Book The Significance of Fatigue Crack Closure

Download or read book The Significance of Fatigue Crack Closure written by W. Elber and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on 2024-T3 aluminum alloy sheet are described which confirm the occurrence of fatigue crack closure under cyclic tensile loading. The results show that a fatigue crack can be closed at the crack tip for up to half of the loading amplitude, leaving this portion of the cycle ineffective in propagating the crack. An expression for the crack propagation rate in terms of effective stress amplitude is proposed. This expression is fitted to existing constant amplitude crack propagation data for 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. The parameters evaluated provide a better fit to the data than other empirical expressions available. Analysis of qualitative experiments on variable amplitude loading shows that the crack closure phenomenon could account for acceleration and retardation effects in crack propagation.

Book Fractographic Reassessment of the Significance of Fatigue Crack Closure

Download or read book Fractographic Reassessment of the Significance of Fatigue Crack Closure written by R. Sunder and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were performed on Al-alloy test coupons under specially programmed variable amplitude load sequences to assess crack closure as well as actual microscopic crack extension. Quantitative fractography of the fractures suggests that closure can account for only a fraction of observed load interaction effects. Much of the observed retardation may be attributed to the shielding effect of the overload plastic zone, which can occur even if the crack is fully open. The study also indicates that load sequence effects attributed to notch root stress-strain hysteresis can occur only if closure is absent.

Topics ranging from the mechanisms of crack initiation, small crack behavior in metallic, intermetallic, ceramic and composite materials, experimental measurement, mechanistic and theoretical models, to the role of small cracks in fretting fatigue and the application of small crack results to the aging aircraft and high-cycle fatigue problems, are covered.

Book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction

Download or read book Fatigue Damage Crack Growth and Life Prediction written by F. Ellyin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-11-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue failure is a multi-stage process. It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

Book Fatigue of Structures and Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Structures and Materials written by J. Schijve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book The Significance of Sliding Mode Crack Closure on Mode III Fatigue Crack Growth

Download or read book The Significance of Sliding Mode Crack Closure on Mode III Fatigue Crack Growth written by SE. Stanzl and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Mode III loading, the surfaces of a crack move parallel to each other; friction, abrasion, and mutual support of the contacting parts of the microscopically rough crack faces result. These energy-dissipative processes reduce the effective load at the crack tip, a phenomenon known as "sliding mode crack closure" (SMCC). This effect has been studied by performing crack growth experiments on circumferentially notched specimens of high-strength (AISI 4340) and mild steel (AISI C1018) under pure cyclic torsion and under combined loading (cyclic Mode III + static Mode I). Crack growth rates without the influence of sliding mode crack closure ("true" crack growth rates) can be determined using an extrapolation procedure. These crack growth rates are independent of crack depth, specimen diameter, and loading level and are therefore a material characteristic for Mode III fatigue crack growth. With the aid of the "true" crack growth curve the extent of sliding mode crack closure can be quantitatively determined and the changes in fracture mode explained. By superimposing a static tensile load the sliding mode crack closure is reduced whereas the "true" crack growth rates are only slightly influenced.

Book A Study of Crack Closure in Fatigue

Download or read book A Study of Crack Closure in Fatigue written by T. T. Shih and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack closure phenomenon in fatigue was studied by using a Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The occurrence of crack closure was directly measured by an electrical-potential method, and indirectly by load-strain measurement. The experimental results showed that the onset of crack closure depends on both the stress ratio, and the maximum stress intensity factor. No crack closure was observed for stress ratio, greater than 0.3 in this alloy. A two-dimensional elastic model was used to explain the behavior of the recorded load-strain curves. Closure force was estimated by using this model. Yield level stress was found near the crack tip. Based on this estimated closure force, the crack opening displacement was calculated. This result showed that onset of crack closure detected by electrical-potential measurement and crack-opening-displacement measurement is the same. The implications of crack closure on fatigue crack are considered. The experimental results show that crack closure cannot fully account for the effect of stress ratio, on crack growth, and that it cannot be regarded as the sole cause for delay.
