This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sign of the Cross in the Western Liturgies IT has been the writer's endeavour, in the following pages, to consider some of the more important features which disclose themselves upon an examination of the use of the Sign of the Cross in the Western Liturgies, and especially in the canon of the mass. No attempt has been made at anything like a complete account of this ceremony. To do so would obviously have been quite beyond the scope of an Alcuin Club tract. What has been written, however, is published in the hope that it may do something towards making the use and purpose of this sacred gesture more intelligible to those who may not have been able to give to this subject the attention which it deserves. It will be noticed that the reader's attention has been especially called to (i) the extension of the celebrant's arms in madam Crucis, while pleading the merits of our Saviour's death and passion, to (2) the use of the sign of the cross in conse cration and (3) to the signings over the already consecrated elements - the host and chalice, - such a prominent ritual feature in the Western canon of the mass. In regard to the first question, it has been the writer's wish to call attention to the almost universal pre valence of this ceremony in the Western Church. So far as the last is concerned, it is his belief that he has pointed out some grave reasons why the practice of signing the already consecrated elements should be regarded as a liturgical anomaly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sign of the Cross in Madagascar IN 1895 when the London Missionary Society of England was celebrating the centenary of its existence and work, I was laboring as pastor of one of the churches formed by missionaries of that society in the island of Jamaica, West ln dies. In connection with our local celebration of the event, it fell to my lot to be appointed a deputa tion to visit all the Congregational churches in the island, and lecture on the hundred years' work. To me, personally, the task was a most pleasant one, since, through my father and a great many personal friends, I was related to the mis sion field; and had for many years tried to keep myself in touch with the progress of the Kingdom of Christ in the world. There is no footnote, no word in the Preface, to explain the uh pardonable liberty of the translator. A comma is put after the words loosed in heaven, and the translator continues, - as though this were the author's continua tion, -from which we may see that Jesus Christ, down to the words He shall sit and rule upon the throne of David, etc The entire passage about the successor of St. Peter, Hence it follows, is summarily omitted from what purports to be a translation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church A delineation, briefly presenting in its leading features the historic course of development which gave rise successively to these main forms and phases of the religion of the Cross, may, on account of the beauty and grandeur of its object, be regarded as secured against the suspicion of micrologic dul ness. The history of the Cross necessarily presents a reflected image of the history of Christianity itself, and indeed a more instructive and important one than any other similar contem plation, under the veil of an emblem, of the rise and growth of our religion hitherto, which might in any way be attempted. Specially upon a closer examination of its preparatory history - in the remarkable and partly enigmatical airy reflections which, in the form of so many a cruciform symbol upon the art monuments of the pre-christian as of modern Heathen dom, serve as heralds and precursors of the cultus of the Cross in the Christian Church - does our subject awaken interest in every one at all endowed with historic culture, and a sense for the appreciation of higher ethical endeavours and problems. The title Contribution to the Philosophy of History, pertains with unquestionable right to a treatment of the subject designed and executed from such standpoint; even though from time to time an indispensable entering into the details of the controversies with regard to the archeology of worship or of art, as also an examination of the more important phenomena of the dogmatic or mystic-ascetic literature bearing upon our subject, should occasion many deviations from the mode of treatment ordinarily prevailing in works on the philosophy of history. Book The Non Christian Cross

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Non-Christian Cross: An Enquiry Into the Origin and History of the Symbol Eventually Adopted as That of Our Religion The history of the symbol of the cross has had an attraction for the author ever since, as an enquiring youth, he found himself unable to obtain satisfactory answers to four questions concerning the same which presented themselves to his mind. The first of those questions was why John the Baptist, who was beheaded before Jesus was executed, and so far as we are told never had anything to do with a cross, is represented in our religious pictures as holding a cross. The second question was whether this curious but perhaps in itself easily explained practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book is a little masterpiece: it informs and it explores, it recounts history and it provokes a religious quest. It is a personal book, yet it explores the great questions of theology; it is full of learning, but not ponderous; it is written from the perspective of faith, but is not off-putting to the inquirer.” -Thomas O’Loughlin, Professor of Historical Theology University of Wales Lampeter “Andreopoulos explains the gesture and meaning and history of why Christianity has needed symbols and signs through the ages. Throughout, his writing is as inspiriting as a restorative benediction.” -ALA Booklist “The book succeeds at translating the significance of the sign of the Cross into something personal and immediate.” -Publishers Weekly “The Christian of today grows quickly from the innocent child into adulthood and demands understanding of any simple behavior. ‘Why to sign with the crossing? Where did this practice begin? When and how?’ Andreas Andreopoulos, with his book, helps to answer these questions.... [H]e immerses us into the illuminating obscurity of the Holy Tradition.” -Protopresbyter Kyrillos Leret-Aldir, Orthodox Christian Comment
