full color with brand new photographs of exposed geologic sections, stratotype localities, collection sites, and details of interesting fossil beds. In this book, the authors illustrate almost 800 of the most important and diagnostic stratigraphic index fossils found in these beds, including over 50 species of corals and almost 700 species of mollusks, along with echinoderms, crustaceans, echinoids, petrified wood, and aquatic vertebrates. A new edition of The Geology of the Everglades and Adjacent Areas, it contains larger images of fossil shells, corals, and echinoderms and includes new updated geological data and concepts, as well as an expanded iconography of stratigraphic index fossils. Based on the data gleaned from these fossils, it also offers a series of geomorphological visualizations, showing the possible appearances of the Florida Peninsula during the times when it was covered by tropical seas, from the Oligocene to the late Pleistocene. This second edition provides a new perspective on both the historical geology of southern Florida and the evolution of one of America’s most beautiful natural treasures, the Everglades.
