Book The Oxford Illustrated History of Science

Download or read book The Oxford Illustrated History of Science written by Iwan Rhys Morus and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Illustrated History of Science is the first ever fully illustrated global history of science, from Aristotle to the atom bomb - and beyond. The first part of the book tells the story of science in both East and West from antiquity to the Enlightenment: from the ancient Mediterranean world to ancient China; from the exchanges between Islamic and Christian scholars in the Middle Ages to the Chinese invention of gunpowder, paper, and the printing press; from the Scientific Revolution of sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe to the intellectual ferment of the eighteenth century. The chapters that follow focus on the increasingly specialized story of science since end of the eighteenth century, covering experimental science in the laboratory from Michael Faraday to CERN; the exploration of nature, from intrepid Victorian explorers to twentieth century primatologists; the mapping of the universe, from the discovery of Uranus to Big Bang theory; the impact of evolutionary ideas, from Lamarck, Darwin, and Wallace to DNA; and the story of theoretical physics, from James Clark Maxwell to Quantum Theory and beyond. A concluding chapter reflects on how scientists have communicated their work to a wider public, from the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the internet in the early twenty-first century.

This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Record of Science and Industry for 1876 Its distinguishing features, as compared with other works intended to answer the same general purpose, are as follows: First, a series of summaries of progress in the different branches of physical, natural, and industrial science, pre pared by a number of the most eminent specialists in the United States, whose collaboration the editor has been so fortunate as to secure. Second, a series of abstracts, more or less systematically arranged, Of special papers, memoirs, or other publications, by various writers, and with references to the title, volume, and page of the source of information; these abstracts very rarely being transcripts from the original, but digests in which only the points of special' novelty and interest are presented, with omission of irrelevant matter, and not unfrequently with critical remarks and elucidations. These have been for the most part edited and prepared by the Specialists referred to. Third, a list of the losses in scientific circles by death during the year. Book The Science of Energy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Crosbie Smith
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780226764207
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book The Science of Energy written by Crosbie Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we take it for granted today, the concept of "energy" transformed nineteenth-century physics. In The Science of Energy, Crosbie Smith shows how a North British group of scientists and engineers, including James Joule, James Clerk Maxwell, William and James Thomson, Fleeming Jenkin, and P. G. Tait, developed energy physics to solve practical problems encountered by Scottish shipbuilders and marine engineers; to counter biblical revivalism and evolutionary materialism; and to rapidly enhance their own scientific credibility. Replacing the language and concepts of classical mechanics with terms such as "actual" and "potential" energy, the North British group conducted their revolution in physics so astutely and vigorously that the concept of "energy"—a valuable commodity in the early days of industrialization—became their intellectual property. Smith skillfully places this revolution in its scientific and cultural context, exploring the actual creation of scientific knowledge during one of the most significant episodes in the history of physics.

Book Scientists and the Sea 1650 1900

Download or read book Scientists and the Sea 1650 1900 written by Margaret Deacon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists and the Sea is a history of how the scientific study of the sea has developed over a period of nearly 2500 years. Beginning with the speculations of Greek philosophers it carries the story forward, showing how curiosity about the ocean appeared in many different forms and locations before, in the late 19th century, the first deep-sea researches heralded the foundation of the science known today as oceanography. Originally published in 1971, this book has never been superseded as the most comprehensive and wide-ranging treatment of the emergence of marine science within the western scientific tradition. After three introductory chapters dealing with knowledge up to the Renaissance, the main part of the work shows how pioneers of scientific observation at sea during the 17th and 18th centuries made notable discoveries, but that it was not until the middle of the 19th century when, aided by the advance of technology, scientists were able to undertake the first explorations of the ocean depths. This second edition contains a new introduction and bibliography.
