Book excerpt: Bikers are spiritual people. They may or may not go to church and few will align themselves with any particular religion or denomination. They are nonetheless, deeply spiritual. It comes naturally after riding through some of the most beautiful countryside in the world! Creation cries out to our five senses, daring us to deny the existence of a higher power. Many still do not recognize that there is a personable God who wants to know us intimately. Jesus Christ spoke to the common man and is relevant to the road warriors of today. In the New Testament, Jesus uses simple stories and parables to communicate His message. The Saddlebag Gospels capture these stories, partnering them with tales from the highway, to illustrate the Gospel or Good News. So, tuck this book into your saddlebags and enjoy a story or two as you have a cup of coffee. Gain a clearer understanding of a God who truly loves you and then ponder the truth of the words you have read as you head out onto the highway.

Book Four Other Gospels

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Dominic Crossan
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2008-03-01
  • ISBN : 1556358202
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Four Other Gospels written by John Dominic Crossan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four canonical gospels are long set in established sequence as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This book is about four other gospels, the Gospel of Thomas, the Secret Gospel of Mark; the Gospel of Peter, and Egerton Papyrus 2. These four other gospels have generally been regarded as mere digests or collages of the canonical gospels, whereas in fact, as Professor Crossan persuasively shows, the four others hold within their mutilated fragments independent or earlier traditions than those tradition has canonized. Four Other Gospels proposes a spectrum of relations between the canonical gospels and these others. This spectrum ranges from the Gospel of Thomas, which is a parallel and independent tradition, to Egerton Papyrus 2, on which both John and Mark are dependent, to the Secret Gospel of Mark, on which Mark directly and John indirectly are dependent, and on to the Gospel of Peter, which contains an original Passion-Resurrection source used by all four of the canonical gospels, but which submitted to their eventual ascendancy by attempting a harmonization between it and them, and placed the new complex under the authority and authorship of Simon Peter. Four Other Gospels does not propose a new or alternative canon. The canon is a fact both of history and of theology. But the thesis of this book is that anyone who takes the four other gospels seriously and thoughtfully will never again be able to read the four canonical gospels in quite the same way. A new light has been shed.

Book The Long Road Home and Other Short Stories from the Silences in the Gospel of Mark

Download or read book The Long Road Home and Other Short Stories from the Silences in the Gospel of Mark written by James S. Lowry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-17 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borrowing from the ancient rabbinic use of midrash as a means of opening Scripture to students, James Lowry has chosen six texts from among those in which he believes Mark deliberately left silences. The author is convinced Mark hoped his readers would be encouraged to raise a variety of possibilities as to what the evangelist left unsaid. Beginning with Mark choosing not to name the temptations of Jesus (Mark 1:12-13) and concluding with Mark choosing to conclude his narrative with the women leaving the tomb of Jesus in stunned silence (Mark 16:8), Lowry spins short stories that suggest several alternative ideas as to how the biblical narrative might have played. In half of the tales, Lowry enters the text and adds fictitious material to Mark's narrative. In the other half, his stories are set in the small textile town of Great Falls, South Carolina, where the author grew up in the 1950s. The hope is these stories will encourage readers of Mark and groups of his readers to raise other possibilities.
