Book The South During Reconstruction 1865 1877

Download or read book The South During Reconstruction 1865 1877 written by E. Merton Coulter and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1947-06-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is Volume VIII of A History of the South, a ten-volume series designed to present a thoroughly balanced history of all the complex aspects of the South's culture from 1607 to the present. Like its companion volumes, The South During Reconstruction is written by an outstanding student of Southern history, E. Merton Coulter, who is also one of the editors of the series. The tragic Reconstruction period still casts its long shadow over the South. In his study, Mr. Coulter looks beyond the familiar political and economic patterns into the more fundamental attitudes and activities of the people. In this dismal period of racial and political bitterness, little notice has been taken of the strivings for reorganization of agriculture under free labor, for industrial and transportation development, for a free-school system and higher education, and for the advance of religious, literary, and other cultural interests. Mr. Coulter's book shows these things to be very real, and they are related to the Radical program, which, conceived both in good and evil, ran its course and finally collapsed. This period forms an important chapter in American history. It is an account of a region, defeated in one of the world's great wars, struggling to rebuild its social and economic structure and to win back for itself a place in the reunited nation.

Book Reconstruction and the New South 1865 1913

Download or read book Reconstruction and the New South 1865 1913 written by Clyde N. Wilson and published by Shotwell Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE THIRD INSTALLMENT of Dr. Clyde N. Wilson's SOUTHERN READER'S GUIDES distills more than a half century of scholarship into identifying and describing 50 essential books on the topic of the Reconstruction (1865-1876) and the New South (1877-1913). Dr. Wilson, Emeritus Distinguished Professor of History of the University of South Carolina, was editor of the highly-praised Papers of John C. Calhoun and is the author or editor of more than 20 other books, and over 700 articles, essays, and reviews in a variety of books and journals, scholarly and popular. He is considered by many to be the greatest living historian of the South. If you want to understand Reconstruction and the New South without wasting your time on 3rd string authors and the p.c. infected pseudo-history coming out of the modern academy, there is no greater guide than Dr. Wilson. _________________ "I really enjoyed this! Wilson is a great guide to this literature. Reading this is like going to a bookstore with a wonderfully informed, witty old friend. Just be careful! You might- like me- end up buying several more books from his list." - Reader Review, The Old South: 50 Essential Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stampp's classic work offers a revisionist explanation for the radical failure to achieve equality for blacks, and of the effect that Conservative rule had on the subsequent development of the South. Refuting former schools of thought, Stampp challenges the notions that slavery was somehow just a benign aspect of Southern culture, and how the failures during the reconstruction period created a ripple effect that is still seen today. Praise for The Era of Reconstruction: “ . . . This “brief political history of reconstruction” by a well-known Civil War authority is a thoughtful and detailed study of the reconstruction era and the distorted legends still clinging to it.”—Kirkus Reviews “It is to be hoped that this work reaches a large audience, especially among people of influence, and will thus help to dispel some of the myths about Reconstructions that hamper efforts in the civil rights field to this day.”—Albert Castel, Western Michigan University

Book Stories of the South

  • Author : K. Stephen Prince
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014-04-28
  • ISBN : 9781469615561
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book Stories of the South written by K. Stephen Prince and published by . This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, the North assumed significant power to redefine the South, imagining a region rebuilt and modeled on northern society. The white South actively resisted these efforts, battling the legal strictures of Reconstruction on the ground. Meanwhile, white southern storytellers worked to recast the South's image, romanticizing the Lost Cause and heralding the birth of a New South. Prince argues that this cultural production was as important as political competition and economic striving in turning the South and the nation away from the egalitarian promises of Reconstruction and toward Jim Crow.
