Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creation in Six Days offers an exegetical, literary, and theological defense of the traditional interpretation of the Genesis account of six-day creation. Jordan's account is primarily designed to answer any approach to the text of Genesis, such as the increasingly popular Framework Hypothesis, that pits the text's literary features against its historical and narrative sense. Beyond his exegetical critique of several prominent positions, Jordan offers a constructive reading of the early parts of Genesis and also seeks to uncover the assumptions which attract people to the Framework Interpretation and similar views. The explanation, he says, lies in the acceptance of many of the questionable assumptions of modern science on the part of most Christians today, coupled with the pervasiveness of a gnostic or nonhistorical attitude toward the Christian faith.

Book On the Six Days of Creation

Download or read book On the Six Days of Creation written by St. Gregory of Nyssa and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of our new series, Fathers of the Church: Shorter Works, will be available in the summer of 2021. This series, to be printed only in paperback format, will offer English translations of treatises, homilies, poems, and letters of the Church Fathers in slim, easily affordable volumes. In this way a multitude of important writings will become accessible to scholars and students as well as the reading public. This is the first complete English translation of St. Gregory of Nyssa’s treatise On the Six Days of Creation (In Hexaemeron). It was probably written in 380-381, and is designed as both a defense and a critique of his recently deceased brother St. Basil’s better known homilies on the creation story as set out in the first chapter of Genesis. At the same time it incorporates Gregory’s own observations on the Genesis text, which reflect his desire to show the consistency between Scripture and the philosophy and natural science of his day A notable feature is Gregory’s presentation of God’s creation of the world as what has been called a “substantification” of God’s own will, creatio ex Deo rather than creatio ex nihilo. Other ideas of his seem interestingly to foreshadow those of modern science, notably his challenge to the idea that matter is a primary ontological category and his theory that the world as we know it developed through a process of “sequence” (akolouthia) from an originally simultaneous creation of everything. Gregory differs from Basil in maintaining that the “waters above the firmament” in Genesis 1 are spiritual rather than physical in nature. He uses a modified form of Aristotle’s theory of elements, together with some interesting observations on geography and meteorology, to construct a detailed and ingenious account of the “water cycle.” This description enables him to refute Basil’s notion that there needs to be an extra supply of physical water above the firmament so that the water lost from earthly seas and rivers through evaporation can be “topped up.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six Days and the Sabbath begins when Moses, being hidden in a cleft of a rock, saw into eternity past, back to the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth and then compares what Moses saw to that which God spoke of creation to Job. God told Job that at creation the morning stars were singing and the angels were shouting for joy, but rather than hearing the morning stars singing and angels shouting for joy, Moses saw only an earth without form and void. From that place of void and darkness, God revealed to Moses what He said, brought forth, created, and His plan of salvation in all He made during the days God named six days and the Sabbath. Moses only wrote ten words about creation, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." It is the power of God over evil that excited Moses, and it is of no surprise that when Moses came down from Mount Sinai his face was radiant.

Book Why Six Days Followed by a Day of Rest

Download or read book Why Six Days Followed by a Day of Rest written by Ronald Marks and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Six Days followed by a day of rest? is not a book about young-earth creation. Nor is it a book exhorting the necessity of a good hermeneutic to properly understand and apply the Gospel to everyday living. It's not even a book about eschatology. It is all of these. And more. "Why Six Days?" asks, outlines, and answers the question of why God claimed to have created the universe in six literal days followed by a day of rest. The answer contains startling conclusions of God's clear revelation contained within those six days. As the prophet Isaiah noted, God has declared the end from the beginning. Dr. Marks documents this idea, held by the ancient Jews, the Disciples, the early church, and theologians since that time. That understanding is that God foretold of the millennial reign of Jesus Christ as the seventh day of creation. His "resting" on the seventh day, and the commands to observe the sabbath, are all part of God's revelation of these events. Not for sensationalism. Not to detract from the Gospel. But, an integrated part of bringing Himself glory.

Book Seventh Day The Final Act of Creation The

Download or read book Seventh Day The Final Act of Creation The written by James Madison McCauley III and published by Aspect Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy" (Exodus 20:8). But what does that really mean? Why is Sunday worship more prevalent in Christianity today? What makes the Sabbath so special anyway? These are the kind of questions James McCauley seeks to answer in The 7th Day, The Final Act of Creation. The Sabbath is often problematic for new and even lifelong members of the Seventh-day Adventist faith. McCauley dives deep into this topic and explains it from every angle. Masterfully addressing every controversy around it, McCauley aims to show the Sabbath’s relevance in the world today. Beginning with its history, nothing could be more fundamental to appreciating the Sabbath than understanding why it came into existence in the first place. Moving on to establish that it has a place in both the Old and New Testaments, McCauley makes clear that the Sabbath, unlike its Sunday counterpart, holds special blessings for those who keep it. The 7th Day helps one understand not only the Sabbath’s scriptural foundation but also its beauty and the life-giving peace it provides.
