Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bowdoin Alumnus, Vol. 5: 1930-1931 One goes to college, not to weigh himself down with the product of other people's brains, but to develop his own. He Should beware of overdoing in his studies, as well as in athletics. He shouldn't stunt himself by making himself a mental beast of burden. By keeping loaded to the break ing - point a man can kill his natural energy, so that he is never able to do his best work. There is danger, too, of making a fetish of rank. A soft A in a snap course, taken to smooth the way to Phi Beta Kappa, isn't worth a hundredth part as much as a hard C in a difficult study that will be useful later. A man goes to college to build a strong will, to learn how to work, to, concentrate. He needs to develop a' well-grounded re spect for himself and his own opinions. One should not smother his power of inde pendent thought by gaining such a rever ence for authority that he doesn't dare to think for himself. He should never forget that he has within him something far more important than any weak imitation' of others. Since the world began, nobody everhad a problem precisely like his own, no body else will or can solve it for him, and it will call for everything he has to solve it right. Book The Adult Learner

Download or read book The Adult Learner written by Malcolm S. Knowles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Book Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America

Download or read book Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America written by James D. Kornwolf and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating more than 3,000 illustrations, Kornwolf's work conveys the full range of the colonial encounter with the continent's geography, from the high forms of architecture through formal landscape design and town planning. From these pages emerge the fine arts of environmental design, an understanding of the political and economic events that helped to determine settlement in North America, an appreciation of the various architectural and landscape forms that the settlers created, and an awareness of the diversity of the continent's geography and its peoples. Considering the humblest buildings along with the mansions of the wealthy and powerful, public buildings, forts, and churches, Kornwolf captures the true dynamism and diversity of colonial communities - their rivalries and frictions, their outlooks and attitudes - as they extended their hold on the land.

Download or read book From Serra to Sancho written by Craig H. Russell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in the California missions was a pluralistic combination of voices and instruments, of liturgy and spectacle, of styles and functions--and even of cultures--in a new blend that was non-existent before the Franciscan friars made their way to California beginning in 1769. From Serra to Sancho explores the exquisite sacred music that flourished on the West Coast of the United States when it was under Spanish and Mexican rule, delving into the historical, cultural, biographical, and stylistic aspects of California mission music during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Author Craig H. Russell examines how mellifluous plainchant, reverent hymns, spunky folkloric ditties, "classical" music in the style of Haydn, and even Native American drumming were interwoven into a tapestry of resonant beauty. In addition to extensive musical and cultural analysis, Russell draws upon hundreds of primary documents in California, Mexico, Madrid, Barcelona, London, and Mallorca. It is through the melding together of this information from geographically separated places that he brings the mystery of California's mission music into sharper focus. Russell's groundbreaking study sheds new light on the cultural exchange that took place in the colonial United States, as well as on the pervasive worldwide influence of Iberian music as a whole.
