Excerpt: We Con the World is an 2010 video clip that satirizes the purportedly peaceful intentions of the political activists aboard the Turkish-owned flagship, MV Mavi Marmara, which led the Free Gaza flotilla. The video uses the tune and style of the 1985 video "We Are the World," with actors portraying the ship's captain and passengers while waving fake weapons as they sing in criticism of the activists' attempts to "make the world abandon reason" and ignore facts about Hamas as they try to breach the Gaza blockade. The video was produced in 2010 by American-Israeli Caroline Glick, a columnist for the Jerusalem Post, and Latma TV, an Israeli media satire website she edits. The website is an initiative...

Book A Performance Edition of the Well Tempered Clavier for Piano

Download or read book A Performance Edition of the Well Tempered Clavier for Piano written by E. J. Leiter and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume critical edition of Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier presents Bach¿s Autograph on left-hand pages in an unedited, true printed-form equivalent, and on facing pages contains a copiously annotated parallel redaction for piano following modern notational convention, thus practicably arranging the score for performance. With extensive fingering annotations, the piano-performance counterpart nonetheless faithfully reproduces Bach¿s orthographic nuances. These nuances are largely overlooked in most Urtext renderings, which focus more upon authenticity of the notes than upon their orthographic dimension and its interpretive weight. Bach¿s orthography is neither casual nor arbitrary; how he depicted the notes is a heuristic factor of the notes themselves. While not intended as a variorum text, the volumes discuss significant manuscript-copy variants and their relation to the Autograph. The piano score, with its very select interpretive expansions (a note into an octave, a change in registration ¿both beyond the range of Bach¿s instruments) allows facile comparison with the corresponding section of the Autograph. This critical work proposes that Bach wrote in transcendent musical reach unsupportable by his own instruments, and but proximately approachable even by the modern piano. Current performance practice embraces the innate fallacy of merely transferring notes verbatim from the indeterminate keyboard of Bach¿s writing to the keys of the piano, which is an entirely different instrument requiring an entirely different technique and interpretive approach. The now prevalent ¿Neue Sachlichkeit¿ predilection for literal performance abjures use of piano pedals, citing their absence in Bach¿s stringed ¿clavier¿; however, pedals are a prognosticative facet and organic agency of Bach¿s vision, unavoidable in contextual, literal faithfulness to his metempirical score. Furthermore, the study examines the meaning and interpretation of ornaments, and questions textually and philosophically the concept of largely theorized ¿historical¿ performance at the evidence of Bach¿s Autograph in its broader musical import. A practicable and extensive accounting of developmental stages and derivative manuscript copies is provided, with an extensive bibliography of critical works and an evaluation of early and modern printed and critical editions. Two illustrative CD recordings of the complete Book I accompany.

  • Author : David Ledbetter
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2002-01-01
  • ISBN : 0300128983

Download or read book Bach s Well tempered Clavier written by David Ledbetter and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bach's Well-tempered Clavier (or the 48 Preludes and Fugues) stands at the core of baroque keyboard music and has been a model and inspiration for performers and composers ever since it was written. This invaluable guide to the 96 pieces explains Bach's various purposes in compiling the music, describes the rich traditions on which he drew, and provides commentaries for each prelude and fugue. In his text, David Ledbetter addresses the main focal points mentioned by Bach in his original 1722 title page. Drawing on Bach literature over the past three hundred years, he explores German traditions of composition types and Bach's novel expansion of them; explains Bach's instruments and innovations in keyboard technique in the general context of early eighteenth-century developments; reviews instructive and theoretical literature relating to keyboard temperaments from 1680 to 1750; and discusses Bach's pedagogical intent when composing the Well-tempered Clavier. Ledbetter's commentaries on individual preludes and fugues equip readers with the concepts necessary to make their own assessment and include information about the sources when details of notation, ornaments, and fingerings have a bearing on performance.
