This pocketbook is designed as an aide-memoire with checklists to make life easier for busy skippers and a must-have reference for first-time skippers. It should also prove an invaluable reference book for the RYA Yachtmaster syllabus. The book has been helping skippers for nearly 20 years and has now been edited and thoroughly updated by Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner, Sara Hopkinson. Book The New Crew s Pocketbook

Download or read book The New Crew s Pocketbook written by Tim Davison and published by Fernhurst Books Limited. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going aboard a sailing yacht for the first time is an exciting experience, but it can be a bit daunting. It introduces you to many unknowns: terra firma is left behind, the boat is propelled by something you can't see (the wind), there are ropes everywhere and a whole new vocabulary opens up! Your skipper will brief you on the key things you need to know, but this book is a great opportunity to learn a bit beforehand which will give you the basic knowledge to work the boat, be safe, have fun... and be asked back for more! Written in a friendly and approachable way, it assumes no nautical knowledge and uses diagrams and photographs to demystify the art of sailing. Devised to be read by new crew before they arrive at the boat, it is also great to keep on board as a quick and easy reference guide. Ideal for skippers to give to anyone joining them on board for the first time. As soon as a person steps aboard they are crewing: drawn into casting off, hoisting sails, winching and even steering. It's impossible to cover everything in your briefing, so any knowledge they can gain beforehand is a blessing and will make your yacht a happier, safer place for everyone. Additional chapters covering spinnaker handling are available online and in the eBook.

Download or read book The Last of the Vikings written by Johan Bojer and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dangerous storms, treacherous waters and friends who sometimes turn out to be enemies. The life of the Norwegian fishermen was never easy. If you love 'The Vikings' series on Netflix, you will love this book! Set against the harsh beauty of the Lofoten Islands, 'The Last of the Vikings' is a stirring depiction, both of man's perseverance and of the end of an era. Its action centres upon a single fishing season, when the Norwegian peasantry, descendants of the Vikings, make their annual voyage to the islands. For the people at home, fishing was just as hard, but in a different way. The knowledge that your husband, son or father was away for months, risking his life, wore on those staying at home. The main character's wife is described as hating the sea - she never saw God in the sea. He just existed back at her childhood farm. This is a tale of the poor and their ongoing struggle to live and provide for their families. Full of adventures and tales, though quite sad in places, this classic book makes for an interesting read and is one of those stories that should be read at least once in a lifetime! Johan Bojer (born Johan Kristoffer Hansen) was a popular Norwegian novelist and dramatist. He grew up as a foster child in a poor family living in Rissa near Trondheim, Norway. He learned of the realities of poverty early in life. Bojer principally wrote about the lives of poor farmers and fishermen, both in his native Norway and among the Norwegian immigrants in the United States. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times and is best remembered for his novel 'The Emigrants', a major novel dealing with the motivations and trials of Norwegians that emigrated to the plains of North Dakota.

Book Jeremiah s Path to Confirmation

Download or read book Jeremiah s Path to Confirmation written by Mark Ira Krausman and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremiah is a young boy who, by the wishes of his mother, who is a deacon in the church, comes up with a very intuitive idea of her own design to bring her young son to come to know the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit--wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord--and also the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, modesty, charity, chastity. As this young man embarks on his paper route, early Saturday morning, his life unfolds in a discovery of all that he is as witness and partaker. As he goes thus, he makes notation in his pocketbook. Jeremiah honors his mother's wishes, and all his notations are here to learn from as well, plus a section at the end of this book so that your child or young adult or adult can come interact and make notations of their own path to come and know the Holy Spirit as well. Peace be with you always, and may God bless you now and forever.
