I wrote the "Song" for my children, who were born in Kansas, and desired to know something of the early history of their State. For this purpose I have added ample notes. The other poems connect me with things and persons, about which or to whom they were written, and thus they also are a part of my life. There has been of late a personal demand on me for their publication. I send them forth, not for profit or fame, but simply as messages of Patriotism, of Friendship, and Love.
