Agriculture and rural development are central to the rate of rural out-migration to urban areas. The agricultural sector needs to engage youth in order to increase global food production. In doing so, agricultural transformation can balance out-migration from rural areas and thus contribute to stable growth. This document presents the conceptual framework for distress migration of rural youth. The framework focuses on the migration of rural youth (aged 15–24), who account for a large proportion of migrants and are a particularly vulnerable group. The framework comprises three sections: 1. Analysis of the main factors determining the propensity of rural youth to migrate; 2. Assessment of the likely impacts of distress migration of rural youth in terms of rural development for local areas of origin; 3. Illustration of the most promising policies and programmes to reduce distress migration of rural youth and maximize its dev elopmental benefits for the communities of origin.

Despite large scale housing programmes from the side of the government, construction and settling processes have largely remained incremental. Nadine Appelhans focuses on the relation between statutory planning and practices of everyday urbanisation. The findings from Bahir Dar suggest that some mundane regimes of building the city are patronised, while others are considered undesired by policy makers. Based on this insight, the author argues that urban development in Bahir Dar needs to be locally grounded, differentiated and inclusive to avoid further tendencies of segregation.

Sources of livelihoods and earnings in rural households are no longer confined to agriculture and are increasingly being diversified through migration of family one or more member within and beyond national boundaries. Migration is not a new phenomenon in India rather country has a long history of migration, which has played an important role in its social history, development and growth and culture. This study of the nature and determinants of male out-migration from rural UP focusing on six villages in Jaunpur District started with an observation that despite high male out-migration from rural UP, little attention has been given to understand the dynamics and process of migration in rural UP. Although migration has become the most opted strategy of diversification of livelihoods for rural households in UP, literature on it remains scarce. Literature on migration and its link with social groups are also scarce for UP. The work started with the proposition that migration is a risk and income diversification strategy (NELM approach) by rural households in UP. Along with linkages between migration and social group there is also a dearth of literature on migration as a risk diversification strategy in UP. Using primary data from the case study district of Jaunpur in eastern UP, India, firstly, a survey in the origin was carried out, and then migrants from the same households were tracked and interviewed at their respective destinations. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the literature on migration within and from rural areas of Southeast Asia to examine the effects of redistribution of labor and remittances on livelihoods and land-use practices, as well as contexts in which migration drives, yet is also driven by, social and environmental change. Gaps in the literature and areas of contention and debate are highlighted, informing an agenda for further research. Many studies approach ways in which labor dynamics and remittances to rural villages affect agricultural productivity among migrant-sending households, or compensate for lost labor by supporting household consumption, but the reality is often found to be a combination of both on the basis of immediate priorities. Perceived returns to investments in both monetary and labor terms are critical to how migration influences household land-use decisions, while initially profitable investments and conducive local conditions are seen to enable successive enhancement and diversification of livelihoods. Overall, the expansive literature relating to migration and development often alludes to, yet stops short of, directly examining migration and remittance effects on land and forest cover change. The literature on land-use change often overlooks or briefly references migration, but migration rarely forms the central point of enquiry. Understanding of the linkages between migration and land-use can be strengthened through spatially situated studies in different geographical settings. Such studies would be better positioned to inform policies relating to land-use, agriculture and forestry in rural regions of Southeast Asia, where multi-local livelihoods are increasingly entwined with globalized processes, including those driving environmental changes that such policies seek to govern.

Simultaneously, the city’s contribution to the national economy almost trebled. On the other hand, Dhaka’s high population density exacerbated serious environmental challenges, and it was soon ranked as one of the world’s least livable cities. The disparities can be seen in all spheres of human life -- economic and social. The income inequalities, lack of employment opportunities, lack of infrastructure and civic amenities, inadequate access to education, healthcare and other basic services are some of the major areas, where rural areas lag behind urban. Globalisation and the spread of the consumerism culture has further deepened these disparities, visible in the affluence and glitz of urban areas, which stand in stark contrast to the poverty, deprivation and squalor that characterises the rural landscape in developing countries. The burgeoning slums in urban areas populated largely by migrants from rural areas are an outcome of these disparities. Seen in the context of countries like china and India, which together account for close to two fifths of the world's populations, and where 70% of the people still live in rural areas, the rural-urban divide assumes great significance. The rural-urban 'divides' is however, not the only perspective on the rural-urban equation; increasingly, experts and analysts point to the linkage that exists between rural and urban areas that mutually strengthens the rural and urban sectors.
